The "booze bus" or roadside breath testing stations are not an unpleasant experience at all here in Australia. Seriously, if you're doing the right thing you have nothing to fear and it takes probably 1-2 minutes of your time. They wave down a group of cars, an officer comes up and asks if you've had anything to drink (to which the correct answer is no), you count to 10 while he holds the machine in front of your mouth, takes the reading, and "thank you, have a nice night!" and waves you on. When it was brought in 40 years ago it slashed the drunk-driving death and injury stats.

not entirely obviously, but the shit they do helps a lot.. my grandma passed away late last year at 103!.
My Auntie's family lived only 2 streets so she had family close by.
But she had someone that came once a week to drive her to the supermarket and help her do the shopping and that could drive her to the doctors etc when it wasnt an emergency/ambulance needed and when the family was working or just not available, and would also help her with general things like calling repairmen etc(which was especially helpful to her as english was not her native language).
The help they provided enabled her to live in her own home (as she had wanted- my auntie's family were more than willing for her to move in there, but she wanted to be in her home) until a couple of days before she passed away in her sleep at the hospital.

Great review as always....by the way it's Macca's plus as far as the booze bus goes, police in Australia randomly pull drivers over for a breath test and sometimes a drug test too. There is no probable cause here, and every driver must submit to a test with no BS like " I'll sue you " to the cops. If that driver does not submit to a test, he or she can be charged with the highest level of drunkenness and lose their license for 2 years plus a big fine.

Several years ago, there was a park near my place that I wouldn't take my kids to simply because of the all the drug crap laying around, mostly used Syringes. The Council changed one thing and it all stopped. They replace the lights in the public toilet with Blue lights. This prevented the junkies from being able to see properly when using Syringes. Within 6 to 8 months we had new swings and climbing equipment for kids, people were walking their dogs and the best part was that it became a great place to take my kids after school.

    • @allisalie101
      @allisalie101 4 місяці тому +6

@@RUHappyATM Not really similar at all. Super here is a mandatory requirement and has to be paid by the employer to every single employee, whether full time, part time, casual, etc. They are even legally obliged to pay into their own super fund if they draw a salary, and is, at a minimum, an additional 10% + on top of your income, whereas your 401K is a voluntary scheme and is deducted from your income, and certainly isn't provided to every single working person. You can also add extra, from your wage if you want, and you can also self manage etc. Big difference.

@@RUHappyATM Not exactly the same. There is no compulsory Employee component to Superannuation Funds in Australia. However, ALL Employers are legally required to contribute a portion of ALL their individual employees' wages to a retirement investment fund. (The Employer contribution is currently at 11% but with increase in 2025 to 12%) Employees can also contribute a portion of their salary (called "salary sacrificing") The concessional income tax rate to a Super Fund is 15%, which is lower than the tax rate of most employees. This is to encourage Employees to make contributions to their super funds. I salary sacrificed for years (on a nurse's wage) and was able to retire 8 years early as a Self-Funded Retiree, with a few hundred thousand $$$ for my retirement. As a self-funded retiree, I do not need to rely on any pension scheme for my retirement.
A few years ago, the government were offering a 1:1.5 incentive for employees to make extra contributions. For every $100 an employee would deposit the government added $150. (From memory the amount had to be over $500+). When our daughter turned 21, we gave her $1,000 to deposit into her super fund and the government gave her an EXTRA $1,500! Not a bad Happy 21st birthday present.

As the second driest continent, after Antarctica, we are very big on saving water. Dual flush toilet cisterns have been compulsory for a few decades. Rainwater tanks are common for catching water for use on gardens and lawns.
I can do all my car registration, insurances etc. online. I have a five year drivers license so I only go to the equivalent of your DMV once every five years to update the photo on my new license.
We have all sorts of facilities in the various parks near me, skateboard parks, exercise equipment, children’s playgrounds, free electric barbecues, free restrooms, picnic tables (some undercover), walking trails and fenced off dog areas. On support for parents. When my son was born our public hospital (free) had two maternity nurses allocated to us for the whole pregnancy. So one of those was on call 24/7 for the whole pregnancy if we had any concerns. When we'd go for scheduled check ups ultrasounds etc. it was one of these women that saw us so we got to know each other really well. It meant you didn't have to go through all the answering the same questions 10x with different people so was more efficient. These ladies ran the prenatal classes too.
Because they worked essentially spit shift one was always on call so when my wife had my son she was there. They got us home very quick instead of being in hospital for a week my wife was home next day even though she ended up needing a C section. Then when at home they were on 24/7 call (and we did call several times) in addition they'd visit regularly to see how we were going helps with hints for breast feeding etc. We had this care available for like a year after they explained all the vaccines and when to get them etc. At the end of their time we got them both a really nice gift and they said "Look if you still need us just call". Fantastic care and cost $0.
Same logic. Better to pay a bit more up front than deal with bigger problems latter on. Now I'm sure this care is not everywhere in Australia but it was available to us in our inland city.

