@@John_Doe643 Yes, because you hear commentaries from folks who weren't in The Anthology Series and these were folks who "missed" out on getting them. Also you see they like any other group worked very hard for theirs.
I first watched this on VHS in 1986 as a 6 year old. My introduction to The Beatles. I am watching it again at age 40. Still love it. And I agree with many here. Is the best Beatles doc in terms of being concise and true. It should be remastered and put out again.
@@tyronerodgers I agree- and I love the narration by Malcolm MacDowell - his voice is great. It's a brilliant production- just needs a little TLC to brighten it up!
I have a story about the Beatles. When I was a cop in Canada in 1979, one of the other older constables on my platoon had been with the Canadian Navy in the late 50s & early 60s. He told me that in 1961, his ship pulled into to Hamburg, Germany, and he went exploring the city. They went into this dingy club where the Beatles were playing. After their set, they had a beer with my buddy Ted, since he was one the few english speaking people in the club. He said they were a rough looking group with leather jackets, but their music was good, and you knew they were destined for greatness.
They are also singing Kansas City by The Late Jerry Lieber & Mike Stoller who were the first successful songwriting Duo in Music. Some other guy was also co written by them and Richard Barrett who worked with The Chantels, and The Three Degrees. He was a poor man's berry gordy and never went as far as he had hoped. He even worked with Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers.
I have this on DVD. I used to have it on VHS when I worked in a TV/Video rental store in the early 90s. I bought the video but tried for years to get it on DVD- I eventually managed it and it's one of my treasures! I would love it to be digitally restored and re-released- even though Peter Jackson's documentaries are just fantastic- this little gem needs a polish too!! I didn't know Paul McCartney isn't keen though...🤔
@@margaretrobertson3338 If you have it on DVD, it has to be a pirate of the Laserdisc. The publishing ban was in place by the time it came out. (I think.)
You know what's so eerie. August 16th was the day that Ringo Starr "Debuted" at The Cavern Club (According To Wiki). In 1969 it was the Day that The Jackson Five debuted as the "New" Act Diana Ross Discovered although she didn't. August 16th was the day Elvis Presley died, and it was the day Sarah Harding auditioned to be in Girls Aloud 40 Years to the day The Beatles debuted here. Sadly it was also the Date that Aretha Franklin died and they are all in some way "linked". Aretha did her Versions of Songs like Yesterday, Paul McCartney loved her Voice, Michael Jackson co owns The Beatles Catalogue and Diana Ross attended the Funeral of Florence Ballard in 1976 that Aretha's Father CL Franklin officiated.
A guy I worked with years ago told me he was in Germany when he saw the Beatles in Hamberg. He married a girl there he saw them didn't think of them then saw them again on Ed Sullivan in 1964 they watched and said mmm those kids from Germany still didn't think much of them then either
Who else remembers this as the ONLY doc of the Beatles? Still have the VHS.
In some ways it is superior to Anthology.
Me too. Watched it to death

Same here. Nearly have it memorized, somehow, after not having seen it in a decade at least.

Best of any of the Beatles docs.
It did leave out the failed Decca Records audition of 01/01/1962.

I own it on VHS and have a working player. I bought this in 1984 when my parents got their first player. I love it.
Fantastic documentary
I bought the VHS in 1989. I constantly watched it. I have no regrets for letting it go. Its a shame Paul McCartney won't release it on DVD.
I recorded the documentary off of PBS back in like '87 or '88.
