You are not alone! "Oh I will go outside and be done with this job in 20 minutes." Two hours later I am about halfway done. I live in SW Virginia so same type of weather and it is an energy sapper.
Jenny your hubby is a keeper!! He is a lot like mine… you can see it in his face that he loves you so much. He has his own job but will not let you work so hard, always helping the wife. I just enjoy watching your videos. I wish they were daily but I understand your busy with your business. The flower bed came out beautiful. I was glad you changed it around. Thank you
I admire your bravery with those beautiful caladiums; I can never bring myself to pull out plants that aren't entirely dead and end up limping them along until winter finally clears up space in my beds!
Oh, I felt like crying when I saw the caladium bulbs being discarded. I faithfully save mine and dry them to store for the next year. They were lovely. New planting looks great. I've never used Artemisia, I'll try looking for it in Arkansas.
The arrangement turned out nice! Those plants and the ones to come should be happy with all that compost. Great idea to do that! You and Jerry are so sweet together love to see that.

We got our first real snowstorm in MA yesterday, so let the long wait for winter to be over begin🤦♀ I am already jonesing for green plants, flowers and warm weather so here I am catching up on videos that I missed earlier this year because I was busy outside sweating in my own garden. Love watching you guys work together on a project!
We totally understand the need for new life in Garden in Season. I love my Garden to look the season as well. We have a very small greenhouse on our farm and grow a few plants to sell and also get some from our local grower. Plants just get tired looking after a certain time of year, especially annuals. Everything looks beautiful!
You almost killed me tearing out those beautiful caladiums. I'm in 5b, outside Chicago, so mine won't last as long. I have to enjoy them as long as possible. I had to laugh though. I do the very same thing when putting out plants. I set them out and stare at them for a bit to decide whether or not I like the layout. Inevitably I do change things around and stare at them some more before finally planting. 😄
I am in 6b and I always pull my caladiums and store the tubers in my basement for the winter. They come crack good as new the next year. I even grab some from Lowe’s clearance racks in late summer to stretch the gardening budget for next year.
Oh Jenny, I love your southern talk when talking about the heat and humidity. I'm in Georgia so we're neighbors. Also love the music. Reminds of the times I was able to sit down at the end of a long day in the yard with the kids, heating up the grill for a burger.
That soil acidifier sure does make the plants pop. I think a perennial shrub like the Storm Cloud Bluestar Amsonia would look great in the back of that bed.
I have the opposite type of soil as you (sandy), but I do love nicely amended soil. That'll be fun to work in in the coming years. I think I heard we'll get down to mid 40s tonight here in Minneapolis. Cold weather be damned! I planted some things today. I also picked up some decorative small pumpkins for my steps. (I know the squirrels will get to them.) 🐿️ Behind my three nepeta I planted a couple Celosia that look like graduated pink to fuchsia rockets. In front, I planted five of those tiny kale that grow on a tall stem. Nearby is a row of bubble gum petunias. It's so cute! Say, I have to share a funny story. A few weeks ago I had a mature maple tree removed. It made me nervous that the tree (planted long before I moved here 30 years ago) had two leaders. Last summer, we had a tornado (rated zero! Who ever heard of a category zero?) so I wanted it gone. It was close to the power lines. I asked the guys to cut me a couple sittin' on stumps. They left me the "crotch" of the tree. I flipped it over so it's one big seat for my fat fanny. Everytime I look at it now I laugh because it looks like someone is standing in the dirt.
So hard to pull out those summer annuals, but as soon as you do it's like ahhhhhh ... time for something new & exciting. Love the color and texture combo - and if it looks this good now just imagine in a couple of weeks - wowzer !!! Thanks for inspiring me to step up and into Autumn !!!! And how wonderful to see y'all working together as a team - you are blessed to have each other (and your family) and I am grateful you have chosen to share your blessings with all of us !!!! and I have to wonder, do you ever have things pop up in the Spring over in your compost pile - say, um, caladiums - hahaha !!!!
Ur pulling out plants thay look fabulous and mine out there laying in the ground looking a HOT MESS!!! Thank u for the incentive to get out and get it done!!!!
I keep putting off buying an auger, but you and Laura make it very difficult lol!! I'm in southeast Virginia, and I love planting pansies in the fall because nine times out of 10, they come back in the spring!
If anyone has not been in the south in summer, they don't know about our humidity. I don't think I have ever sweated as as this year. Thanks for another great video and answering my question on the Angelina's, they are beautiful.
I know how you feel, James. I'm in South Louisiana, so can definitely relate. We were blessed this morning with temperatures in the high 50's. We'll take it!
I love to watch you plant. You use the same body mechanics as I do, bending over the way orthopedic surgeons cringe at. It is the fastest way. Love your posts.
