- Update: The locomotive WILL pull all of the cars by itself in analog mode. I might not need to doublehead after all…
I absolutely love the Alton and Chicago Alton Limited and there are three options made by Rivarossi / AHM for the locomotive
2-8-2 Mikado
4-6-2 Light Pacific
4-6-2 Heavy Pacific
To me, the heavy Pacific looks the best, but I didn't have one of those for the longest time. I had a Mikado, but I didn't really like the way it looked, so I moved it on. I then picked up one of the light Pacifics, but I didn't really care for that and moved it on, as well. I then got a Broadway Limited (BLI) Paragon 3 light Pacific Chicago & Alton to pull my consist (I had to add a Go Pack! because, like all of these Paragon 3 Pacifics, they have horrible pickups). I like it ok, but I always wanted to find the heavy Pacific (at a reasonable price) and finally found the one that you'll view in this video. Now.. what do? It won't reliably pull the Alton Limited consist on its own since they have full interiors and probably will weigh too much for the heavy Pacific. It might do the straights, but probably won't do the curves. I'm thinking of double heading it with the BLI, but will it look ok? I'm just not sure..

I have a Riva NKP Berk which Riva supplied with the same tender...as a member of NKP Modelers, I can say that the Berk's pickup problems are in the tender; I cut a sheet of copper for the tender floor; after saying all that, I like the Riva's bulky, powerful look. The Alton has got to be a beautiful steam loco...thanks & good luck.
Yes, indeed. I’ve converted two in the past… they’re…. … cantankerous at times lol. I like the beefy look, too… Thanks tons for responding and watching! I’ll keep everyone updated!
Cool video! I’ve been interested in the Alton RR since spending two years visiting my girlfriends college in Bloomington, IL. They have a city museum where there is some artifacts from the railroad, which got me interested in doing research on the Alton. Turns out the they had their largest yard in Bloomington, which was subsequently taken over by the GM&O, later ICG. Currently it sits along the UP mainline, bulldozed and abandoned. The site is slated to be completely cleared of remnants and rubble for a new warehouse complex, so before that happened I wanted to explore what was left.
The site isn’t secured, and was pretty much open to walk into. We spent an hour exploring and trying to make out what was what, based on old maps of the facility. I found that the foundations of the turntable, transfer table, and car inspection/maintenance pits were still present, surrounded by large piles of bricks that used to make up their structures. Overall the site appears to have been left in its current state since the buildings were demolished decades ago, there was even some old construction equipment left amidst the rubble. On the way out I took a couple of bricks from some of the more notable facilities (roundhouse, car shop, etc) as well as some distinctive ones from the large smoke stack. Cool reminders of a railroad seemingly forgotten by most.
I hadn’t heard of the Alton until exploring that museum, and it’s a shame it’s memory isn’t carried on by many, nor it’s heritage remembered by its subsequent railroads. I hope manufacturers will continue to produce models depicting the Alton, as eventually id like to create some sort of display with the models and bricks saved from from the yard.
If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to share information or photos of the yard remnants with others so this chapter of railroading history isn’t forgotten. Let me know!

Oh, this is really wonderful information! Thank you so much for taking the time to discuss what you know about all of this!
I've been in Bloomington Indiana, but not Illinois.... I have a number of C&A passenger cars and I fell in love with the paint scheme when I was a kid, and loved it ever since. Question, was there some decent locomotive information at the museum? I've looking online, and there really wasn't much. I'm currently building a 1/8 scale heavy pacific coal fired, live steam. Having some trouble finding clear or moderately decent at least to see what all accessories and what was located where on it... air pumps, feedwater heater, etc... If the museum has a lot more in person than online, it might be worth my time to drive over from Pennsylvania as a research project. I am curious to hear your take on this.
@@kleetus92 cool story! I didn’t find out about the Alton until being down in Bloomington most weekends for two years visiting ISU.
As much i would suggest you to go visit, since it is a decent museum, I can’t in good faith suggest you make that drive for what you’re looking for. There isn’t too much specific information there about the railroad, let alone about the locomotives. It’s more focused on ‘the people’. My visit got me interested in the subject and I found more research information online.
@@fevinman7162 Thank you, that's really the information I was looking for. If I'm in the neighborhood I'll stop in, but it isn't likely worth a 2 day drive to walk around for an hour...
