I was born in Wolverhampton and grew up just outside it. It was a thriving and growing city in my childhood but I watched it decline rapidly in the early 2010s. Large numbers of businesses closed, including some of the banks (you know a place is in trouble when even the bank doesn't want to stay). It became one of the most desperate towns I've known and I lived in Middlesbrough for 5 years! I never felt unsafe in Middlesbrough but felt VERY unsafe in Wolverhampton on a number of occasions. For example; >I saw a gun pulled on someone in Whitmore Reans (district of Wolverhampton) one time, they took his phone, wallet and skateboard shoes, the gun was a webley revolver. Didn't know if it was real, didn't want to find out. >Someone tried to steal my car off my driveway in broad daylight but I caught them and chased them off with a garden hoe. >My weed dealer kept a 2 ft sword and bear mace by his front door because he so often got robbed. >A burglar jumped my fence into my garden one time followed moments later by 4 cops and a helicopter, they caught him hiding in a chicken coop. >A drink driver crashed into the front of my parents house at over 70mph totalling both their cars and demolishing a stone wall. He was thrown through the windscreen, he survived, locked the car and ran off. Cops found him on the swing set at the local park bleeding and crying. >2 years later I saw the same guy get into his car after about 8 pints and crash it into a bus; learned nothing. >A man was executed (shot in the head) on a rural road about a mile from my house, they left his body in a ditch on the side of the road. His name was "Kevin Nunes" >My cousin (also from Wolverhampton) went to prison for being involved in a "gang related stabbing". >Audi, BMW and Mercedes cars were CONSTANTLY getting stolen; found an Audi R8 on fire in a field once having been ditched by thieves, reported it to the cops and had to give a statement. Only part recognisable after the fire was put out was the wire frames of the seats. There were good things too though; >Some people were friendly, interestingly the poorer people were nicest. >Every year the "punks" and the "chavs" would set aside their differences for one day and do amateur bare knuckle boxing in the park, everyone would get along and drink together and there was a great sense of community spirit, it was called "punk fights". Afterwards they'd go straight back to hating each other. >The accent is endlessly amusing. Wish I never lost it. >Nice beer! >Car culture there is awesome with meets and cruises. >Some of the bars and nightlife used to be great, spent many a drunken near years eves in the city centre. >Where I grew up (a rural village 7 miles from the city centre) was like the village from hot fuzz, only with (slightly) less murder, so I had a good childhood exploring the forests and working on farms etc. It was an alright town but neglected by the government and not doing too great when I left. I've lived in places all over Europe and for me, Wolves has and always will have a very special place in my life. I speak to people all the time about their thoughts and overwhelmingly it seems that the main draw to the city is the location, right near the countryside but close enough to Birmingham to consider it local. 2 hours to London and less than that to the nearest beach (you can see why Americans love it here). Yeah the city has its problems for sure just like anywhere, but Wolves has a lot of up and coming prospects that many are excited to see!

I lived in wolves from 1989-92 and absolutely LOVED the place. I was at poly there which in my final year became a uni. I lived in Whitmore Reans for 2 years. The people are wonderful down to earth people. It is where I first tried a curry patty, from the Lomas St chippy just behind the ‘new’ adsa, which are amazing. Great town centre and amazing outside market. The beer which holds a special place in my heart is Banks’s Bitter, what an amazing pint! Well at least it was in the early 90s not had it for a while. If there was a place I’d move to it would be Wolves! Happy memories! Yowright! Love it!
Guy who lived in “38 places and Wolverhampton is in the top 2”! I can’t even begin to imagine what the 36 places worse than Wolverhampton are?! The cold dark surface of Pluto would possibly be one of them!
Around Penn area it’s good, other places like Bilston, Park hill, Heath town and fillings park are not that great. Litter every where and druggies roaming around..
I moved from the coast to bilston 3 years ago, big big mistake, what a dump... It's like going back to the 1970s, the mentality of the people here, they happily live in their own filth and don't want to change
Yeah I can agree with Bilston. Used to go over to see my girlfriend at the time and each time I went over I encountered something to put me off going. People are so much nicer over in Wednesfield.