After all the hard work you two did I hope you are taking the time to enjoy your new patio before winter comes. In NE we also use pansies in the fall and spring. I had pansies one year from spring to fall, blue ones, that I replaced in the fall with fall colored ones 🙂! Love how the blossoms of pansies dance like little faces in a breeze 😊!
I planted pansies in September too this year, zone 8b Oregon. Blooms slow when we have a rare snow or like during last years ice storm but otherwise blooms nonstop until May or June.
Oh my gosh, that is SO me! It will only take me a minute I tell myself….4 hours later and near heat stroke 🥵…..Central Florida here. I love how sweet you two are, my sweet husband rescues me all the time too ❤️
As a “Northerner” now gardening here in South Carolina I enjoy learning from you what plants to plant and when to plant them :) I will start looking for my pansy’s
Great job Jennie! It’s amazing seeing that flower bed along the new stone path filling in. I think it needs some vertical focal points like maybe 3 junipers or arborvitaes evenly spaced along the middle to create a tiered effect… I remember when you planted the green giants and the cedars along the back for privacy in case they ever developed the land behind you. It’s amazing to think anyone would ever take down that beautiful forest. Anyway, I’m just enjoying a day off with a hot cup of coffee while waking up so I can get out there and do some yard work myself. Thanks for the inspiration my friend!
That whole garden looks beautiful!! I love the white as you look down the path. Great eye for your design!! That will give you days of enjoyment… eye candy in the garden!!❤️
Giggled with delight when your first layout was not up to your standards. Love the idea of going with the dark “mulch” to set the annual area off! Looks fantastic. Hot Stuff is such a sweetie!
Jerry always seems to be there at the prefect time! What a wonderful partner. Never tried the Kale, I can’t decide if I’m ready to remove my summer flowers. Sure doesn’t feel like fall in South Carolina.
Hi Jenny the area looks great love your you tube it gives me inspiration and I have learnt more about grading since I found your channel, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us all. Sending blessings to all your family 🙏👍💖🦋🐞⭐
🌻Good morning everyone. Your design skills are amazing, Jenny, and always end up looking as tho they’ve always been there. The gorgeous backdrop of the property is so pretty, albeit the southern climate you describe. You make it look so effortless. Have a safe and fun weekend everyone! 🤗🥰☕️🪴🍂
I’m definitely planting caladiums next year (I said that this year and it never happened), but I’m like you, yes you can lift and store … or plan b is easier, just get new ones 🤣 this area looks beautiful now, and you are SO not looking like a hot mess. Jerry is so sweet, I can see how much you adore each other. ❤️ so much easier watching others do the gardening, it always takes far longer than you anticipate 🤣
Thanks Jenny for the information about growing pansies in the south. I wondered if you would have time to enjoy them with winter approaching. Your videos are very inspiring and realistic! This is my first year planting annuals and I have enjoyed watching them grow so far. I will try planting pansies this fall (zone 8a).
When I lay out my plants .... I always walk several feet away from them, then turn around to see if I like where I placed them ... then I will move from side to side and revalidate that I like them ... I might do this several times ... it works for me ...My neighbors just shake their heads ... thinking that I am going a little over board .... but you got to do ... what you got to do ... and they always love the final result .... yours really turned out Pretty .... and lucky you with a Husband that is willing to help .... mine just sits and enjoys watching me work ... Grrr !!! ..... Hugs
Such a gorgeous path! If a wetter area, I wonder if it would be a good spot for some rain garden plants? Once established they won't need constant moisture.
I just leave my caladiums and they return every year. Waiting not so patiently for my Florida 8b area to start getting the pansies and petunias in so I can get planting! Very pretty area, cant wait to see it in a couple of weeks!
Good morning! When you first lined the artemisia in front, I said she won’t like that and I laughed out loud when you changed it. 😆. It looks great! But I will say when he tossed the caladiums I was like save the bulb! But I realize as a grower it’s probably not worth your time. It is so different here as compared to up home these annuals last a long time and it’s tough just to pull them when still blooming! I really don’t know how you work in this humidity. BUT it’s beautiful now! 74 for today. Jerry jumps in to help it means so much when you are hot and sweaty.😁. Enjoy this week!
You are not the only one who thinks a project won't take long and doesn't want to stop til it's done. Sometimes I'm so hot, sweaty, and exhausted that I can barely drag myself into the house. So happy for Fall as well and glad some plants just keep on going beautifully.
That new soil is looking so rich and gorgeous for your annual garden

Get a life! We know you're not really Jenny. Creep!
Agree, Caladiums have a bulb that can be lifted, cleaned, dried out and replanted next season. Maybe she was going to save them.

Well, here in Central FL, I never need to pull them, but if I were going to, I'd pot them up.
I just watch this video, awesome job. Planting is such hard work.

It is a very pretty bed no doubt. I feel like its more spring like at the moment, perhaps when the kale deepens it will color up. Great job.

We modern women don’t need a man to help us get stuff done… 💪💁♀️
