Please let me know if I covered everything in the realm of this drama fully. My goal is to potentially squash the drama entirely and use this video as a reference for if it happens in the future. Though obviously knowing how furry drama goes it's bound to happen again. Regardless, any feedback is greatly appreciated!

"Don't ruin the magic" Don't forget that not too long ago, there was that whole drama where a mute fursuiter stumbled into a person at the rave at a con, and something in their costume poked the other person, and rather than stay and tell them it wasn't a needle, we got a whole freaking weekend of "SOMEONE IS STABBING SUITERS WITH NEEDLES". The whole damn thing could have been avoided it that suiter had broken the magic.

I think that mentality of "keep the magic" is for a mascot. If you went to Disneyland and saw Mickey Mouse, sure that's amazing. But if he took off his head then that would break the magic. It was one of the rules in the park. It was always for the kids in the park so they would have a good time. I think this mentality was designed with others in mind not the person in costume.

That and furries use to be more about holding the magic in the past but have started to switch to being more reasonable. If I'm overheating and can't make it to the headless lounge or my hotel room, I'm taking the head off

and even then there's a Limit to that, we're still fairly vulnerable and heatstroke is still a thing that exists, all this stuff just like at work should be done safely.
if someone even says "I didn't die, therefore you should do the same", I'm probably not gonna listen to that guy.. there's a couple red flags going on there, first is their priority and second, there's definitely some survivorship bias going on there and I'm not one to tempt fate in the case that I were someone more vulnerable to heat or breathing or some other health problems/complications, that could send me to the hospital or worse, just for some idiot who has a big head and bigger ego than their fursuit.

I really need to go back into the fray and research this aspect of the fandom again. There appears to be a new rise of entitlement towards suiting in particular. My data needs to be pristine. Honestly, the whole hating on poodling debate ONLY has any traction when talking about mascot costumes. As in, most of these rules do actually apply when you play as a character as a job or something like that. But when it’s for a personal hobby, you can do whatever you want because it’s for yourself and not (usually) for anyone else.

Yeah like at Disneyland you could say it's bad for a mascot to take their head off out of nowhere in the middle of a crowd. But acting like furries have to abide by the same dress code is ridiculous. The actors in mascot costumes get paid to be sweaty and hot, you do not. You don't have to subject yourself to an uncomfortable experience just because some people think it's a furry carnal sin to poodle!

The person who described the "con death walk" really irked me, like just because they thought they couldn't poodle or didn't want to, that doesn't make other people cowards for actually wanting to have fun at a con and not having to constantly think "GOD I CANT WAIT UNTIL I CAN GET THIS THING OFF" or putting your face into a fan every time you encounter a headless lounge because you're so uncomfortable.

As a better comparison, suiting is more like wearing a halloween costume than being a character actor. The public is not entering a space expecting you to be x character like at a theater or disneyland. You just so happen to be wearing that costume for your own enjoyment and there coincidentally happen to be public onlookers. The only one you're in "social contract" to is yourself, and if that necessitates taking a break and "breaking the magic", then so be it.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber Рік тому +9

I'd say it's somewhere in between wearing a halloween costume and character acting, but not in a way that affects your argument. If you have to de-suit you have to de-suit.
And amusement parks get away with not "breaking the magic" by having multiple out-of-the-way places for character actors to de-suit. If you're at a convention you have the option of the Headless Lounge (though it's not always convenient) but if you're just out in public (or at a convention but you're too far away from the lounge) you don't have that luxury. So do what you need to do to stay safe and healthy.

Due to the nature of the furry fandom being heavily about creativity and artistry, I feel that anything that allows more expression is, generally, a good thing. So therefore, whether it be due to resources, health, comfort, or any other reason (or no reason at all!), if you want to poodle, feel free to do so! I've started going to IRL meets again after nearly a 10 year break, and the mood is so much more relaxed. Back then the group organisers were absolutely in the "don't break the magic" camp and would make anyone suiting change in the toilets or a side room somewhere, and would actually threaten to ban people for removing parts of their fursuits in public or wearing partials/poodling. Nowdays everyone just puts on their suits in the open, walks around headless when needed, nobody cares and it's a much better mood all around.

I just went to my second one this year, it was my second time suiting in public and as someone out of shape it was really difficult to wear my suit for extended periods of time. Even though it was a partial, it still made things difficult for me, because learning how to breathe while being in a stuffy fursuit head for hours isn't something I'm used to. But I had to take a lot of breaks, where I'd settle down against a wall in one of the hallways or in the corner of dealers' den and had to take off my partial. And when i'd do it I caught a lot of people giving me that 'side-eye' kind of look. I was really proud of myself when I did the parade, my first one. I had to really push myself and I'm ngl by the end I think I was verging on heat exhaustion, but man, I shouldn't have to feel anxious just for taking care of myself. Y'know? Anyway it was always the biggest attendee complaint, so I raised the idea of removing the rule in a staff idea jam. I was stunned when the whole security team and a bunch of other teams threatened to resign if the rule was removed, and that as staff I had to enforce the rules "whether I liked it or not". I apologised, said I couldn't bring myself to tell someone how to fursuit when we weren't paying them to do it, and asked why the people resigning felt the way they did (to try and find a compromise). Con fired me, and handed me a 2-year ban for "threatening the safe running of the event". It was wild. I still have all the emails and Telegram messages.

