Ageism is the last publicly unaddressed/challenged discrimination. Only one of a few recent personal examples is I was told I shouldn't foster anymore kids because I'm "getting on". I retaliated with "that's funny considering I'm good enough when just about everyone wants to dump their kids onto me so that they can go have fun"..they quickly shut-up...😠. All those kinda things in addition to this "in your face" issue (pardon the pun).

I'm 43yo, & if I can give you something to look forward to: I struggled with MAJORLY oily skin, until I was in my mid-30s. But it settled down & now it's fine (not too dry OR oily). Also, an unexpectedly nice side effect is that my skin has aged much more slowly than a lot of people my age, because all that extra oil has helped stave off the development of fine lines, wrinkles & dry, dull skin. So just hang in there! 😊

Same here. I don't take selfies, and if I take pics with friends on a night out or doing activities, I never use a filter and haven't for years. I stopped filters when I was on dating apps. I thought what am I doing? If I meet someone on this app, I'm going to look nothing like my pictures and of I meet someone I want it to be for the real me, not for a filtered me, only to find I'm not a filter in real life. It really changed how I view filters and also changed my view of myself. I do look after my skin, have a solid routine, use tretinoin, SPF and I do get Botox, from the years of not wearing glasses, I developed bad 11s from squinting, and I do get lip filler as one side of my lips is noticeably smaller than the other, I also have a longer nose so having my lips slightly plumper balances my nose out. I actually wear minimal make up now too. From 2017 to 2022 I was permanently make up free, now I just put BB cream on my nose to cover redness, then a bit of blush and just take my brows and that's it. And I only wear that on my office days or when I visit clients, because my job does require a level of looking out together

Jamie Lee Curtis is a shining example of what aging naturally looks like.
She wear her hair natural and wears makeup or no makeup like we all do.
More women in the public eye need to follow her example.

    • @linavasquez-comyns949
      @linavasquez-comyns949 5 місяців тому

Yes. You are right. And Jamie Lee Curtis was "HOT" in her younger years. And worked often. PLUS, she was/is "Hollywood royalty". But look at how little work she gets. She is practically irrelevant in current Hollywood. That is the problem!
As long as the patriarchy CONTROLS how successful a woman can become, AND how successful she can CONTINUE to be, women will pressure themselves and implicitly, other women to embrace the unrealistic, unattainable, and ridiculous DEMAND that women STOP aging. And the women that REFUSE to "drink the Kool-Aid" lose out.
Jamie Lee Curtis has a healthy net-worth. SHE can afford to give the middle finger to Hollywood's patriarchy. But she should NOT have to fade away. Older women, aging gracefully, should STILL be visible. Should still have movie roles that feature strong, older, vital female characters.
Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren, are examples of phenomenally talented women, that STILL get roles that older women in Hollywood NEVER had. BUT even Meryl Streep has had to compromise in ways that her (older) male peers do not. Helen Mirren is ballsy about speaking up. BUT I haven't seen her in movies lately. Maggie Gyllenhaal an extremely talented 37-year-old actress (Jake Gyllenhaal's sister) was told she was too OLD for the role of the male lead's "love interest". The male character was age 55!!!!!!!!! how fucked is that? But then I thought about it. It DOES make sense. Those men that have the POWER in Hollywood, are the same men who date/marry 23-year-old GIRLS!!! while they are in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. OF COURSE they wouldn't get a 37-year-old GF or wife.
It's insidious. The patriarchy must go.

I think that should be taught in high school when people are much more insecure but also while writing this, high school students today probably know more about filters and photoshop than I do!
But still, everything presented in the media (traditional or otherwise) is fake, filtered, augmented and manipulated to encourage sales of products. Even the old liquor ads with bikini clad women, set the tone that if you buy this liquor, these gorgeous women will appear out of thin air.

Seeing how amazing JLo (who is my age) looked made me feel terrible (and bitter for not having $$ for all the work) for so long- until I realized that even Getty images (or at least Jlo herself grabbing them) were filtered. I didn't think the paparazzi photos were retouched- but I didn't understand the collaborative, parasitic relationship that stars have with them (Jlo, Taylor, etc, not only tell photogs where to get 'candid' photos, they have APPROVAL of the photos that go to print). It really straddles a line between fantasy- which one is entitled to create- and deceit- creating a world that others accept but that is not real.

And she wears the most expensive wigs especially cut and coloured for her by a world famous hairdresser. She wears false eyelashes, she has pearly white tooth veneers, she has had a nose job, she has a great makeup artist, she uses flattering soft lighting, a good photographer. Etc. People need to understand that skin is an organ, it's alive. It reacts to stress, health issues, environment (inside and outside of your house), foods, self-hygiene, products, bacterias, summer allergies etc etc. So it's normal that your skin is having up and down days. Like mine, some days I will have clear normal skin for several weeks in a row and some days I will be on a oily side with a lil' of pimples, alot of textures and some redness going on.

