i am a sunni muslim and i love ali but i will never make dua to him. i only make dua to allah. and firmly beleive that muhammed(s.w.s) was the last and final messenger.
Dua has 2 meanings in the Quran- one is to is to supplicate to someone so that they answer your request knowing that only they possess the ability to answer. This is only allowed with respect to Allah (SWT). The second meaning of dua is to call another human being to help you. This is done knowing that they are a human being and have no independent power. Both of these duas are allowed in Islam and even encouraged. To call Imam Ali for help is of the 2nd type and is done with the belief that Allah allows him to hear the call, not that Imam Ali has any independent power. Though Imam Ali has been buried under the ground, he is alive in Barzakh and people in barzakh are able to hear the living. There are many Islamic proofs for this, both in Quran and hadith. The person in Barzakh is then able to supplicate on behalf of the caller and ask Allah to help that person.
Not all Muslims are aware of this system established by Islam, which is why they misunderstand it as shirk (polytheism).

أن عبادة الأنبياء والعلماء والأتقياء تشتمل على الخوف والرجاء ، ولا تخلو من محبة ، فمن يرد أن يعبد الله تعالى بإحدى هذه فقط و فاليراجع كلام الله وكلام نبيه ص الله عليه وسلم .
قال الله تعالى - في وصف حال المدعوين من الملائكة والأنبياء والصالحين - : ( أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ يَبْتَغُونَ إِلَى رَبِّهِمُ الْوَسِيلَةَ أَيُّهُمْ أَقْرَبُ وَيَرْجُونَ رَحْمَتَهُ وَيَخَافُونَ عَذَابَهُ ) الإسراء/ 57 .