I had to register my ute in January and after getting the pink slip then paying CTP online I stuffed around for the rest of the day trying to pay the rego. Kept sending it back saying nothing to pay. I started thinking I'd been done for someone using my details and having a suspension and wouldn't let me register in my name. By the way, I'm an old school welder and the latest technology to me is a new TV. All this online stuff unless it's fully straight forward with only a couple of whatever's to do then forget it. Too bloody complicated to me, I never even saw a computer when I went to school and when my younger brother was in year 12 it was the very first year computers had been introduced. Some massive great big box white thing that looked like the old style portable TV that was as wide as it was deep. The screen was green and everything on it kept flashing then was printed on newspaper sized paper with holes down each side. I was a fourth year apprentice and knew everything about nothing when it came to everything so I told my brother he's an idiot if he thinks those computer things named after the best Aussie made car at the time the mighty VC Commodore (1982) are going to take off and start being used by sensible people like myself. Only took me a few dozen and more decades to realise maybe he was right. (last year)
I got onto the service NSW phone line and asked why I couldn't re register my ute, gave him the rego# and my details and he replied "yep, all good. Registered to 18.2.2024. Anything else?"
Me "Yeh. How? It won't let me pay??" I then found out I had automatic rego renewal and the pink and green slip go straight through as soon as they are payed. The rego is automatically deducted from my account and ute was registered a few minutes after after I payed the green slip at 10.30 that morning. Was almost 5pm by the time I gave up and made the phone call. I had completely forgotten that I registered for auto rego last time it was due.

I'm so grateful for our welfare system. I've had a rough life but there's always been services and organisations to help when things have been tough. From housing services when I was a homeless youth to mental health support when I've been unwell. I've always worked when I've been able and happy to pay taxes because those services that benefited me should be there to benefit others.

I live in Adelaide in South Australia. I grew up in America, and came to Australia in the mid 60s when I was 16. One of the first things that struck me was the Adelaide CBD was surrounded by parkland. Parks and green spaces are throughout the suburbs, by law. The free electric bbqs are everywhere in these parks. All of the parks and green spaces are well maintained and clean. Litter is rare. It is not unusual on sunny days to see families in the parks enjoying picnics and making use of the free bbc facilities. And local government keep the bbq unit scrupulously clean.

Yes in Australia we have PAID holiday leave, PAID sick leave, PAID maternity leave, PAID public holidays, if you work on public holidays you get paid double time per hour, when you have to work weekends you get paid more. Then we have super annuation, this is where as soon as you start work you pick which super annuation company you want to use then your employer has to by law put 11% on top of your wage that gets put into your super fund, this is invested until you retire.

Not that long ago for me, working in an office as a casual by-the-hour employee. Earning about $35.00 per hour as my base rate of pay. When I was working that same job (and working from home as well, so none of that commuting bullshit, or traffic and parking to mess with), I was pulling in better than $77.00 per hour for my nightshift rosters
No, I did *not* have a university degree to justify that pay packet. I'm muddling along with a TAFE Certificate IV level of education. (For those in the U.S, I dunno what that equates to, but it's probably less than a community college diploma, FWIW).
Oh yeah, I'm now a permanent full-time employee in the exact same role (without a temporary employment agency in the middle) in the same company, and I'm earning *so* much more than that now.

(I was 72) Oh, and they are free for us to use as they are paid by our tax. We also have something else that I have not heard of over in the U.S, and that is bike paths, we are a large bicycle riding population and there are many bike paths linking parks, following rivers and creeks, I keep finding new ones each time I go out. At my age I only do about 25km rides

to understand the work life balance we have a gov organisation called fairwork australia who set the rules determining anything work related. One of the laws is that a working week is capped at 38 hours, any more and you get paid overtime (unless you work two jobs) with 4 weeks annual leave and sick leave maternal and paternal leave. this came about because a really really smart judge, tasked in the 1900's did an audit of australian workplace laws and realised that giving your workers a break gave them a chance to relax, refresh and come back to work recharged thus work harder. They also worked out what a family needed to survive, so three meals, food clothing housing etc. then flipped the dialogue and how much employers could afford to pay workers so they could still make profit. From this a minimum wage was established and work life balance became enshrined in law leading to a happy workforce as they know they get weekends to spend quality time with mates and family.

