  • Bruce Lee for the 8-bit Apple II, released in 1984 by Datasoft, programmed by Rick Mirsky.
    I video captured myself playing through the game from beginning to end (it's my first time in 35 years, so apologies for my somewhat rusty gameplay! Yes, I know, I inadvertently missed picking up the Ying-Yang object near the end of the game. I think it only adds points to your score).
    Captured from a real hardware based Apple IIc computer (NOT emulated).

    I tried to play this when I was prolly about 11yo. I couldn't control it very well; I think I was using the keybosrd?
    I got it (a copy) on a 5 1/4" floppy from a kid in my 5th grade class in '89 or so, along with "Alf" and "Night Falls"

    very obtuse game, keen to see how this is mastered.

    I had this game for my Apple IIc. I found it strange that the title screen was in double-hires mode, while the game itself was in regular hires mode.

      The title screen shows up in regular Hi-Res on the Apple II Plus (or 64K Apple IIe) but Double-Hi-Res if it detects a system that support it! I didn't discover this until I bought a IIGS in the late 80's! Back in '84 though, I imagine there were still a large number of II Plus and IIe owners without Extended 80 Columns Cards, so most games ended up supporting the lowest common denominator for the graphics. I think Double-Hi-Res was also more tricky to program, there were only a handful of games that used DHR mode!

      I had a ][e with the 80col card and so it may have worked on my machine in DHR. Good gosh its been a long time. Programing the entire game in DHR mode would have probably made the performance go for a crap. And taken significantly more disk space and memory. But it would have been amazing had there been remixed version for the GS even.

      @@wishusknight3009 - You would've required 128K in your IIe for DHR. Yeah, most DHR games I've seen were sluggish (thinking back to the Data East arcade ports!) except for Airheart. I always wished there were GS remake ports of Wings of Fury, Castle Wolfenstein, Aztec and others! We got a couple though...

      @@Apple2gs I only had a handful of games that used Double-hires, and they ran noticeably slower than standard hires-games. But I had the original version of the Apple IIc, later versions had a processor that ran at higher clock speeds. I was told by another IIc user with a newer version that the graphics animation in double-hires games was much smoother.

      @@Akira625 - That faster IIc would be the 'Apple IIc Plus' (I wrote the Wikipedia article on it; that's my actual IIc Plus in the photos there too!). :) The problem is the IIc Plus used a cache-based accelerator, so some parts of the game may still run at 1 MHz. Either way, I found the IIc Plus throws the timing off on Double-Hi-Res games, like Robocop's 3 minute game timer is accelerated into a 45 second timer, plus the gameplay becomes difficult since its a bit TOO fast. Heavy Barrel runs at the same speed, and Rampage the extra speed only helps when there's a lot of sprites all at once that normally cause slow down. Death Sword's animation is much zipper, but the gameplay is harder at that speed. Most 8-bit II games were designed to run at 1 MHz and accelerators disrupt their timing (the IIGS is a different story, games greatly benefit from acceleration. It smooths them out, rather than running them too fast).

    Sadly I only had a cracked version of this game as a kid in the 80s. and the second side of the disk was nonworking. So I could only play through about 40% of the game.

    • @Apple2gs
      @Apple2gs  4 роки тому +1

      Weren't all cracked versions (and the original) only a one-sided disk? Maybe you had a glitched copy? I got through about 80% of the game back in the day, but only just finished it this year! Always wanted to see the ending but never had the patience until now. :)

      @@Apple2gs I would have been about 9 or 10 years old around 1986 when I was trying to get through it. I will really need to look now. I still have all those disks. I am largely sure that the first disk comprised of all the top levels and you had to flip the disk when going into underground.... But I will check it out. You could be right. If your copy is just a single 140k image than its a single side... And I had some awful glidtched copy. All I remember was it asking me to flip the disk and then the apple monitor (dbugger) would come up indicating a crash of sorts.

      @@Apple2gs Ok, I can't tell how many images it is. i have like 4 of them and I don't know if they are all different releases or if two disk versions. One of them looks like it could be but it does not explicitly say "side a" and "side b" like many other games do. I will see if I can find my physical disks later on and find out.

    • @Apple2gs
      @Apple2gs  4 роки тому

      @@wishusknight3009 - I'm fairly certain there was only a one-sided version of the game (the versions archived on the Asimov FTP site seem to back that). It may ask you to re-insert the disk if its removed from the drive, and if your copy was glitched, maybe that's what you saw?
