The “Scottish” is Mendelsohn’s greatest symphony-at least 50 years ahead of its time. No wonder he worked on it for 4 years. Not only cyclical, but all movements in sonata form. It had a huge influence on many composers such as Schumann. So in terms of advancing the form, more important than the Italian, which is deservedly popular.
Best orchestra in Germany! Amazing conductor! Phenomenal performance! Who doesn't want to be Scottish! I'm really crying this is an absolutely great performance. Thanks Andris! Kurt Masurt would be proud of you!
I stronly disagree! As much as I like this recording there are other orchestras in Germany that can easily perform it the same if not even better. (Just listen to Mariss Jansons and the Munich Radio Symphony Orchestra with the same Symphony - best IMHO! Also the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra could play this with the right conductor as Nelsons himself ...)
