I think this is one of the best fishing channels to learn how to fish, such as someone like myself, because he teaches with specifics! For instance, he demonstrates exactly how to work the pole's action. That may be obvious for fishermen that grew up with a dad or a brother that taught them the right techniques, unfortunately I was not that lucky, so I am 58 still trying to learn to fish and the more I get into it, the more my head spins. LOL. I need specifics, and he covers exactly what I need to do to at least fish with the right equipment the right way. Until this week, I've been fishing Ned rigs and jg heads pulling them through the water instead of bouncing them off the bottom. I know, sounds dumb to an experienced fisherman, but like I said I'm trying to learn and there is a lot to learn. Thank you sir, I'll be focusing on your videos going forward!

The Hula Grub was as dominant as the senko in its era. A local helped Roland Martin find good smallmouth in 1984 for a Bassmaster 100 Tournament on the CT River, out of Hartford, CT. It was a particular area north of where most guys fished, and it was totally smallmouth water. The Hula grub was the #1 bait used to catch all of the fish that us locals used there and Martin did as well, in winning that Bassmaster 100. The watermelon seed color worked best in that river system. We also rigged them on an open jig head, but used a ballhead in 1/4 oz. Nice video - its a reminder for me to dig them back out, now that the fish haven't seen so much of them lately! Works great around weeds too, but there I texas rig them on an EWG hook.

I can't believe how productive this bait is. You are right, they absolutely devour this thing....you can tell they are trying to EAT this....not just being aggressive towards it. Thanks for the tip...I've caught so many fish on this already!

Thanks Tyler. I have fished alot of hula grubs. I started fishing them Texas rigged with light weights and did great. My latest way is with a owner block head offset jig head. That jig is made for a Ned rig and stands up for a second or two when hopping on bottom. It isn't a deep water approach but down to 6' or so can't be beat.

Ty's nailed this one. The Hula Grub is and has been a fish catching machine. I've been using this for at least 25 years. And it seems to catch better quality smallmouth as well. In a tournament in my area of the country I have seen 20lb plus bags of smallmouth come to the scales on this exact setup. We don't have gobies. Didn't want to give away my age but whatever. I still fish like with the energy of a kid.

I fish Hula Grubs on 3/8 round ball finesse jigs all the time, I hit on a tip from the G-Man ( Swindell) and started cutting the colors Brown and Green apart, Then melting them back together to make Brown & Green combo Hula Grubs that really catches spotted bass like fire, They can't stand that color combo dragged on the bottom, try this setup, it works !!!!

I have been fishing Chompers hula grubs for many decades. I usually use a 3/4 oz chomper jig head to stir up the bottom a bit more. It seems to produce better for me using a side sweep pull and stop retrieve . If you hold the grub horizontally you will see the legs flare out one way and lay in when turned over the other way. I like to rig it where the legs flare out .

Hey Tyler the hula grub changed fishing forever I'm 56yrs old and in the past when I was younger I used to catch alot of smalmouth bass on them . Hey Tyler I just moved to Missouri this past summer so I'm still learning I've been catching bass on the pee wee football jig by jewel baits. But I don't have my boat yet . My buddy has a bass boat so I get out on the water . Thanks for the great videos excellent information God bless you and your family your pal fisherman Mike.

I fish this bait all the time. I can throw it anywhere, open deeper water, shallow water along the bank, pitch it around bushes and cover and catch fish on it. For me I have found the Zman Ned lock jig heads work great ! The thick metal on the hook shaft at the eye helps extend the life of the bait because they to tend to tear up easy.

I remember when I found out about this bait. I was out fishing years ago, flippin some downed timber in a cove. The lake was down some and their was a tree in the water. Since the water was a little low the tree had a few limbs that were out of the water that normally wouldn’t be. I spotted a square bill hanging from it so I went and got it. Got over to the tree and I saw this weird looking plastic. Never seen it before. Never heard of it or anything. I had no idea what it was lol all I knew was I needed some because it looked super saucy. Obviously it was a hula grub. It was pretty swelled up so I didn’t use it. Just tossed it in the trash later that day. But anyway, I ordered a pack that evening and 4 days later I was catching fish with them.
Great video man!! Good job!! 🤛🏻🤙🏼💪🏼👍🏼

I find it interesting that you fish the Hula Grub as a fitness bait. I've fished the 5" on a ¾ or 1 oz flat face football jig for 20 years. I plow the bottom with it until I hit a rock and then POP it off and hang on. Root Beer/ green & black flake is my magic. This bait works good on a swinghead with a medium bottom bouncing retrieve.

I think this translates to normal (no hula dress) twister tail grubs too, both single and double tail versions on a jig head. I say it because most of the action comes from the tail/s.

I use in creeks and small rivers on spinning gear. Usually lay downs in less than 5 feet of water. 1/8 ounce head with a wire weed guard, or I put them on formerly skirted jigs when I lose the skirt. Smallmouth love these, I also tried Carolina rig in rocky current areas but no success yet.

The only reason I don't use the Hula Grub is because I have so many plastics already! But we've had so much rain that I need something that will move more water when the turbidity is higher, so I think I'm going to need to make room for two more bags and I'll pair them with a tungsten head to get that different sound when the jig hits the rocks.

I'm gonna give this rig a try because I love finesse tactics. I'll use other tactics for catching bass but my bread and butter is finesse.
I caught my pb largemouth bass with a weightless wacky rig senko on a one ought octopus hook. The senko was a yum dinger, I use them because they are salted just right.
Recently I've been trying to use swim jigs for bass but I've been slaying catfish with it, like WTF!?

Guys I just caught a nice one this morning on this when nothing else would get a bite. Well wasn't this exactly. I take a finesse jig and trim the skirt and use a twin tail grub as a trailer. Looks almost identical but you get the advantage of the weed guard which was necessary for me this morning because it was in submerged tree top. They wouldn't bite a Texas rig or a plain jig with any other trailer. When I matched it up like he did with a green pumpkin twin tail It couldn't resist! Definitely gonna get me some of those and try them on a bald head jig tho.
