Good video, Ive been sour that "asmrtists" universally have terrible audio engineering. They just get the 2 mics and thats that. Im surprised theres no real professional teams making production quality asmt at this point.

I mean, I kinda get it. Like you sacrifice the quality of the spatialization for audio quality, and traditional audio mixing would emphasize improving audio quality, so most ASMRtists do that. Using HRTFs and programmatically moving audio in theory generates higher quality sound, but only for individual sources, it also adds an extra step of spatializing in post which can be more cumbersome to some people's workflows. Plus, any binaural vst will require ASMRtists to learn how to use a DAW, which I'm guessing is generally unfamiliar to most of them. Hell, I'm pretty sure the majority of ASMR audiences don't actually get ASMR and are there purely for relaxation, in which case the binaural effect serves even less of a purpose, haha

This is genius. I think you should create a full binaural ASMR video as you are already good at it.
I have been looking for an ASMR with realistic binaural sounds but it is not easy to find one.

I've always had an odd relation with videos that claim to have 3d sound. Even in this video, it sounds like everything is behind me. The only video I've ever heard that actually had that effect was the ancient 2007 video about the virtual haircut.
It's been like this with almost every pair of headphones I've used, and I can't discern why it's like that.

    • @EqualASMR

I get that, if there's one thing that developing the binaural software has taught me it's that head geometry is waaayyyy more important than I originally thought. This is the closest HRTF to my head that I've found so far, so I experience some really nice top of the head feelings, but still very weak front of head cues.
I'd recommend trying to use earbuds instead of headphones. They'll generally always be more convincing because all binaural recordings are generally done with tiny in ear microphones instead of over ear ones. So the most accurate recreation is with earbuds. Other than that, it's a matter of finding a dummy head recording that matches up with what your head is shaped like. I've got an idea for a video that might help people find the particular head recording that matches there own, but that's a ways away.

I started watching that video a lot in 2008, before asmr was a thing. There was also a handful of other videos with close-ish quality that were just simple noises like bubbles or scissors. Its a shame that no asmr producer has come close to that quality in all these years

I think it depends on the headphones. You need a good quality DAC with high stereo separation as well.

      Hi Ristar 2
It was that video that made me pop the question to myself, how did they do that? after many months of brain storming I suddenley realised how to capture audio that way, so I made some casts of my ears to prove it to myself to see if I had cracked it.
I did! But, they are my ears with my recordings, and unless your ears are a very similar shape then HRTF confusion sets in and you percive the sound from behind you, or whereever.
Do you have misformed ears? or ears with a strange shape compared to most people?
I see that some people have cauliflower ears which distroys what I call ERTF (ear related transfer function). Or some people have distorted ears where the pinna does not have folds where they shoud be.
My understanding of this suggests that those people have a 'blurred' vison of a binaural world.
I believe ear pericings and things like that can effect your perception of where a sound is coming from due to un-natural sound reflections caused by them that normally wouldnt be there, pin pointing where the phone is ringing in another room for example.
As I get older I find locating a sound source harder than when I was younger, like pinpointing where a phone is when it ringing, in the room, or in another room. Probably due to the higher frequencies that I would have normally have heard (due to in-ear reflections) are no longer there.

the most classic example of true binaural audio is the virtual barber shop. it's what got me into binaural asmr. It truly has unmatched sound localization. The thing is: The localization is based on the "average" human ear. Because all our ear auricles are different, the effect might not be as good with one person as the other.
I have yet to see 3D audio recorders that can "train" itself on different auricles, making the effect more accurate. I think 360 Audio gets pretty close, but so far I've had mediocre results with it.

Yes! @ Quantum ASMR and Heather Feather would get this and probably Gibis editor too who make her sound the way she likes it which is awesome with the AKG or just the Yeti without being too much sound, like it’s good for her and what she does :) It’s a lot of pretty complicated "math" /science for most though but not rocket science, but this is really good for soundscapes

How can the microphone really hear anything coming from above or below? The microphone isn't an ear, its a recorder. It would be like saying a camera is the same as our eyes.
If the microphone could really record above or below you could place a microphone upside down at the top of a tree, and everything should sound as if its coming from above the tree. Or place the microphone at the bottom of the tree upside down, and everything should sound as if its coming from below it.
Or, if you imagine a room with a hole in the ceiling connected to another room that you could stick your head through. If go to the above room and stick your head through the hole, so that the top of your head is at the top of the ceiling - you won't hear things as if everything is happening ABOVE you. It will still sound as if something is happening BELOW you.
Or consider laying down. If I'm lying down and listening to a recording of ASMR where someone says that are above me, where should I technically be hearing the sound. Above me, as in above my body, or above me as if above the top of my head.
If I'm now lying down on my left side, my right side is now technically from my point of view above me, and my left side is facing down towards the floor and is below me. But judging from a person sitting or standing up, this isn't the same.
Our hearing is the effort of the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. When Vincent Van Gogh cut of his ear, he didn't stop hearing - as would be a very cartoon styled logic. Placing an outer ear on a microphone will increase the way the microphone works absolutely, but so will placing a parabolic dish around a microphone. It won't gain the ability to process audio and somehow understand up, down, in front and behind.

The relatively new UDO Super 6 and Super Gemini synthesizers claim to be “binaural”, but I suspect this is just a marketing label for what is really just stereo output … but I don’t understand how they work well enough (or what, if anything, makes them different from other synths etc with stereo output) to know/be able to say … ? Is anyone familiar with these, at all?

Binaural cues don't alone help differentiating front & back or elevation. HRTF is the best solution.

    • @EqualASMR
      @EqualASMR  3 роки тому +1

I mean, HRTFs are derived from binaural microphones. It's not the binaural cues of the mic that make it differentiate front/back or elevation, it's the monaural cues. I think there are a lot of convenience reasons that make HRTFs more flexible though
