    Nice review as always. Just picked up a used Kush Electra for $800--which sounds great so far but recall is a bit problematic. If the Electra doesn't work out, the 1974 sounds like a good alternative. For those asking about analog vs. plugin EQs, the only way to really appreciate what good analog EQs can do over software is to just hear it for yourself.

    Hello , David I bought the 1974 and got it yesterday. I needed something for my mixes under a grand and this is it. After trying it for some mixes i am doing this has an amazing tone to it. Great demo!..... Good stereo bus EQs are hard to come by, and trying to tweak two channels equally is a real pain. Aside from studio use, I also want one at home for playing back vinyl LPs. Many older LPs need re-equalization to sound their best, and this EQ looks like it would be great for that. I currently use a Vintage Audio Skyline M3D, which is sort of like a stereo Maag EQ3 with 6 wide stereo bands. It's very nice, but this Drawmer is on my wish list now... and the price is right!

    I found a cool trick with this unit on metal guitars where you use the peak filter in the low end to boost around 85hz ( depends on the range the guitars are tuned to) but it just gives you a bit of that moving air feeling you get off a live cabinet in the room (which I feel is lacking in a lot of productions). Anyways just thought I would share, also like you always say - you absolutely NEED low end on the sides, especially for metal guitars!

    I was waiting for more than 10 minutes (1974) so you would turn the octave knob in low- mid section for some juicy wide mid range boost, haha. But it was worth it. It's not API 5500 but it sure can be more than the right stuff if tweaked right. Great video!

  • @b.hornetiii.6771

    How would you compare 1974 to Elysia Xfilter? Is this good unit for mastering EDM as a second eq unit to add some "mojo" to the mix or it's more of a rock thing in your opinion? Some people complain about the "harsh" highs etc. Elysia is nice sounding almost too perfect, this looks like a bad boy of equalizers, haha. p.s. And why is "the headroom" (26db or higher) in EQ so important I'm looking for this explanation all over the web ... ? They have now "mastering version with more headroom ..., but what it does, is it just (again and again...) a specs marketing thing? Thanks ...

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  4 місяці тому +1

      The xfilter (original, don't know what changed in the mastering version) had no headroom. I love Elysia products but that one was really not it. It would run out of headroom earlier then pretty much anything else, even when cutting. Rack version was the same. And no, headroom is everything, not a marketing gimmick. The 74 is a great budget eq, better than the x, and you have to spend quite a lot more to pass it. And it's super versatile.

      @@mixbustv I'm still reading about this "headroom" and it's giving me a "headache" 😄 One guy wrote: "Headroom is where you go when you are reading in the red on the VU meter. Is the device you are feeding going to clip at those increased levels ... That where the headroom comes in." And: "I'm afraid the gear with a later position in the signal flow should have a larger headroom than previous gear." So, can you avoid this "headroom disaster" if you before entering into digital domain (via A/D converter) with your mastering chain that has EQ with a lower headroom spec. in it just lower the overall gain (level match everything) so it doesn't reach the 0 db point, the point of distortion? You leave some little space ... I just can't believe I'm still looking, thinking about this, haha.

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  3 роки тому +3

      You're asking the guy who has both.. it's gonna be a trade no matter which one you pick. Drawmer is always right, it's more flexible, especially in the low end but everywhere really with the variable Q, API is faster, meaning more punch, but also more colored but you don't always want that color. Better highs the API (with scott lieber op amps) and more focused punchy low end which for EDM is amazing, but the Drawmer is not slow at all, just the API is the punchiest of all eq's out there. Drawmer can be more surgical too, and you say you do cutting ITB, wait until you do it with hw then tell me. Anyways, gun to the head and having to pick only one, I'd go with Dramwer for 2bus or mastering, but you if you hear the API, you will want that one soon too, definitely before the other one you're planning on getting

    do you still have this unit? I'm considering buying it to use as a master eq and to push my Dangerous Convert AD+. Would you recommend it for that application?

