Jeongdongjin Marine Terrace Trail with mesmerizing scenery "Jeongdong" in the name, Jeongdongsimgok Badabuchae Trail, originated from how this area is located to the direct east of Hanyang where the king lived, and "Simgok" refers to a village located deep in a valley. Jeongdongjin's topography which resembles the "tip of a fan" and where the trail is located bearing resemblance to a fan spread out towards the sea are the reasons why the area was aptly named the "Jeongdongsimgok Badabuchae Trail." It is designated as a Natural Monument and the country's one and only marine terrace where visitors can observe the traces of crustal movements dating back some 23 million years that keep the secret of how the East Sea was created. As you walk along the 2.86-kilometer-long trail from the Jeongdongjin Sun Cruise parking lot to Simgok Port, you will be able to enjoy the beauty of the blue waves of the East Sea and the grand appearance of uniquely-shaped rocks and cliffs. The trail presents mesmerizing scenery that not many people know about since the area had been solely used for coastal patrols and military guard outposts.
'정동심곡바다부채길'의 '정동'은 임금이 거처하는 한양(경복궁)에서 정방향으로 동쪽에 있다는 뜻에서 유래했으며, '심곡'은 깊은 골짜기 안에 있는 마을이란 뜻에서 유래되었습니다. 정동진의 ‘부채끝’ 지형과 탐방로가 위치한 지형의 모양이 바다를 향해 부채를 펼쳐 놓은 모양과 같아서 “정동심곡바다부채길”로 지명이 선정되었습니다.
천연기념물 제437호로 지정된 곳이며, 동해 탄생의 비밀을 간직한 200~250만년 전 지각변동을 관찰할 수 있는 국내 유일의 해안단구입니다.
정동항(정동매표소) ~ 심곡항(심곡매표소), 약 3.01㎞ 탐방로가 조성되어 동해바다의 푸른 물결과 웅장한 기암괴석에서 오는 비경의 아름다움을 감상할 수 있으며 그 동안 해안경비를 위해 군 경계근무 정찰로로만 이용되어 온 곳으로 천혜의 비경을 선사합니다.

부채길 완주하고 나니까 땀이 많이 났었는데
마침 정동진해변 에서 모터보트를 타고 바다위를 시원하게 달리면서 걸어왔던 부채길을 다시되 돌아보니 경관이 너무도 멋지더라구요.

몇년전에 갔을땐 태풍으로 중간이 끊겨있었지만 지금은 복구되어, 심곡항에서 정동진까지 왔다갔다 할수있답니다.
