Patience has been the name of the game this year for me. Saved until the end of Feb and picked up a Koufax RC. Then saved another month and got a 54 Ted. Next month was a 51 Feller. Since I've been saving for a Jackie. I've picked up a fewer smaller things along the way. I could have picked up a lesser grade Jackie last night far below my budget, but it was very off center and part of the team logo was cut off. wasn't worth it to me, even to save $100. SO patience in getting the card you want at the price you want is so so worth it.

Patience only works well for readily available items. When you begin getting into extremely rare collectibles, it's much harder to consider patience when you might not ever see another copy.

I have the patience, for items that I'm likely to see again; but for rare/unique items, the question I grapple with is: do I have the will-power to stop myself from bidding in excess of my 'maximum' bid?'

The reason i love this card is it is the last iconic base card in the hobby. We will never see a base card become so sought out like this again because parallels have become the norm in the past 10 years. This is equivalent to the 1980 Topps Henderson as that is the last iconic standalone rookie before Fleer and Donruss entered the market in 1981. I know people are down on Trout because of injuries but Griffey went through the same trajectory after he was traded to the Reds. Once Trout retires and we all take a step back after a few years and forget the injuries, we’ll realize how great his prime was.
It’s funny you mentioned you’re shifting to bigger cards this year as i’m doing the opposite this year. 2022 and 2023, i was in the phase of getting the bigger iconic cards. I bought the 2011 Topps Update Trout PSA 9 in the summer of 2022. Now i’m in that $25 card phase as i love buying quantity over quality right now. I’ll switch back sometime as that’s the fun of the hobby.

  • @rschreck97

I’m glad you found a card you were after at a great price! You touched on one of my big things that determines patience which is abundance. If it’s a high numbered parallel of a young star which the rookie came out the last couple years then I wait. I want to get into J Rod but not yet. His gold was $200ish pre season and I’ve seen a few sub $100 sales recently. I’m still going to wait, but because I found something I couldn’t be patient with. The right rare card (especially if the price is right and can be squeezed into the budget) I think is worth not being patient with. I missed out on a raw version of the card I was after a few months ago but an 8 came up for sale listed at my top bid for the auction I missed out on. The raw one probably graded a ten but I bought the 8 because there’s a very limited supply and I could make it work. Card is paid for but not in hand (seller dragging their feet hard which is frustrating) but I’m excited to share online once it gets here (hopefully it does).

Our journeys are mirroring each other's. I used to love dumpster diving, cards under 10$, usually a couple dollars. I've slowly transitioned to larger cards. Means way less mail days, but they mean a lot more. I still go down rabbit holes and pick up stuff on the cheap. But for the most part I'd rather save and get something more meaningful. 👍 God video/message.

Congratulations on getting a Trout rookie card. I hope that he comes back to play this season. He was crushing the ball in April.
Fortunately I picked up two of his rookie cards in a PSA 10 back in early 2019. I bought two in the hopes that one day I would sell one of them to cover the cost of my purchase of $700 each. At the time in April of 2020 reluctantly sold one for $2,800. Not sad now.

If Trout stays on this same "injured often" trajectory over the next 3-4 years, then I'll buy. By then, I think his base 9 will be sub $200 and a Gold Parallel will be cheap enough to consider as well. Like Chris Olivo said in the comments, Trout is on his 30's Griffey trajectory right now and Griffey was not very popular in the mid 2000's.

Big “it depends”. If it’s been burned into the back of your brain, you have the budget, and you want to be the end collector for that card then it’s probably a buy. Depends on the card and the player situation as well, could be a rare parallel or if there could be a catalyst for more price movement I would lean towards yes as well. I did a deep dive on iconic modern PSA 9’s and 10’s of retired or future Hall of Famers (1990-present). I went through Kobe, Brady, Lebron, Crosby, Curry, Trout, etc rookies. The PSA 9 and 10 (and even the 8) pretty much rose and fell at the same rate. I used to believe that the PSA 10’s would hold their value over the long term compared to the PSA 9 and the numbers just don’t back it up. In fact, the PSA 10 sometimes had the bigger drop because the price was inflated being 3-4x more than a 9.