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  3 роки тому

      yes I still have this unit and no I do not recommend that to push the ad. You need to look at headroom, pushing a converter like the ad+ is not easy because it has incredibly high headroom and almost any unit out there will crap out before you can ever clip that. I said this before, you cannot cheap out.

    debating on this Drawmer 1974 (4band) eq $1149, vs API SR24 (4band) eq $1230, vs Warm Audio WA-273 (3band) eq but has dual pre amp $1599. I have a Focusrite Clarett + 8 pre, pre amps sound good. If the WA 273 eq preamp is tons better, I will deal with the 3 band eq. If not, I'd rather have the extra mid band eq for more control. especially since I will be using on MIXBUS. I guess it boils down to the Drawmer 1974 and the API SR24 then. any ideas?

    Hi again, I commented 3 months ago. I ended up buying the unit, it worked really nice for about 2 months. I then started hearing a humming whenever I activated it or took it off bypass (The humming is independent of any knob settings) I checked all my cables swapped them out, plugged it into different inputs on my interface, still hum. My Sales guy at SweetWater sent out a replacement, I tried out the replacement still hum on the new unit. Finally tech said it could be electrical interference in my home or whatever, but I never changed anything in my setup (or my home) first two months and it worked great. I'm running a new Focusrite Clarett 8 pre interface. any ideas?

    What is the cut/boost steps in dB on this eq?

    • @OlavSFlaa
      @OlavSFlaa 5 років тому

      @@mixbustv I use the Drawmer gear mostly for mastering and wished there was a 12/6-dB range switch so I could have 0,5dB steps. Otherwise this eq does everything I need at a cost I probably can afford. I have considered the TK Audio TK-lizer 2 which seems to be more targeted for mastering. However it is slightly more expensive and has a constant q of 0,5. Sometimes I need to adjust frequencies within a narrow band. Also, I like the Drawmer equipment in general and they have great customer support. So far I have bought the 1973, 1978 and 1968. Would you recommend the 1974 for mastering and would you use an eq with 1dB steps when you do mastering yourself?

    • @OlavSFlaa
      @OlavSFlaa 5 років тому

      @@mixbustv Thank you for your helpful answer! 1500USD per unit is the absolute maximum of what I will ever spend on outboard gear for mixing/mastering. I will loose my hearing because of aging long before I can afford to upgrade my whole system to justify an eq like the massive passive etc. To my (and my customers) ears, the transparency of the Drawmer gear is good enough. However I hear that the 1968 is softening the bass a little and that the 1978 compresses a bit aggressively so they are not ideal in all cases. However, the 1973 has worked perfect in all my projects. As long as the transparency and noise level is at least on par with the other equipment in these series I think the 1974 is one of the best options within my budget.

    Hello David, thank you for such high quality videos on your channel! Thinking about this one as my first analog EQ. May be you could help me to answer some nerd questions: 1. Are Low and High bands shelf or bell? (Should be shelf, but i couldn't find it clearly in the manual) 2. Though the slope control is placed in Low section, accordingly to the manual it changes only the slope of Low Cut filter (the same for High and High Cut). Is it true or does it affect both bands at the same time? (the manual wasn't clear for me again) 3. Just curious: why High Cut can operate here up to 32 kHz? Is it kind of anti-aliasing filter before ADC for those, who works at higher sample rates? Looks a bit unusual for an analog EQ. Thanks in advance!

    • @gabrielgbrl
      @gabrielgbrl 5 років тому

      @@mixbustv Thanks for reply! Yes, my first thought was exactly as you describe and the panel design shows it also. I was confused only after reading the operating manual, it says something different there, like for HighCut filter: "FREQUENCY: 4kHz - 32kHz This continually variable control attenuates the signal above the frequency set. The rate at which the attenuation occurs is set by the ‘Slope’ control set in the High band (see 6)." The Low and High bands have a Bell-Icon next to the description and no word about EQ-Type or if they are affected by Slope control. The Slope description looks like a Low and High Cut filter description and doesn't really fit to a shelf-eq. So actually the manual says: Low and High bands are Bell and Slope affects only Low und High Cut filters. Maybe I'm too nerdy, but it's somehow weird. :) Anyway, I think it's a great EQ and going to try it.
