Holy crap the "Dunning Kruger Effect" is so damn true. I was so confident I knew everything about fitness one year into starting. LOL Sudden urge to buy gold....
My brother and I just reflected on this. We used to know it all and scoffed at the old guys and their advice as if we knew it all. Just so happens that most of these old timers were really giving us the best advice at the perfect time. Although I was a smart kid and listened fairly well, I must say that I wish I listened better
Layne, I’ve recently found your UA-cam channel and have been binge watching your videos all weekend. I have finally found a fitness UA-camr I can trust because of your experience and ability to explain so well. I aspire to be like you! You have influenced me to consider studying nutrition in grad school. Thanks so much!
This is exactly my life. In my work area I would talk about different ways of doing things, I talk about the pro's and cons. Sometimes I say I don't really know and let's try to find out. Sometimes there are people who just pick one way of doing things. And they just go: "This is the way to do it, I know it for sure." People tend to go for the second way of talking. Being overconfident about something can bring some positives. But I guess that's kinda abusing our disability of judging the levels of expertise in people who know more about subjects then we do.
The problem is that people don't understand probability. They think that if something cannot be "proven" with 100% certainty, it's equally likely that it's entirely wrong. So if 95% of published papers support a theory, people think, "Well it's not 100%, so my nonsensical proposition is just as likely."
Dude I see this so much..in politics, fitness, or even day to day conversations. It's just idiots being swayed by marginally more informed idiots who speak loudly and with confidence. People are petty and just want someone to give them simple answers so they can switch their brains off and follow.
I live in a former comunist country, when I was in hightshool one of my favorite teachers told us that for them (i.e.the generation that lived through comunism) the challenge was access to information and for us it will be discerning and choosing the right information.
LAYNE THIS IS SO RIDICULOUSLY WISE AND SO EFFING APPLICABLE TO 2023. this seriously deserves to be brought out of the vault…or what would 2023 Layne tell 2017 Layne about the current state of charlatan antics and the polarization of beliefs?
I’m a little new to the diet and exercise stuff, so I’m a little slow. But what I’m getting from this is that you’re trying to say I need to just buy gold?
Yes this makes complete sense! And sadly as an analogy same as in the fitness world in the financial world people will fall for other “advisors/experts” ideas because they sound confident. When at the end of the day they may have talked them into buying a tax free product when they aren’t in a high tax bracket for example! Because they didn’t take the time to understand that individuals financial situation and think tax free products are the way to go!🤦🏼♀️ You hit the nail on the head Layne! Great video!
This has been very helpful for me so now i know how to explain to people why i think and talk the way i do because everyone who asks me advice just want some quick fucking answer
I think the four stages of competence would have went nicely with your Dunning-Kruger point! Thanks for keeping it academic and being a scientist Layne!
lmao, you have a potential side career as a comedian. You're naturally hilarious. Had me laughing hard at your facial expression talking about flat earthers. Then falling out of my chair, "BUY GOLD! BUY GOLD!"
Great Vid Biolayne.....I love how you said "Save your beliefs for church, support your hypothesis with data".....Regardless where that came from I agree 100%.
Mr. Layne, I very rarely comment, but I will leave this one: the placebo effect can be one hell of a drug. People need to believe in what course of action they are taking. A big part of weight loss or fitness is mental.
Omg this is my problem! Everytime people ask me for advice on nutrition and training i have such a hard time explaining the truth, because as you said nothing is black and white and trying to explain the truth is quite complicated. Thank you for posting the video 😊
Please post about your neck herniation and your recovery time on that. I enjoyed watching you back recovery but I am really interested to know about your neck injury.
there are videos on youtube of regular people placing laser pointers inches above the water on one side of a lake shore and then miles away their friend can see the laser and even directly shine it into the cameras lens which is just inches above the water. So where is the curve? where are the tens and even hundreds of feet of curve that are supposed to be there?
Biolayne, you'll love this course called, "Calling Bullshit". These professors post all of their lectures online. It's great.callingbullshit.org/syllabus.html
The more you know, the more confusing subjects get ... right on the money, Layne. The more I learn about subjects, the more I see the gray areas and how difficult it can be to come to conclusions on EVERYTHING in life. But its really really difficult to be successful in life with that type of uncertainty. Whether you're in Sales, Financial advising, Real Estate... whatever, the last thing someone want to hear is a bunch of uncertainty. You need to slam your fist down on the table with CERTAINTY of what you are claiming. Hell, look at the man in the White House. Dude makes people believe he is a God.
