just fiddle around in youtube to find some infos about the RF16mm and realize my favorite camera youtube combatroller took it for a test. i like what i see and ordering one while i am typing here. cheers for that brent! your videos do matter!
Dear Brent & Camera Lady, You have honed your edge s in composition, in light assessment and shadow assessment; nor is your expertise in geology lost on this easterner. The passion you cultivate always shines through - across the range of what nature gives you to work with during any given 'lesson'. I've observed that passion of yours when your hopes for a concerto of clouds, sky, light, streaks, falls short of your expectations AND exceeds them. And in this one your smile describes an arc of the joy of fulfillment - that consistency earns you highest compliments....and gratitude that you 'take us with you two'.
Good luck for me seeing this video. I just bought the RF 16mm F/2.8 for the same reasons you did. I've used a GoPro Hero 8 for mobile vlogging but I don't love the image quality. I haven't had a chance to use the new lens yet. I believe the cameras automatically invoke in-camera corrections when you shoot video or JPEG, but not RAW. In fact, you can't disable it. I'm glad to see Adobe's 14-35 profile correction works decently. The sunstar still looks a little weird, though. I know the digital stabilization crops some, but I'll probably use it anyway. I have a mini-tripod for a vlogging handle, along with long arms. Hopefully that will give me an acceptable level of distance and stabilization with minimal correction in post. I also have the EF 16-35 F4L so I expect I'll continue to favor that lens for stills. Thanks so much for this informative demo.
I had a similar experience with the 16 f2.8 vs 16-35 f4, for size weight/price its amazing and an excellent choice in most situations, But for big commercial and critical work the f4 is superior.
The composition of the rocks, dragon egg and sky colors are beautiful Regarding the vlogging with 16mm (of which I have no experience) these are my comments solely from my visual Starting at 2:55 while turning around, the edge distortion was a bit dizzying @5:16 the movement across the rocks seemed very blurred and jittery @5:35, i seems like i can see individual frames as you move up the rock to reveal the dragon egg rock. @14:35 the rocks in the bottom right by the tripod legs look to be moving around like jello jiggling. Love your channel and your great photos and videos
I am new to this kind of photography and watching you visualize your compositon in the field was like taking a class! Great eye for detail. I'm not sure If I can develop that but you have a real talent and i learned a lot. Thanks. I am buying the new R6 MKII for vlogging and will be getting the 16mm for that reason, but you have now given me a reason to get the 14-35 L as well. I love the difference in the sun star and can see myself going out and trying to recreate photos with that idea for a composition in mind. Nicely done.
Hey thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it! I'm glad the video helped. I've also pre-ordered the R6 mk ii and am really looking forward to it. The 14-35 is an awesome all around lens, for sure.
How about an ultimate ultra wide lens versus death match !!! Samyang/Rokinon RF 14 vs canon RF 16 vs irix 15mm manual for landscapes/astro. All kinda near the same price too.
Awesome timelapse makes me want to get out over the Peak District where we have those type of rock formations but here in the uk is just rain rain rain at minute lol 😂 nice to see the ef L glass is still up there 👍👍
Thanks man! Yeah, I would love to go timelapse everything in the Peak District, for sure! It definitely rains a tad more than it does here though... :P
Just got it an realised that I won't be able to use whit my formatt hitech filter set, because it has to be mounted on the lens threads an that part of the rf 16mm is moving when focusing 😢😢
Absolutely gorgeous images. I will actually be shooting with my new R5 + 16-35 F2.8... which were both ridiculously expensive, but that is now behind me :) I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to make some very nice images with this combo. Oh, and I want to add, I love your taste in PP. Very similar to my own. I've been doing digital photography for over 20 years, yet I often say, I have "normal people" taste in photos, and definitely NOT the taste of a lot of pros... or photography snobs. I'm NOT afraid of color and contrast, and I freaking LOVE HDR :) ....and not afraid to say it out loud, either :) It's MY artwork, and I can do anything I want with it. Keep at it bro ! Outstanding work :) Just subscribed.
oh that's a good question, idk though, I haven't seen or used that lens in over a decade. It's stlil gonna be better on the weather-sealing at least, lol.
I am too lazy to search but have you done anything on lens filters? I used to get cheap filters just to protect my lenses but do the cheap ones affect the picture quality, like for sharpness etc....I was seeing some flare on this video and made me think of filters. My RF 16mm arrives Tuesday and I wondered which brand filter you put on yours. Thx.
Yeah, I've done quite a few videos on filters over the years. I don't remember what they all are because I have like 300+ videos now though, lol. For the last year or two I've been using the Breakthrough Photography filters and am really happy with them. I have updated gear links in all of my recent and popular videos though, so that's all what I use. In the past I've also had good experiences with Polar Pro, NiSi, and Kase filters,. None of those are cheap though, especially the Breakthrough and Polar Pros. I definitely tend to stay away from cheap filters these days, as yes, they do have the potential to lower your image quality.
Thank you! I was considering renting the 14-35 for $159 for 14 days, but I think I’m just going to purchase the 16 mm for $299 and I will have it forever I’m using the EosR. Will be in Sedona, Grand Canyon & Tucson and hoping to try to capture the Milky Way too, as well as the landscapes.
I just got the rf 16 mm f 2.8 for my vacation and it made so much fun for different kind of things including people photography. But back in berlin I tried it for street photography and found the distortions quite havy. I don’t have a comparison to other lenses like your ef 16-35 mm f 4.0… have you seen any differences between these lenses concerning that distortion issue so far? Thanks, really like the chilled atmosphere of your videos and would like some Ps “slow’ explanations for people with very little knowledge there. Have a good one ✌️📸🤳
The rf 16 does have a lot of distortion, but it cleans up pretty well with the lens profile corrections in camera raw. I haven't tried the lens for anything other than landscape and astro though, so I couldn't say how it does for that. I usually use my 16-35 for that stuff and it does pretty well.
Hi. Great video as always. When you're walking & vlogging, are you totally handheld or do you use a gimbal? Would the IS on the 16-35 f4 help stabilize video better? (I'm using an old Tokina 16-28 and finding the video way too shaky but AF is also super loud and slow.) I'm debating on upgrading to RF 16mm or the EF 16-35 f4 IS. The RF 14-35 is out of my price range at this time.
Hi Thank you for the video. Can you share any interior photos taken with RF16? Want to purchase new gear for Real estate phoros, Canon EOS R along with RF16 lens.
Oh idk about that. I've never tried filters with this lens. Aside from the filter thread size being pretty small, I'd personally question whether it was strong enough to hold a larger drop-in filter system.
Hey Brent I just got my rf 16mm 2.8 and I wanted to ask, is it normal to not have any af while shooting stills in manual mode on the camera? And when I try to go in and change it in the camera, there's no option besides manual when I use this lens. Also, can you recommend a decent computer for editing pictures and video that won't break the bank? Thanks
Yeah, that's weird. If you go into your af menu, you should be able to select AF from the AF mode option. It kind of sucks that the lens is too small to have the switch for it.
@@BrentHall yea I agree about not being able to have a switch. Im going to do the new firmware update so maybe that issue will be fixed. Ifnot I think I'll send it back. Thanks
@@BrentHall I got it changed back finally. I put another lens on, changed it to manual and then back to auto, put the 16 mm back on and the option came back to change it back to auto. I updated the firmware also. This was on the r6 btw incase anyone else had a similar problem.

