Every time Pete mentions a player and some stat tied to that player I double check it. Every single time he is right. He just knows that Don Blasingame hit .281 in 1962. It's incredible. What a savant!

Pete was durable and had a 113 career OPS+. He was a significant player but nowhere near one of the best ever, about three wins a year better than replacement level. Rod Carew was better, Tony Gwynn was better, Rickey Henderson was better, Joe Morgan was better among top of the lineup players during Pete’s playing career.

He was the worst starting first baseman in major league history 1982-1986 and he had a horrible sophomore season in 1964. You will not find similarly awful stretches in the other players’ careers. Cobb outhit Rose by about 65 points and didn’t kill his own team in a thousand ways. Haha, let’s see if they let Pete in while Bench is alive. Hold your breath if your best color is purple.

@@azdbuk I don’t know what you are lolling about, Fanboi, since nobody denies Pete’s boomer-friendly volume of compilation stats, haha the facts are all there, but Pete is not going in the Hall of Fame because influential figures in the game correctly perceive that letting Pete Rose in the Hall would just instantly shut down the support of millions more fans as with work stoppages and health emergencies, so unless they can exhume the Rose betting scandal for one last round of dialectical distraction, unless there are some divisive and overriding social engineering and/or wealth transfer tropes to be exploited, Pete Rose is not going in the Hall of Fame.

Pete was a durable singles hitter with decent defense at several positions. He drew walks and ran the bases well and played baseball like he played sandlot football and talked like a Cincinnati meat cutter. He was a championship player and he was a competent manager as well.
Pete Rose, as a manager, bet on regular season play involving the team he was managing.
People think this ought to be overlooked, and that Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.
      Think about this.
Henry Aaron and Joe Morgan and Johnny Bench have commented on whether Pete ought to be in the Hall of Fame.

Growing up a Mets fan in the 70's I hated Pete Rose, especially after his fight with little Buddy Harrelson in the 73 NLCS. But there was also that grudging respect for his talents as a ballplayer. He played the game the way it should be played. What he did was wrong, but he's paid for it. He should be reinstated and recognized for his accomplishments as a player. While he is alive.

Say what you will, but Pete Rose is one of the greatest ambassadors of the game. His stories are always the best. Baseball has made an example of this great player, yet tuned their heads, for so many years, on rampant steroid use. Apparently, you could cheat, you just couldn't bet. Five will get you ten, Pete Rose never took steroids. Here's another hypocrisy. Why are there odds and point spreads for every NFL football game? Is it just because it's interesting?

Pete Rose is also a habitual liar. Lied for 20 years about not betting on baseball and only came clean 1) to make money on a book and 2) because he thought it was his only chance to get into the Hall of Fame. So we're supposed to believe a habitual liar whose story only makes him look better? He's a dirtball who cheated on his wife, cheated on people he dealt with throughout his life. One of the reasons he got busted is he stiffed the guy making bets for him. Refused to pay what he owed. You guys are kissing the ass of a complete dirtball. Yeah, he can quote stats. I had a couple with Pete about 20 years ago in Cincinnati. I was with Target and we were opening stores in Cincy and he was doing some promotional work for Target. I told him I remembered when he was coming up and nobody thought he had a chance to take Blasingame's position. He said 'Hutch didn't like him'. I should also mention that he was the last one to make it to our dinner (there were 6 of us) and it was football season, so the first words out of his mouth when he arrived were 'How'd Notre Dame do today?'
Later the conversation inevitably got around to his suspension. I said I thought he was in an impossible spot; they weren't going to let him back into baseball unless he admitted gambling, and if he admitted gambling, they'd never let him in. He looked me right in the eye and said "I'll NEVER admit to gambling". We talked about a lot of stuff; salaries, toughest pitchers, (Marichal) best player he played with (Schmidt) and so on.

That put us up by half a game in the pennant race.