Does walking is Good idea to increase neat? I usually hit 10000-15000 steps everyday. And another one- Should I decrease amount of steps while "metabolic recovery" ( adding 75 kcal per week as you said in metabolic damage) or should I mantain that number? I'm really looking forward to stop walking 2-3 hours per day because it's really cutting down my studying time which is crucial for me ( vet medicine)
We can't deny many, many people have drastically improved their health following a keto lifestyle. Would you say this would still be due to a calorie deficit?
Summary of a Keto Diet: Start Keto Diet Drop water weight quickly Motivation to succeed increases Eat less calories than your TDEE Lose weight Weight loss = better health markers Short Version: Weight Loss = Better health (no matter what diet you use to achieve it)
@biolayne The new nonsense is weight loss vs fat loss. Your fasted morning cardio "experts" now claim that HIIT causes more muscle loss over time. So, both clients lose weight, but HIIT loses more muscle. Fucking ludicrous.
this is why the things that everyone should be taught at school are critical thinking and logic. When you understand the philosophy of truth and science, you don't need to be an expert in everything.
At last, someone has come out and said something. I only have a mere BA, but going to college did teach me how to think all by my little self and I can still do that at the age of 54. Occasionally the human side of me can't help itself and gets sucked in by someone preaching about how such-and-such is THE way to do something, but once I've had a chance to really think it over and look at other evidence I come to my own conclusions. Things like the flat earth theory, that mankind has not really been in space, and other assorted silly conspiracies floating around out there just boggle my mind.
The bad thing about "facts" is that they often turn out to be wrong, and once people have accepted an assertion as "fact," they cling to it like life itself. We could have much the same discussion on "knowledge." The only reasonable position is skepticism, especially when "facts" from different sources are contradictory. The biggest problem is human ego. The average person is simply not all that smart, and the smart ones are often not as smart as they imagine they are. What really frustrates me is that so many people seem to believe "education" makes them smart. I dropped out of school before finishing the 8th grade, and as a result, "educated" people often summarily discount my reasoning, but a dumbass is a dumbass, and there are a lot of well educated dumbasses running around...
Fung actually doesnt say that carbs are that important. Fung is pro fasting, basically just eating fewer times a day is fine with him, give carbs or fats. He does talk about this in his book. Japanese would be fat if carbs would directly make you fat
Great video :) Summarizes how those who actually know shit may not be taken seriously because people want to be soothed with confidence rather than hearing facts. Particularly in relationships :P Women want to hear commitment, happily ever after etc. because otherwise "I don't feel safe" ;) That was pretty much joke, but I think the same phenomena stands in every field. Religion is another example. We don't fucking care that one doesn't add to another. We want to be soothed with eternal life and meaning to life etc. Cheers ;)
Bianca Yup thousands of them. And they're not even crazy people typing from the internet point of some mental hospital. They are fully sane and functional people with jobs, families and all that, and they are amongst us!!! It's scary and depressing I know 😕
proven facts based on evidence are not debatable or arguable. opinions, beliefs and dogma are and people like the agility of being able to argue "their take" vice having to accept a single fixed conclusion. in science this is all too common. throw in gray areas of inconclusive topics and you open the door to the prior....pissing matches.
This has that keto guy "dr" Eric Berg written all over it. A chiropractor giving medical and nutritional advice. Not a medical doctor, a registered dietitian or a scientist.and people will get extremely upset if you dare to question ANYTHING he says. Its def a cult. He just has an appealing personality and a very broad easy to grasp explanation to things.
Totally agree. He absolutely oversimplifies how our metabolism operates, to the point that he straight up lies to the whole world about our physiology. The whole keto community is clueless about biochemistry/bioenergetics. The keto community thinks you can eat 1000 grams of fat per day and lose body fat, "as long as your insulin levels are crazy low". 😂
Dr Berg does have some good advice on a lot of his videos and he seems very likeable, but some of the things he comes up with is nonsensical, which makes him look like a typical quack. Most people can't tell the difference so they think everything he says is true.
it is actually pretty simple, except when u try to make a plan for someone else. just use basics and figure it out yourself what is good and bad. and it needs time. the journey is not simple. but it is explained in a simple way
Subscribe this man everytime i watch ur videos i start to do sports, get happy, i mean enjoying the life, people who blame insulin, carbs etc. Dont really know how Thé body works, The body isnt that easy to get broken down , lets say u até 100 grams of white rice insulin is ur enemy then cuz u r gonna feel bad, hungry but lets say u go to Thé gym then insulin is ur friend instead of Caring about health Just go to Thé gym get ur protein, fiber, vitamin, minerals with an easy way then insulin is ur friend, life is ur friend
Funny, your talk reminds me of those anti vaxxers who somehow from their armchair and access to Google are suddenly experts in immunology and then I just happened to notice the date of your video. Wow. pre Covid no less.

Only half way though this video and it's already one of the best videos I've ever seen/heard. Thanks for this gem, Layne!