Our toilets are because Australia is a very dry country. Before dual flush toilets we used to put a brick in the cistern to save water on flushing. Our parks are getting better all the time. Even small towns now have good parks, and fitness equipment is pretty common in a lot of them. Especially on beach reserves and parks. New housing estates often have an awesome park and some even have cafes. Those swimming lagoons are partly because it's not safe to swim in the northen areas of Australia. Stone fish, Box Jellyfish and sharks are common hazards in our tropical waters. Our DMV's have improved over the last 10 years and in NSW they even have someone to welcome you and direct you to the right place and forms you need. You get comfy lounge spaces to sit and are usually out very quickly. I'm in Queensland and a lot of things can be done online. I just renewed my licence online even though it was expired for 2 years. Violent crimes are extremely low you can walk almost anywhere with headphones and not much situational awareness. At a dr hospital or ambulance i swipe my veteran or medicare card and their is zero out if pocket ever. We also dont pay up front for fuel at a gas station, we pay at the end. After 10 years service you get 2 months leave and then pro rata for the following years... In my case after I retired I was still paid for a little over 10 months! Hope you find this interesting? The other thing America should have is our election system. Not necessarily the full preference voting, I think that would be unnecessary, but when we vote we are only voting on one thing. It's in and out. No voting for sheriff, AG, dog catcher and whatever House motion. Those things are decided by parliament or state governments. That's what they are paid for.
Also, given the current situation where you have a convicted rapist and fraudster running for the GOP nomination, the Australian Constitution disqualifies anyone who has been convicted of an offence which carries a penalty of more than one year in prison for running for parliament. So even if you were found guilty and only sentenced to community service but the maximum penalty available to the judge was 2 years in prison, you are ineligible.
And so many other things. Universal healthcare, compulsory superannuation, better welfare and living wages. While we are a free country with free elections, Australia is more technically a social democracy where we actually look out for each other.

There are people who use public toilets, especially in parks or beaches, to shoot up. But there are also 'fit bins' in most public toilets so that used syringes can be disposed of safely and cleanly. There are also 'fit collection ' services that will go to your house to pick up fit bins if you're an intravenous drug user. Can't remember if they give out clean syringes but there are centres were you can pick up free clean syringes and stuff to ensure you inject safely. It's part of the harm minimisation angle used in Australia to reduce the spread of disease in drug users. We do have homelessness here but not in the same numbers as America. Our welfare system does a lot to help those less fortunate. That said the rental crisis is increasing homelessness.

yeah, last time I went to the "DMV", it was in there less than 5 minutes. that includes walking in, lining up, showing my ID, filling in the paper work, paying and walking out. not only are they super quick over here, but you rarely have to go in. its only if your filing 'new' paperwork, like getting a car re-registered after it has not been on the road in a long time or getting your license for the first time. if your just buying a car that is already registered, you can transfer it over to your name online.
and the funny thing is, ours does not just handle car stuff, its sort of the one stop shop for anything 'government'. like birth certificates, gun license, fishing licenses, national park passes, the list goes on and on yet there is RARELY a line of more than a few people waiting.

The playground in parks have recycled tyres on the ground so the kids do not get hurt if they fall over. Almost every beach here has a skate park, mine does, covers tables and seating and free Barbeques, mine has this too and my beach is 20 kilometre’s long and hardly anyone uses it. It is fun to have that much beach alone. The City near us is about to triple the size of our skate park because it is from beginners to experts. Champions come and give free lessons and every kid under 18 loves it. We do not have any crime in our little Village, we keep the kids busy. They are trained to be Lifesavers on the beach from age 5, very busy and out of trouble.
We always got 6 weeks paid holiday a year and one paid Monday a month. We get 10 months paid Maternity leave and they have just added Paternity leave. My sister took 10 months on full pay to have her son, she never went back to work because he was sick. That was almost 49 years ago. Plus every 12 years we get 3 months paid Long Service leave and no employer can say when you can or cannot take it. You do know it takes 2 weeks for your brain to fully relax off work. Then you need your holiday, you are missing the healing part of your time off and we had to fight to get all of this. Now it is easier and people get more done at work. Next we go to a 4 day week. My son works 8 shifts a month for the full months pay. He was so bored he went to school again and got his building license. He still has his first job but he has a building company too with full time employees. Some of them are guys that work the same 8 shifts a month that he does.
Many here do not know how good we have it and Sunscreen is free from the Cancer Council if you cannot afford it.
As for the water in toilets, we have to be careful with water but that isn’t the reason the water was first made lower. All babies are head heavy and they love to play in any water. Too many were drowning and now they can’t. What you call the DMV we had to go to ours during COVID and we knew it would take longer because we had to line up outside. Only 3 people could go in at once and I could have cut that line because I had only just learned to stand up and walk again but not for long. I stayed in that line standing, I leaned on my husband a bit. We were there for 25 minutes and on our way home again and that was including line time. The nice lady who greeted us at the door knew I was in trouble by looking at me so she sat me inside until it was my husband’s turn, he was next in line. They are very nice people in there and efficient. Thank you.