Some of my best girlfriends were from Wolverhampton, hated the place when I moved there but 8 years later I hated to move away, still think about the place and always enjoy going on u tube to see Wolverhampton related uploads just to see the place also log on to the express and star… and the football team is doing well
I am here because there is a site that scores Wolverhampton #1 place to live in the UK! .. first in safety, first in friendliness, first in area upkeep. first overall. (was provident personal credit site) I just was curious seemed a dream town
What's this site called? Wolverhampton is a horrible place to live and it's not safe either that's mostly because the police couldn't give a shit! And as for people being friendly, you must be joking! The people are bigoted and small minded aggressive and nasty.
I'm with the guy who said that West Park is a nice place to visit, I liked to chill there, mostly when I first came to Wolverhampton which reminds me that I should go there again soon.
@@rmg5111 And rapists, if you're a female on her own, men stalk you especially at night in or out of the park, they follow you if you walk down Park Road and about two years ago, a young girl was murdered and raped in that very park, I myself have been stalked by weird men so I avoid the place if I can, not safe for women but it is a quiet street and my parents friend moved from Kingsland Road he'd had enough and in the Express and Star paper it said the Kingsland Road area and Leicester Square area was rated one of the poorest roughest places and they say Wolverhampton is nice!! It was also a pick up place for prostitutes and residents complained and there were police warnings, this is the area I was bought up in sheesh!! 😕
Are you kidding! Victoria Sokolova was murdered and raped in 2018 in West Park ,and you think it's a nice place are you sick in the head? It's a mausoleum that should be shut out of respect. They should of at least put a remembrance statue up the council couldn't even be bothered to do that!
My great grandparents were from Wolverhampton UK!! They came to America (New York I think) when they were 18 years old or so! I’ve been to the UK twice! But, just London mostly. I don’t think i’ve ever been to Wolverhampton, but it looks very nice!! 😊
Im american and lived in the West Midlands. It’s really nice in that part of the country. I’ve only been to Wolverhampton a couple times but it’s pretty nice out there.
I feel wolves has a lot of potential if it was invested into and done up nicely! Wolves was one of the places we looked at to live but after a visit we found it dead as fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wolverhampton is a great place to live. There's good transport links to Birmingham, London, Manchester etc. The Mander Center needs improving but you can always catch a train to Birmingham which has loads of great places to see and do. Merry Hill and Telford are also near by. The city also has some nice leafy suburbs, a good hospital, there's some excellent schools as well. West Park is absolutely lovely and obviously there's Wolverhampton Wanderers. Hopefully it will improve further. Fingers crossed!
Hey John! I asked a lot of people of different backgrounds but not everyone says yes of course. Check out the first episode and others if you'd like to see a bit more diversity! - Jake
@@SimplyStreetEnglish Jake, thanks for your swift response. I wasn't trying to make a judgement, just thought it a little surprising that no BAME'S were interviewed, but appreciate your reasoning for this. I did enjoy your interviews however. Take care John.
@@moniopia9551 Hey Moni! Thanks for the comment :) My 'excuse' (let's call it a reason eh?) as mentioned to John ^ was that not everyone I approach wants to be interviewed. @John Samuels Your comment is discrimitory. Maybe there weren't any brown people (my kids are brown and my best mate is Asian) to interview at the time. Why do people like you always pop up somewhere bleating about race? I grew up in Wolverhampton and attended a secondary school with a 19% white British pupils and that was in the 1990's. Back then there wasn't much discrimination in school and you may find it hard to believe with your big chip on your shoulder but the main terms used were Gora/Goree or Honkee
Born in Wolverhampton in 1937,WAS a lovely place till about 1960,recently visited,What a dump,Beatrice's boarded up,streets filthy Whoever over the years on the council, has neglected it ,Queen Square was like a township,Totally disgracr
Wolverhampton is great if you walk around looking upwards. The buildings and architecture are amazing but unfortunately it's let down by the number of closed shops. It's great if you want to pawn in your childs xbox, go and place a few bets at the bookies then spend your winnings at the pound shop but other than that there's nothing anymore. It's a real shame. Looks like the remainder of the shops are being killed off by the pedestrianisation as well, all I can put it down to is the councils trying for a city based on nightlife etc... as opposed to shopping etc... might be completely wrong but we'll see....
