- Returning for another year, the Bluebell Railway's annual 'Giants of Steam' Gala was held over the weekend of October 14th - 16th, with the theme of "Raising the Standards"; celebrating the work of Robert Riddles under British Railways. A total of 6 locomotives would be in steam for the event, with four of them being BR Standard Class locomotives.
The event featured three visiting locomotives, joining members of the home-fleet providing traction through the gala. The first of the visiting locomotives would come in the shape of 'Modified Hall' Class - 6989 "Wightwick Hall", courtesy of the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre. 6989 has been on an extended loan to the Bluebell Railway through the 2022 operating season. Shouldering the Swindon machine would be 4MT - 76017, visiting from the Mid-Hants Railway, and 5MT - 73156 from the Great Central Railway. The presence of 73156, with the Bluebell's own 5MT - 73082 "Camelot", marked the first time in preservation that two Standard 5MT's have operated together since the days of steam on BR. While the visit of 76017 provided a double up of 4MT power, with resident 4MT Tank - 80151.
An intensive timetable was in use over all three operating days with frequent passenger services, including the ocassional double-headed service; a highlight of which came in the form of 73082 & 73156 working line-astern through the Sussex countryside.
Locomotives:
BR(W) 6959 'Modified Hall' Class - 6989 "Wightwick Hall"
BR Standard Class 4MT Tank - 80151
BR Standard Class 4MT - 76017
Ex-SR Q Class - 30541
BR Standard Class 5MT - 73156
BR Standard Class 5MT - 73082 "Camelot"
All footage filmed on Sunday the 16th of October 2022.
I do hope all the lineside photographers either buy a ticket for the event or send in a donation to the Bluebell Railway, because these galas are expensive to stage and the cost of tickets is rising at an alarming rate. If revenue drops any further, railways will be forced to cut costs and that will result in less gala events and less visiting locomotives.
Yes Tim your right , photography like this is priceless so they should donate a bit especially as some railways charge for a lines identification pass
Sorry !!! Typo . Line side pass .
@@matthew0605 Some line side photographers do it because the cost of the events is more than they can afford or are prepared to pay, others do it because they can great shots as shown in this video, either way I would hope people donate what they can afford, because it will be too late when Gala events are no longer economically viable.
I don't know if you are aware of the three dots to the right of comments, if you click on them you will see "Edit", this allows you to edit posts you have written. I have to use them quite often, I'm glad they are there.
Excellent video thoroughly enjoyed watching it, with impeccable engines and rolling stock gleaming in the sunlight 👌
Look at this two standard 5 locos one with a chime whistle behind the funnel and with a name on the side and the other which has a normal standard 5 locos whistle and carrying no name all on one train
Great coverage as usual. Nice to see the autumn colours appearing, however, although the Ash is usually one of the first to shed it’s leaves it does illustrate just how bad Ash die back is decimating the population. All the best. Mick
long life for the Q. Its my favorite locomotive on the Bluebell right now
Brilliant to see Standards working like this -was that green loco a clockwork one? [how to start GWR versus the rest -again!]
Really was a pleasure to see
I daren't comment
Standard heaven, beautiful in black, made that other one turn green with envy (ducking down below the parapets now!!) Cracking to see that double header. That was a classy ending shot Matthew!👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it, Bob! It was a great selection in the line-up. Just a shame some of the Bluebell's own Standards are currently unserviceable.
Got soaked for that ending shot - worth the result.
Horses
Great footage !
Cheers
The bluebell railway is a loving quite to go see some of the most powerful and the most beautiful steam locomotives and sightseeing the views of the green valley’s I just wish they the LNER Y6 tram engine then that way it could bring more eye catching from visitors for generations to see what was like in the old 19th century.
Excellent photography - beautifully lingering establishing shots. Thank you for sharing the quintessential ambiance of autumn days in the South.
Great video. Loved the Standards especially the double headed 5s.
Looks like the Bluebell have been investing heavily in upgrading their track to Mainline standards.
The hall makes me think the bluebell should buy the hall from the Epping Ongar Railway Would make a nice addiction
Nice coverage Matthew 👏.
Thanks, Jamie!