I'd like to correct you about paid parental leave in France. Since 1946 when paid maternity leave commenced in France, expecting mothers now get 16 weeks off-six weeks before birth and 10 weeks after. If there are complications, the mother is paid an extra four weeks and if there are twins or triplets plus on board the maternity leave is 34 or 36 weeks paid! Fathers get up to 25 days of paternity leave-four days of COMPULSORY LEAVE taken immediately after childbirth and 21 days which the father ("father" includes same sex partners) can take within six months of delivery.

On Paid Time Off, the standard across the board for Full-Time Employees is 20 business days per year (4 weeks).
If you’re a Part-Time employee (less than 40hr per week) the rate is calculated based on FTE pro-rata.
Some industries have increased leave and/or loading rates. For example; most wage based roles (paid by hour) have a percentage increase applied to hours off as loading.

We have just had a roundabout installed where our road crosses a major highway (not motorway or freeway) and movement through this is now almost immediate when before we had to wait for up to five minutes in rush hour. Simple and very efficient. The traffic circle as used in the US is a totally different system and far from being effective in promoting traffic flows.

It's true. Not only every city has a fantastic park, but every shire or municipality. Every suburb. Councils win awards for them & it's quite a feather in their caps. There are awards for best adventure playgrounds, picnic grounds, basketball courts, playing fields, all free. there are lots of free public swimming pools, skateparks & more. They are all beautiful, super safe for all ages & intricately built. Bathrooms/toilet blocks are cleaned daily & inhabited by the homeless? Nope not here...because we are not America.
Okay, I might sound like I'm blowing my own trumpet, but it's a real shiny trumpet worth blowing.

So traffic lights are used for major intersections, Then we have roundabouts or what he calls traffic circles inside suburbs and smaller towns, It's so you don't get jammed up, you let the cars already on the roundabout go around wait until you know where they're going and if there is a gap you can get in behind the car going around, no need to wait for lights just be considerate and it'll keep moving

Note Tristan lived here for a couple of years and lived in southern Queensland in a semi tropical climate. That water park is in Queensland. Not like that in other states. Most of his comments are based on what he experienced there. Which will be different from other states. Not that we have it bad elsewhere. We dont at all. The water levels and the dual buttons in our toilets are minimal because we are a very dry country subject to severe droughts and water restrictions. And his point about sunscreen mmmm nope. Maybe free at some beaches but no where else. A big 2 litre container is usually about $20. Yep our paid recreation leave is 4-6 weeks depending where you work. and you can save it up for a big holiday. And it cant be refused.

In Australia, if you work for the same employer for more than 7 years you accrue paid long service leave (LSL). I can’t remember how days you accrue each month, but I worked for the NSW Dept of Education for 35 years. I took 2 x 4 weeks of LSL during term time to travel overseas. Six months before I retired I took 6 months LSL on full pay. When I retired I still had 4 months of LSL and they paid me 4 months of salary in lieu of the leave.

To many Americans, Australia is considered socialist. But Democratic Socialism puts people first. We have compulsory Registration/voting held on a weekend for all of our levels of Government. We have far more Government controls than the US hence why we have greater services, such as great parks, better roads, brilliant free/low cost health services. We have very active overviewing authorities that don't have to have legal charges laid before they intervene.
So basically, the so called Freedom the US claims to have, actually creates the very opposite to what we have.
And as Tristan indicated, you would NEVER tell an Aussie that he/she isn't free, with five weeks annual leave, on top of other yearly holidays including the Christmas break.

A social democracy in a rich country just makes sense. But what the US spends on its military could fund so much for the rest of the people. We can't spend that amount on the military, and don't really need to, so it gets spent on services. I've lived in several different countries but I'll always come home to Australia.

In Europe toilets are the same, low water level and they are designed that 💩 wend down just with little or no smear. And 2 buttons or one button for saving water. My toilet have 1 button and if you press for a short time, relese a smaller amount of water...
Those uncut and with chicken sushi rolls maybe come from Korea, they have a similar called kimbab. They are a bit bigger and wrapped inside vegies, raw or cooked meat, fried egg and so on.

Put a half or full brick in the cistern. Good way of saving water - my Dad used to do this before dual flush toilets. Doesn't effect the efficiency. 😊