I was born in Wolverhampton, left as a small child in 1970, sadly never been back, my grandparents house is still the same,( checked google eart) the address was 194 marsh lane, anyone live in marsh lane , I remember fireworks night and falling over on the snowy footpaths, I have relatives but they never communicate, my mums surname was EDGE. MAYBE ILL get back before I pass away eeehhhh,
Hello Pedro! I'm from Wolverhampton, it's cheap yes but Cambridge is much more beautiful. I would recommend ARU for that reason. Have a look at some more of our recent videos for a little look at Cambridge, you'll see what I mean :) Jake
It's an area of England that used to produce lots of smoke from the factories in history. There's a particular accent that goes with it too! Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/ZBzy32Uiikc/v-deo.html This lady at 9:10 has the accent and explains some of the areas of the Black Country. Hope that helps :)
Miss this place badly the queen square, Wolverhampton university the place where I have done my studies, kebab early in the nights Oceana pub still pretty more things I miss
I was born in Wolverhampton, but I live near the beach, I love the beach, ( where do you live) I live in ADELAIDE , SOUTH AUSTRALIA, ( that’s a very long way) yes a lot farther than Southampton. Eeeeeeehhhhhhhh
Parts of Wolverhampton have been ruined with the reset and pedestrianisation a lot of small businesses have closed down. There are plusses the accessibility is good to travel and the banks and some stores are good. However, where the market used to be and that end of town is a ghost town sad to see. Its got good multiculturalism generally a nice place to live with clean suburbs and canals and nearby countryside
I am Born and Bred in this City!, You now see Blue Jacketed Wolverhampton ambassadors walking around with "Were here to Help!", Printed on their Coats etc, but they seem very Clicky & a bit Edgy when approached!.
Moved to the area when I was 5 years old due to family issues, always loathed Wolverhampton, I worked in Newark, NJ which was equally as eventful but being 20 mins from NYC maybe so? I moved to China in 2015 and when I find myself back to see family I absolutely die inside when I have to be back in its vicinity.
I was born and bred here. The problem isn't so much the town, it's the people. They're horrid to be around, and so ignorant it's breathtaking! The only people I speak to usually come from different countries they seem to be less bigoted and judgemental.
I live in W,ton, it's fine.....though it was better in the 1960s/70s. Years ago l could walk down Dudley street: look in burtons, which 30 years ago had good clothes....also foster menswear, C&A, Woolworths, littlewoods, BHS, etc.....all those stores are now gone. And dudley street is a shadow of its former self. There will always be unsavoury people in EVERY city/town, but l have noticed over the last decade or more: there seems to be more....and sorry to be judgemental: yobby types about, and people who reek of cannabis, and f and blind in the city centre, and people having arguments everywhere, also people walking around with beer cans in their hand, and beggars asking for spare change. The mander centre has lost the character it had in the 70s......the main gallery used to have phone boxes, large sculptures, and plants etc. Now it's like an empty aircraft hanger. Times have changed country wide, not just W,ton.......and not for the best. It's people who make a town and city......and the way they behave. Manners, and behaving appropriately seems to be a thing of the past......l have seen many parents in the city centre: f..ing, and blinding at their young children......is it any wonder that morals are in the gutter here, and country wide.....some unfortunately don,t want to make the effort, and that's the top and bottom of it.
Wolverhampton gets a bad rap. Sure, it's not the best place in the world, but it has a fair few things going for it and it's a hell of a lot better than many other towns in the UK. If you think Wolverhampton is a shit hole, try going to Runcorn or Scunthorpe!
It's horrible! haha I've lived in Wolverhampton my whole life and I've watched it go down the drain. Sad as i used to stick up for the city but now i cant wait to move away... far, far away!