YOU, as the fursuiter, are the only person who gets to decide whether you want to be in character while wearing your fursuit, and for how long. The public seriously doesn't give a shit.

Another point to being to the table is I feel like people who care about “breaking the magic” also fail to understand that fursuiting is not for those who look upon fursuiters. Fursuiting is meant for the suiters in question. Yea there are those who fursuit in part to act for those who look upon them, but not everyone is obligated to do that. It’s the same argument for respecting a suiter’s well being/personal space; they aren’t there for you, they are there because they want to have a good and fun time in their fursuit.

Tbh, as an artist who often designs anthro characters but doesn't consider himself a furry, I gotta ask...at what point is a character not considered a furry/costume not a fursuit?
Like what if you had a character that CANONICALLY didn't have fur covering their whole body, like say just the lower half of the legs + a tail and... I dunno, upper half of the head is a skull with fluffy ears sticking out, lower half is just shadow and could be portrayed via very thin, breathable black fabric. Then they legit canonically wear extremely breathable clothes, like a crop top and shorts
Would something like that not be allowed, if not then why?

As a child just learning about fursuiting. I didn’t like poodling or partial fursuiting because I didn’t see the point of not going all they way with the costume. Getting older and learning about what goes into fursuiting. I learned why it’s done and kind that full suiting is like almost a special thing because the whole thing is expensive and even with ice vests and fans it’s still warm and exhausting to do.
I now have three partials and no full suits. I am also one of the people who wants to push that it’s okay to wear a crop top when fur suiting. Like it’s what ever is comfortable for the fur suiter!
The only time it is comparable to an acting job is what the fursuiter is being paid.
I was paid to wear an anthro cow costume for a farm show. When I was ready for a break I was walked to the handicap bathroom to change and we hid the suit in a bag so the magic wasn’t broken.
Lol like why would I pay thousands of dollars for a costume, a hotel, and a convention pass to not have fun and be comfortable but to entertain other people for free? If I have to do that I’m getting a guitar case to drag with me and charging for photos 😂

~7:10 As a technician (in training) for live theater, I can confirm, Beta pretty much has the correct read here. Before I go on, and go into a bit more depth about the differences between acting and fursuiting, I want to put a quick TW for "breaking some of the magic of live theater," so you can't say I didn't warn you. Now that the TW is out of the way, a quick disclaimer, I don't have a fursuit myself (although I hope to get one someday), nor do I work in costumes or hair/makeup, so I don't claim to be an expert here, however, I work in lights, and have done ASM (Assistant Stage Manager) and run crew work before, so I know my way around backstage, enough to feel qualified to comment. With the TW and disclaimer done, I can now get on with it. Now, I'm pretty sure that costumes does their best to accommodate for the actor's comfort when making their costume, ie, using relatively light and breathable material, and rarely, if ever, the types of faux fur or other hot and heavy materials that (I believe) are more commonly used in fursuits. From what I understand, most costumes come out feeling like your average, everyday normal clothes, like the ones you probably have on reading this right now. Meanwhile, from what I understand, fursuits are hot, heavy, and don't feel a lot like normal clothes. Another point, fursuiters sometimes, if not often, suit for hours upon hours on end, with little to no break, while it's rare to see a live actor onstage for the entire show, and that's not even taking into account intermission. Typically, the most you'll ever do is two shows a day, with at least an hour in between runs, and, including a 15-20 minute intermission, most shows run from 2 1/2 to 3 hours, with time offstage for each of the actors built in to the script. Additionally, before a show even goes public, actors spend tens of hours practicing in the same controlled environment that they will be performing in. Have you ever gone to a play and felt that the theater was cold? That's on purpose, to help keep the actors cool, because, as a lighting tech in training, I can personally attest that it is HOT under the lights that we use. These aren't your little consumer-grade flashlights or flood lights here, these are professional-grade high intensity lights, each weighing in between 7.5 and 25 pounds, with the vast majority weighing in at 10 or 14 pounds, and each can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Meanwhile, fursuiters really only "practice" (here, I mean practice like a pianist practices playing the piano, not like a lawyer practices law) suiting at events, where the environment isn't able to be controlled. One last thing, actors are typically getting compensated for their time, either with money or instruction, and random strangers are coming out and actually paying to watch actors perform, while fursuiters are only being compensated with the enjoyment of suiting, and don't have random strangers coming to watch specifically them fursuit.
Edit: When working backstage, techs wear all black to hide in the darkness. Even during the summer, I typically go fully all black long sleeve/pants clothes, not unlike a full fursuit. This can get REALLY hot, especially as I live in a southern state on the east coast of the US, where summers are hot and humid, and part of my tech outfit includes an all black hoodie, so I understand both the "Don't break the magic" mentality (in my case, don't get spotted), and the "Poodling is better for staying cool when it is hot out" point of view.

    2) Actors are getting paid to maintain "professionalism" and showmanship wherever they perform, most fursuiters are not getting paid to do what they do.

I seen it where mentally challenged people have their day come true when they get to hug a full suiter. You just get a ton of attention. Theres some point that you might just want to be a fan yourself and enjoy seeing other furrys yourself not to mention enjoying your friends, its what are you there for?
