    liquids don’t expand when they freeze, every liquid besides water will actually become more dense as the particles are pushed into a tight sold structure, water forms bridges between the particles when it freezes, pushing them further out.

  • @tigress0076
    @tigress0076 Рік тому

    Ok some chemistry below:
    *Water* uniquely expands when frozen because of hydrogen bonding (a type a intermolecular force). This keeps bonds between molecules which ensures that molecules don't get as close as they usually do for other substances upon freezing. Hydrogen bonding creates an open lattice and a crystalline structure. It's also because of this hydrogen bonding and open lattice with gaps that makes ice (solid) less dense than the water (liquid) when usually it's the other way around - hence ice floats.

    This can actually be a problem in the winter for chicken owners. You have to pick eggs frequently to keep them from freezing. If they freeze in the coop, where they are exposed to poop and feathers and germs, throw it away it’s not worth risking food poisoning. Actually in our first year of raising chickens the hens stopped laying in the winter bc they weren’t getting enough sunlight (hens need several hours of light per day to lay eggs) and when they started laying again they laid in a corner of the coop that was hard to see unless you stuck your entire head in instead of the nesting boxes. (We did not have a walk-in coop at the time) the gals laid probably around ten eggs before a warm February day came and we seized the opportunity to clean the coop out (fact many people don’t realize: the poop freezes and it’s like trying to get off cement in the middle of winter) and we found their eggs. It was very exciting, except most were frozen and we had to throw them away.

    Actually, most liquid do not expect when they froze. In fact, most liquids lose volume as they freeze. This is because when you freeze a liquid, its molecules slow down. The more they slow down, the tighter the bonds are between them so they want more space . And it's not healthy to cook a frozen eggs