I definitely like your recommendation to start following accounts that are normal and not just fitness influencers, actresses, makeup bloggers, etc. I have spoke with my therapist about how severely social media has (further) damaged my self-esteem, and she had a similar recommendation: to follow female influencers/personalities that are known for something OTHER than their appearance (ex. social justice, authors, prominent women in STEM, etc.). This has helped make a big difference for me to see something pop up in my feed that doesn't make me feel terrible about myself AND inspires me to value the right things in the world.

Especially comparing me to the older more mature skin women I love to watch who have experience and usually were or still are professional makeup artists . Their skin has no wrinkle insight while im starting to get lined under my eyes. I always have to reassure myself that in UA-cam videos the influencer usually is farther away from the camera as well. Which is ironic bc I think I look way better from afar then up
Close. Sometimes I’m too scared to get to close to the mirror so I stand back further so at least the illusion makes me feel pretty and good about myself. I’m terrified for my now 8 year old

I get it. But when you're 40, you'll think, "I was so silly when I was 30." And when you're 50, you'll think, "I was so silly when I was 40." It's an endless cycle. Just be happy in the skin that you're in. Easier said than done, I know, but faces have wrinkles and that's totally normal. It doesn't even mean that you're "old." I started going gray at 18. So did my brother. It's just genetic.
If you're interested in advice, my number one thing to tell you is DON'T TAN. You watch Cassandra, so you probably already know this, but I can't stress it enough. I didn't tan when I was younger because I couldn't. My two skin color options are either ghost or lobster...There is no in between. So I've been using 100 SPF my whole life. (No joke, I really use 100. LOL) But it was a blessing in disguise because I don't have a lot of wrinkles and I'm going to be 45 this year. But I have some and I get new ones every day and I'm OK with that. I'm supposed to have them. I started taking tretinoin to try to fight the "signs of aging" and my skin still looks pretty good, but one day it won't and that's OK. I was just hanging out with my 86 year old aunt last weekend and do you think she gives a F about wrinkles?! No way! 🤣 She's just living her life enjoying her time with her daughter and her granddaughter while she still has it. She would tell you that worrying about wrinkles is a total waste of time, and I agree.

I've never really had a problem with feeling bad because of celebrities, but I often feel bad, because my dad sees such photos and tells me I have acne (And I don't have a lot, only a few pimples here and there) because I don't wash my face enough or properly. Only now I found out it's natural to have some (especially during the menstrual cycle)! I was born with light yellow teeth, but to him I have yellow teeth because I don't know how to brush them. He also didn't allow me to use antiperspirant in summer, because I was sweating only because I didn't wash myself enough and I was using it to cover the smell. But he was using one! And I found out everybody sweats + I actually sweat more because of my dysautonomia, can't influence it no matter what I do. Washing myself twice or even once a day should be enough, unless I'm sporting, which I can't do anyway. Or that I don't wash my hair enough because it gets greasy quite soon after I wash it (my hair is almost above the knees, it's -again- normal for hair to do that. He didn't know it was harmful, but I felt so bad during puberty because of it. :// Never told anyone before today actually 🙈

It doesn't mean that I wasn't insecure about my spots/ redness but I think it just made it more subtle, took away the attention from it, i hoped at least lol.

I recently head from another creator on here in regards to the same topic, that we are rapidly heading to a society where people don’t have an issue with celeb or influencer photo manipulation and also don’t see an AI advertising a product as a problem, even if the AI is advertising a face product! People want to see beauty and perfection and don’t care if it’s real or not. This is all according to a study that the creator quoted but I honestly can’t recall atm.

There is also a world of difference between beautiful in photos and in person. The makeup must be completely different.

I’ve never used a filter. I’m scared to lol. I have pretty good self esteem and I’m scared that using filters would mess with that.

I feel the same. I know they don't look like this, but I do compare myself all the time and start spiraling. I get myself out of it quite fast, but I'm almost 40 years old. I know that I would have not done this in my twenties. I also started wearing less make up to stop hiding my natural self.

This is an eye opener, very important to discuss and spread the awareness not to trust what we see in media nowadays and to embrace our raw/natural human beauty not AI beauty because that is artificial not real.

You are right. I grew up thinking women didn't have body hair. My peach fuzz made me feel dirty and insecure. And that never went until I had laser. Now I see really hairy women showing themselves as if nothing was going on. I still hate it, but I think to myself: why didn't I see any of this as a teenager? It probably wouldn't have made much difference but who knows.

It's scary how most smartphones have filter on by default and if i didn't tinker with the settings i would've just thought that my skin was looking plumper that day. Then the face/body dysmorphia kicks in as i remove the filters.
So I now follow Dr. Dre's advice on pore reduction, and it 100% works!

I love enhancing the beauty of my environment, people and the world be it with applying makeup 💄 on my friends, planting flowers in the garden, picking up litter from the beach, taking care of my mum or helping people with problems. Grace life with adding your light to it 🌸
