My brother and I just reflected on this. We used to know it all and scoffed at the old guys and their advice as if we knew it all. Just so happens that most of these old timers were really giving us the best advice at the perfect time. Although I was a smart kid and listened fairly well, I must say that I wish I listened better

Layne, I’ve recently found your UA-cam channel and have been binge watching your videos all weekend. I have finally found a fitness UA-camr I can trust because of your experience and ability to explain so well. I aspire to be like you! You have influenced me to consider studying nutrition in grad school. Thanks so much!

This is exactly my life. In my work area I would talk about different ways of doing things, I talk about the pro's and cons. Sometimes I say I don't really know and let's try to find out.
Sometimes there are people who just pick one way of doing things. And they just go: "This is the way to do it, I know it for sure." People tend to go for the second way of talking.
Being overconfident about something can bring some positives. But I guess that's kinda abusing our disability of judging the levels of expertise in people who know more about subjects then we do.

The problem is that people don't understand probability. They think that if something cannot be "proven" with 100% certainty, it's equally likely that it's entirely wrong. So if 95% of published papers support a theory, people think, "Well it's not 100%, so my nonsensical proposition is just as likely."

Dude I see this so much..in politics, fitness, or even day to day conversations. It's just idiots being swayed by marginally more informed idiots who speak loudly and with confidence. People are petty and just want someone to give them simple answers so they can switch their brains off and follow.

Yes this makes complete sense! And sadly as an analogy same as in the fitness world in the financial world people will fall for other “advisors/experts” ideas because they sound confident. When at the end of the day they may have talked them into buying a tax free product when they aren’t in a high tax bracket for example! Because they didn’t take the time to understand that individuals financial situation and think tax free products are the way to go!🤦🏼‍♀️ You hit the nail on the head Layne! Great video!

there are videos on youtube of regular people placing laser pointers inches above the water on one side of a lake shore and then miles away their friend can see the laser and even directly shine it into the cameras lens which is just inches above the water. So where is the curve? where are the tens and even hundreds of feet of curve that are supposed to be there?

The more you know, the more confusing subjects get ... right on the money, Layne. The more I learn about subjects, the more I see the gray areas and how difficult it can be to come to conclusions on EVERYTHING in life. But its really really difficult to be successful in life with that type of uncertainty. Whether you're in Sales, Financial advising, Real Estate... whatever, the last thing someone want to hear is a bunch of uncertainty. You need to slam your fist down on the table with CERTAINTY of what you are claiming. Hell, look at the man in the White House. Dude makes people believe he is a God.

I'm really looking forward to stop walking 2-3 hours per day because it's really cutting down my studying time which is crucial for me ( vet medicine)

At last, someone has come out and said something. I only have a mere BA, but going to college did teach me how to think all by my little self and I can still do that at the age of 54. Occasionally the human side of me can't help itself and gets sucked in by someone preaching about how such-and-such is THE way to do something, but once I've had a chance to really think it over and look at other evidence I come to my own conclusions. Things like the flat earth theory, that mankind has not really been in space, and other assorted silly conspiracies floating around out there just boggle my mind.

The bad thing about "facts" is that they often turn out to be wrong, and once people have accepted an assertion as "fact," they cling to it like life itself. We could have much the same discussion on "knowledge." The only reasonable position is skepticism, especially when "facts" from different sources are contradictory. The biggest problem is human ego. The average person is simply not all that smart, and the smart ones are often not as smart as they imagine they are. What really frustrates me is that so many people seem to believe "education" makes them smart. I dropped out of school before finishing the 8th grade, and as a result, "educated" people often summarily discount my reasoning, but a dumbass is a dumbass, and there are a lot of well educated dumbasses running around...

Great video :) Summarizes how those who actually know shit may not be taken seriously because people want to be soothed with confidence rather than hearing facts. Particularly in relationships :P Women want to hear commitment, happily ever after etc. because otherwise "I don't feel safe" ;) That was pretty much joke, but I think the same phenomena stands in every field. Religion is another example. We don't fucking care that one doesn't add to another. We want to be soothed with eternal life and meaning to life etc. Cheers ;)

Totally agree. He absolutely oversimplifies how our metabolism operates, to the point that he straight up lies to the whole world about our physiology. The whole keto community is clueless about biochemistry/bioenergetics. The keto community thinks you can eat 1000 grams of fat per day and lose body fat, "as long as your insulin levels are crazy low". 😂