Nice. I actually bought one of these Alton Rivarossi's on Ebay just a couple weeks ago. Mine's a later one with the small flanges and motor in the boiler instead of sticking out of the cab. Paid $60 for it. Thought I did pretty good on it. Lol Now I just have to eventually piece together the consist.
I know someone… a learned teacher or sorts… who has extras of nearly all of those cars lol…
@@DoctorHobby hello have you heard of a Rivarossi Milwaukee road 4-6-2 heavy pacific as I have one and many coaches to go with it
The reading and northern just had a double header with T1 2102 and their light Pacific 425 and it didn't look funny being the smaller engine in the rear
See.. this is _exactly_ the type of "yeah, keep it and run it" bias that I'm looking for! Thanks tons!
The rivarossi 5299 looks very close to the real 5299. My new favorite rivarossi steam locomotive
That's true--they did a really nice job on it. One of my more favorite models from this company. I'll get to converting it here pretty soon!
@@DoctorHobby also it looks very close to the real Chicago & Alton P-16 and P-16b pacifics
Beautiful Rivarossi set, I just spent $1,200 making a 14-car Pennsylvania consist mostly with Rivarossi cars from the 1980s/1990s because its so cool they were made in Italy and not China. Using two new rapido EMD E8A's for motive power and its wonderful so far. Most all of the cars squeak loudly, can you put a bit of lubricant on these to stop the squeaking or no? I haven't tried it yet but really want to.
I am no Model train expert, but I would convert the Rivarossi to DCC. Sound makes a big difference. Who makes the passenger cars. Nice consist.
You’re plenty expert and I think your idea is the best out of all available options.
Update: I got brave and tried it, and the Riv will, indeed, pull the consist by itself. My Rivarossi Hiawatha is not able to, so this one must weigh slightly more or something.. fun! Still a tad worried about the running gear, tho…
the AHM/ Rivarossi's will take some serious abuse... had an AHM (still do) Santa Fe Pacific, and it still runs great, quiet, and smooth as glass... one of the reasons honestly why I like Pacifics in general so much...
Also got an idea for you... get an unlettered heavy pacific from broadway-limited and swap out the tender with a Paragon 3 Hew Haven unlettered tender and then paint the model into the Alton scheme based off the Rivarossi model.
A good idea, but custom paint isn’t something I’m going to really get in to in the near future. Takes too much time away from running trains ;)
You could and should re-paint the rivarossi pacific in gulf mobile & ohio colors, look up "Gulf Mobile & Ohio 5296" it looks alot like the Rivarossi 5299. Both are based on former Chicago & Alton 4-6-2s that become part of the GM&O after both railroads merged
The "Rivarossi" Light Pacific you had was likely an IHC/Mahano run, and not a Rivarossi one.
Ah, maybe so.. seems about right
Could weight be added inside the rivarossis shell to give it more traction?
It would help some, but the problem is is that the drivetrain probably can't really handle a ton of strain.. They're just not up to the task, I don't think.. But it's a good suggestion and probably wouldn't hurt to put in some weight. Thanks tons for watching!
Could you possibly chassis swap the Rivarossi with something newer?
Bowser used to make re-chassis kits for these that had a new frame and everything, but they stopped and they’re now really hard to find
With the Big engine go Dcc Long Train The Shorter Engine Pull only the 4 Cars itself.
Maybe that’ll be just the thing! Let’s see how it goes!
Are these locomotives still in production?
Neither is, but there’s a good chance the BLI version will be again one of these days.
ack!!!.. and they're using those rubber traction tires. These manufacturers need to just add weight and a better motor with flywheels...Rubber traction tires are actually not good for the motor, because it adds too much torque with no slippage....Too bad that is a nice model and runs very smooth and quiet, but i'd change the drivers and add weight....just me cuz i like to tinker with trains :)
That BLI color looks really washed out. The Rivi looks a much nicer loco!
I know I'm about to speak heresy, but you should keep the rivarossi and remove the original motor and replace it with a more modern, stronger can motor and convert to dcc. Possibly add more weight to get better traction. The bli isn't as nice as the rivarossi.
Sounds sensible to me, actually. Using another motor could allow for the installation of more cab details, as well.. Thanks tons!
@@DoctorHobby You are most welcome! I myself am about to attempt the same on a rivarossi y6b.
If you had a way to go in and add weight in the boiler of the rivarossi heavy pacific I think it will be perfect to pull the whole consist.
Don’t know how much room there is and I’m not sure if the running gear will hold up very well