I’m born and bred In Wolverhampton, loved it as I was growing up ,but let’s get things right ,first never a city always be a town ,was a good town years ago ,but now the town is dead a lot of the shops are shut ,the best shop we had as long gone now beatties, the grand theatre is still nice ,but the hotel next door is full of immigrants,I like the way you only interview in some decent streets ,why don’t you say it as it is and show all the empty shops around ,if I had the monies I would move but unfortunately I don’t ,think it should be called wolverhamptonstad
@@SimplyStreetEnglish when I say job I'm talking about a job just to help pay rent and all that. Like a part time at a restaurant, supermarket... that kinda of mcdonalds job you will! Do you reckon that it's easy to get a job of that sort in Wolverhampton?
Competition is high for jobs. Job opportunities aren't great, as in choice and distance to travel. A lot of jobs are outside wolves. Areas such as Telford and even Birmingham or thrown in to make up the job opportunities. Yes you can find something but it will take a while.
Wolverhampton Wanderers, Wolves Speedway, horse racing, greyhound racing, Bank's ales, The Grand Theatre, The Lighthouse Media Centre, The Art Gallery, West Park, East Park, Bantock Park, Moseley Old Hall, Wightwick Manor, Tettenhall pool...and plenty more besides.
Birmingham and most of the west midlands is like that.
Tettenhall, Finchfield, Compton and Perton are really nice
apart from the recent teenage gang stabbings
Very fair reflection of somewhere I knew very well and miss alot.
That's bilston
U went to Bilston...lol
@@amosand7476 I caught my lesbian neighbour sucking off her brother in law on someone's doorstep... they are a different breed
boeingbwoy 😱did u tell them
Some of my best girlfriends were from Wolverhampton, hated the place when I moved there but 8 years later I hated to move away, still think about the place and always enjoy going on u tube to see Wolverhampton related uploads just to see the place also log on to the express and star… and the football team is doing well
My hometown. People down to earth and genuine. 💜
Not in my experience.
You must be joking 🤣
Specsavers customer??
I am here because there is a site that scores Wolverhampton #1 place to live in the UK! .. first in safety, first in friendliness, first in area upkeep. first overall. (was provident personal credit site) I just was curious seemed a dream town
What's this site called? Wolverhampton is a horrible place to live and it's not safe either that's mostly because the police couldn't give a shit!
And as for people being friendly, you must be joking! The people are bigoted and small minded aggressive and nasty.
Man what site was that hahaha, who does these servas
Surveys
What?? I've seen it listed as 5th worst place to live in the UK
@@simonh6371 seems that the site did the survey had some real estate that needed to move. :)
My word, if these were the better interviews I can only imagine what the ones they left out are like.
Love the bloke from Boreham Wood.
About 5% of people living in Wolverhampton are actually from there. The rest are... use your imagination.
I'm with the guy who said that West Park is a nice place to visit, I liked to chill there, mostly when I first came to Wolverhampton which reminds me that I should go there again soon.
Enjoy! Used to go in the little boats in the summer, not sure if they still do it anymore
It’s a shit park full of weirdos and crackheads
My family's been here for at least 400 years so yes I love living here it is home
No born and bred in wolvo, and in the last twenty years, it's turned into a sithole. But then again, I'll be castigated for being honest.
I feel wolves has a lot of potential if it was invested into and done up nicely! Wolves was one of the places we looked at to live but after a visit we found it dead as fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The people are horrible!
New subscriber! I love the channel and its content. The best way to improve English and have a good time.😊
Welcome aboard! Glad you enjoy :)
The lad from boremwood. I’m pretty close by lol and was planning on moving down there too
I miss West Park and that is it. Too much crime now
Thanks for a great video! Top man 💪
Wolverhampton is a great place to live.
Wolves is a great place but you then say you can always get a train to brum for shopping and merry hill ,hahaha
I lived in Wolverhampton for 31 years, totally surprised that your man didn't interview one Asian or Afro-Carribean person 🤔
Me to but not that long lol

I've had some great nights in Wolverhampton with my friends through the years
Wolves is a good city centre, far worse areas like Walsall and Birmingham 😊..
Born in Wolverhampton in 1937,WAS a lovely place till about 1960,recently visited,What a dump,Beatrice's boarded up,streets filthy Whoever over the years on the council, has neglected it ,Queen Square was like a township,Totally disgracr
The heart has been torn out of the place and people are really rude!
