    Less than 2 minutes into the video and already got the info I was hoping to find. Being able to set "Friendly" names for devices so I don't have to know who's texting from a random string of numbers and letter, lol. Skilling up on knowledge before I buy a few devices to set up my own network. Your channel has been incredibly helpful!

    Your series finally kicked me over the edge and I got my first Haltec units last week. Their coil antennas suck, so now I’m looking for cheap/but good enough antenna replacements. Couldn’t even get 300M LoS with them. Looking forward to more in the series!

      Nice! Yeah, I don't think any of them have great stock antennas and it's usually the first thing I recommend people upgrade.

      If you mean the small coil antenna on the board that's only for Bluetooth and WiFi. My Heltec came with a 1/4 wave stub on a 50ohm connector (I don't remember the name but it's the common one).

      Look for Paradar antennas and liw loss coax. You will need them outdoors high up.

    Thank you for these series! I’m learning so much and I want to feel well rounded in my knowledge before I purchase a few devices. My hope is to create a network over the span of an 80 mile valley with mountains to communicate with family in emergencies, but not rely on HAM radios or my family having any deep technical knowledge to communicate. That’s why I think meshtastic is so unique. All I will need to do is train my family on what settings to have turned on, and what channel to text in.

    • @The_Comms_Channel

      Sure thing! I'm glad you're learning and finding the series helpful! That's a great use-case and one of the reasons I'm a fan of Meshtastic. It's hard to get people to get a ham license or learn how to use radios and this is a great simple to use alternative.

    Loving the advanced playlist however a suggestion; put 'advanced meshtasric' AFTER the video topic as on a phone you can't easily tell what each video is about. Yer teaching me all the things I wanna know after basic setup of a node - thanks. Hoping I find MQTT infos. Hate how the phone apps don't like controlling more than one node, but you just showed me how to use the web app for a 2nd; can the web app successfully control multiple nodes??

    WiFi on the heltec v3 is about 30ft, it's bad. So put it near a spare wifi point, then connect the board to the router. That allows you to use a Web browser from any PC browser or phone app. Or connect back home via vpn and remote control the heltec.

    I noticed on the pcb board that these meshtastic work on. The “L” and the “H” when swapped, jump either to 433-470ish Megahertz to 858 to 929MHZ . just in case people have bought the wrong one can swap it over. I got stuck with it being the 929 and changed the pass through the resistor. Now I can use it multiple times areas. Making sure to wipe it after changing it immediately otherwise it will freeze.

    Understanding channel encryption is easy since each channel gets it own PSK. But what about when you DM directly between nodes? Is that considered "Primary" channel and thus would use the primary PSK?

    My question is assuming that this is being done by Bluetooth what stops someone else from accessing your device settings.

    • @ryanb9395
      @ryanb9395 8 місяців тому

      They would have to be physically close to the device and know your Bluetooth pin

    • @The_Comms_Channel
      @The_Comms_Channel  8 місяців тому +2

      Bluetooth has a max range of about 300 feet so they would have to be close enough to connect and would have to have your pin as Ryan suggested. You can also turn off Bluetooth for devices that are just acting as routers/repeaters. Thanks for the question!

    I have another idea that can put meshtastic to good use. Aside from allowing you to communicate over long distances in areas where you don't have cell service or other signals meshtastic can be use to communicate with people during crysis of any kind. Using meshtastic that way would certanly show meshtastic and lora in general in better light. I know i'd use it the way i described it.

    If you have done the homework, what's the diff between Ham and no Ham other than encryption being off by law. Higher power, etc.? or just encryption toggle? also, I get an Implicant ack when contacting others. Is there a channel that should be used just for public?

    • @The_Comms_Channel

      Just allows for more power and turns encryption off. The default "LongFast" channel is the public default.

      @@The_Comms_ChannelI tested this but found no more power tx other than before I added my call sign. I also am looking at shifting the freq to move it off the public and make it more private. @@KH07734 That will depend on the device you're using. Most devices are using a SX1262 which has a max of 22dBm. There are some devices out there like the Station G1 that have a power amplifier.

    • @ChrisC-fp9qu
      @ChrisC-fp9qu 4 місяці тому

      Hello I just got 2 Heltec V3 nodes, and im currently learning about it. From what I know, the circle with the question mark is GPS. Most don't have GPS but GPS can be added so if no GPS you get Question Mark ?. When your using the meshtastic app you have a choice to direct your phone GPS to the node and then an arrow will appear in place of the question mark.

    This is similar to AES IntelliNet Radios used for burglary and fire alarms. I had a job 20 years ago in Chicago Lincoln Park and I did an unorthodox install of 2 radios in one house with the repeating turned off on the basement radio that was connected to the alarm control and a second radio installed in the top floor to get the signal out on the AES network.
    Also did you ever look at the Motorola Talkabout radios that are doing a similar text over radio feature?