Nice video. The profile for the RF 24-105 f7,1 (not the L) set to 143 distortion correction works really well too

FYI Amazon sells an aftermarket RF16 hood for about $15. I think the lens needs a hood.

“If you are still here, that’s amasing”… lol. Great content man! Congrats!
Thanks Max, I appreciate that!
Great you came back and got the shot!
Yeah, I'm really glad I didn't leave early like I had started to, that sunset was well worth it!

That would be cool! I don't have the Irix lens though.
Very good video. Look forward to the next one.
Many thanks!
thanks excellent video, with regards to the vignetting I'm guessing a polarizing filter will probably increase the issue a degree more?
You should come check out Iceland if you're into cold weather, you could probability shoot some crazy pictures here👌💙

Very useful video, Brent. How low did you have to go setting up in order to turn the puddle into a pond? I like that trick, so now I need the tip!

Brent, which lens is better perform between Canon rf 16mm and Samyang 14mm, especially flairing from the sun…?

Just got the 16 mm, do you think lightroom will get the profil sometime ?
Yeah, it'll definitely get it at some point. Adobe just got the RF 14-35mm profile, which works pretty well for it for now.
You've probably figured it out by now but the enhanced image stabil is so much better than ibis. Ibis gives a jellowy effect.
whats the setting of your time lapse? or in aperture priority the shutter speed adjust?
Thanks for this great video. Why are you interested in the RF 14-35 but not the RF 15-35? Is it because of how expensive the latter is?
Yeah, the 15-35 is more expensive, way larger, heavier, and possibly not quite as sharp. Though, if I could afford it, I would definitely buy both.
@@BrentHall for vlogging would you prefer the 14-35 over the 15-35 despite the loss of 1 stop and heavy vinyette in video
Probably, for weight. My arms and shoulders are pretty pathetic.
