I knew the name Nuance sounded familiar, but realised why only later in the video. As a school student, I interned with an ERP dev company that used Dragon Naturally Speaking back in 2000, the tech was way ahead of its time!
The speech recognition tech must have been at least a nice bonus for MS if not a direct consideration in the purchase - their speech recognition used to be so far behind the leading 3rd party applications. This explains why it actually works now.
Bro you're mistaken, Nuance is actually sitting on a treasure trove of IP, their underlying IP will be the key to "Frontend if AGI", or you can say it like this "They are the owner of IP which has the potential to facilitate multimodal Human AGI interface".
It's hard not to appreciate the new Nadella's Microsoft after watching your videos. After losing the battle in the smartphone world, he didn't give up but took up to rebuild Microsoft by focusing on various different sectors instead of narrowing pursuing their hero products. While its competitors were busy planning on how to lock in customers (Apple or Google), Microsoft became more and more open while becoming a background behemoth out of spotlight. Hope they again become successful in consumer space with Windows 12

Wasn't Nuance the leader in Automatic Speech Recognition a long time ago? I remember they had a text to speech software called dragon back in mid 2000's.
Interesting story, even though the acquisition was already two years ago. This story is a little bit incomplete. In 1997 Microsoft acquired a minority stake in Belgium-based company Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products, and used their speech recognition and text-to-speech software in Windows, as well as certain elements of a grammar checker for Microsoft Office. In 2000 L&H acquired Dragon and then went bankrupt in 2001. This is when Nuance (known then as ScanSoft) acquired all of the L&H's speech technologies, including those from Dragon. Microsoft has since developed its own text to speech software, which is part of its Azure AI Services. In fact, this powers the text to speech in Office, Edge and Clipchamps. I knew Dragon from its NaturallySpeaking software and also knew Kurzweil music instruments, from the company that was founded by Ray Kurzweil and Stevie Wonder, who was the first person to buy Ray Kurzweil's reading machine for the blind.
I worked at a law firm that used dragon naturally speak and also worked with boomers who has arthritis that needed a speech software to make computing easier. I didn't know this brand was "obscure", probably normies didn't know about it since its not as popular as the mainstream tech products.
Dragon Naturally Speaking isn't a noname product. It was an incredible product before the deep learning revolution. Also, didn't Nuance create a large part of Siri? I thought it got bought by Apple during the Siri development. Also, you've never heard of Kurzweil? He's the most famous transhumanist propagandist ...
Bought my mom Dragon NaturallySpeaking a decade ago so she could transcribe a book she was writing. Stapes had a sale when you bundled with Microsoft Office and now interesting Microsoft is now bundling the software themselves.

Great video. I watched at start because i was intrigued by the reference to Nuance as a no name. At microsoft we shipped dragon nuance speech in automotive products across clarion autopc, ford sync, etc. dozens of car makers.