I love living in wolverhampton x
Wolverhampton is great if you walk around looking upwards. The buildings and architecture are amazing but unfortunately it's let down by the number of closed shops. It's great if you want to pawn in your childs xbox, go and place a few bets at the bookies then spend your winnings at the pound shop but other than that there's nothing anymore. It's a real shame. Looks like the remainder of the shops are being killed off by the pedestrianisation as well, all I can put it down to is the councils trying for a city based on nightlife etc... as opposed to shopping etc... might be completely wrong but we'll see....
excellent video! great interviewing and listening skills and some interesting folks for sure :)
Nice place.. Wolverhampton in my memory
MAYBE ILL get back before I pass away eeehhhh,
I thorn between going to Wolverhampton university or ARU in Cambridge can anyone help me out? Never been to the UK, I'm from PORTUGAL
Hello Pedro! I'm from Wolverhampton, it's cheap yes but Cambridge is much more beautiful. I would recommend ARU for that reason.
Have a look at some more of our recent videos for a little look at Cambridge, you'll see what I mean :) Jake
@@SimplyStreetEnglish Yeah I believe you! But Cambridge is a expensive city, Wolverhampton might be cheaper for a student
True, you'll be able to visit Cambridge though I imagine!
Don't go to Wolverhampton uni, I've heard bad stories about it!! 🙁

Why did an interviewee call the region "Black Country" @5:07? Thank you.

The towns industrial heritage mate. Do your homework.
Like the council all too eager to label it as, Wolvo has never been in the Black Country.
My wife's from Wolverhampton she moved here to Scotland to get away from the area she was from. Shes been here 13 years

I am Born and Bred in this City!,
You now see Blue Jacketed Wolverhampton ambassadors walking around with "Were here to Help!", Printed on their Coats etc, but they seem very Clicky & a bit Edgy when approached!.
I've never bothered with them, I don't see the point.
"I like West Park."
He better mean in the day. Because we know what happens at night at West Park. It ain't pretty.
"nice place" ppl get stabbed behind newcross and then striker gets burned down ay we nice ppl
I miss my home Wolverhampton
Why doe you come back andy? You aren't a million miles away.. hope you're well mate regards Jeffrey
Lived in wolverhampton all my life live it
I live in W,ton, it's fine.....though it was better in the 1960s/70s.
Good job I wasn't there if I was interviewed in this I would have told the truth.
What would you have said?
Y ancestors lived in that city since Elizabethan times
Wolverhampton looks nice
Now in the 6% most deprived areas of the country. Buy a house for 60k. I'd never go back.
Wolverhampton gets a bad rap. Sure, it's not the best place in the world, but it has a fair few things going for it and it's a hell of a lot better than many other towns in the UK. If you think Wolverhampton is a shit hole, try going to Runcorn or Scunthorpe!
It’s a dump lived there 25yrs would never go back

I’m born and bred In Wolverhampton, loved it as I was growing up ,but let’s get things right ,first never a city always be a town ,was a good town years ago ,but now the town is dead a lot of the shops are shut ,the best shop we had as long gone now beatties, the grand theatre is still nice ,but the hotel next door is full of immigrants,I like the way you only interview in some decent streets ,why don’t you say it as it is and show all the empty shops around ,if I had the monies I would move but unfortunately I don’t ,think it should be called wolverhamptonstad
Do you think that is easy to find a job in Wolverhampton? And is it a cheap city for students?
Depends on the job! Definitely cheap to rent there though.
@@SimplyStreetEnglish when I say job I'm talking about a job just to help pay rent and all that. Like a part time at a restaurant, supermarket... that kinda of mcdonalds job you will! Do you reckon that it's easy to get a job of that sort in Wolverhampton?
Yes, I think you should be able to find something. Supermarkets always seem to be hiring!
@Sam Kay you think so ? Even at these usual "easier to get" jobs? Like fast food chains and things like that?
Competition is high for jobs. Job opportunities aren't great, as in choice and distance to travel. A lot of jobs are outside wolves. Areas such as Telford and even Birmingham or thrown in to make up the job opportunities. Yes you can find something but it will take a while.
