you nailed Warhol et al who just repeat the same thing over and over and just change the colors. Thanks, good advice, I just turned 70 and have my first show coming up in April.
That's great!! I'm 56 and I've decided to take on this crazy endeavor of becoming a professional artist. Why not? It sure gives me something to do during my mid life crisis. :)
Critique makes you better as an artist. Most people don’t understand the process and dedication it takes to create art. Some people will like it, some people won’t, you just have to stay true to your own voice because if you’re you’re an artist, you’re not going to quit, it’s in your blood, it’s in your bones, it’s in your brain, it’s in your heart, and the only way to quit is to die…..
In certain instances, yes, critique can help improve your art, specifically if it’s in the realm of realism or if technical skill is required to reproduce an image (such as shadow, line weight, composition etc). However, non-representational art, abstract or purely expressive works, in my opinion, are hard to properly critique. For example, a critic of an abstract piece could say: “this piece utilized color theory rather poorly, and feels clunky and unbalanced.” The artist may say “exactly. This piece expresses my inner feelings of imbalance and conflicting emotions.” And the artist isn’t wrong for saying that. The critic isn’t wrong, either, if it doesn’t speak to them, but they are wrong in the sense that it has to follow a particular mold.
@@HappyAccidentVideos This is why AI art should exist and demolish whatever it wants; it is an expression of those who designed it. They are the artist and are just expressing themselves through coding an AI that can take your image and make it with it what it wants. The sword cuts both ways.
I do, too. It seems he said a lot of things I wanted and needed to hear! Like, "I don't operate that way (I won't repaint this painting in purple to match your couch.)"
My mom was a professional artist but in print media. Before computers she did everything freehand for print media company’s would contract through the agency she worked for. She did stuff like the bic lighter’s logo and some stuff for camel cigarettes 🚬 and even a click it or ticket 🎫 logo for California highway patrol. She was definitely 💯 an artist very talented with endless potential. She gave up art by the end of her 30s and never painted again really till she died. I always tried to get her to paint
Being true to yourself is something that will reflect in the art you do and hopefully, the public will see it as a cornerstone in your style and approach. Also, being true is definitely an eye-opener and something that I will remember from you. Thank you, Dick.
Thanks so much for this! Yes, I could make 17 more of one painting in diff colors. but I would ALSO be true to myself and do what I want. I was in music and had a lot of the same sort of thing. But also doing what you want and need to do is important. Keep up the great work and thanks for the advice to us new artists.
Heres what it means. You are at the understanding that your artwork might suck to some but not others. My grandmother was a professional artist. She was a sculptor and painter and made native american jewelry. She was the great grandaughter of Chief Washakie. Her last installment was for the Smithsonian, but sadly, she died before ever completing it. After that, our family turned on one another and killed her legacy.
Thanks for sharing your insights Dick, it's very important for us artists to have autonomy - even in this commercial world. It's a shame that creativity isn't afforded more respect and understanding. I love that you emphasis being true to the artist within.
I had few shows last year and it was definitely worth the experience. I got through same things and feelings he speaks and learned something while feeling it. Great advices! And you got yourself a new subscriber
I been seeing so many showing viewers a tracing of an animal, or domestic to do in pastels. Others actually show HOW to Trace and transfer the phono onto the caper or canvas, without ever learning how to do it without tracing and Coping from a phot. I mentioned.to them, about trying to show how when they the artists tracing, that it shows to do it without a tracing. ONE said to know the anatomy that is Plagiarizing too. I mentioned, this is why so many art galleries do NOT accept realistic work. How to be TRUE when so many are Faking it.?
Thank you. I've learned over the years that criticism is par for the course, as the saying goes :) I can only be true to myself, anything else outside of that is out of my control.
I used to have a framer here in Carmel, CA. I also used to make my own, as I worked with a framer as an apprentice in high shcool. In recent years, I order frames from Dick Blick online. Most of my larger paintings, I don't frame; I just paint sides.
70% for the gallery is now the standard and it's outrageous. Artist run galleries and coops are the way to go; except most artists don't want to or lack skills running a gallery.
I worked in both the field of teaching art history, 3 colleges locally and a private school as well. I also worked in the field of counseling in the area of psychiatry for the schizophrenic, as well as receiving a grant to work at the Soledad Correctional State Facility to paint (at the time) the worlds longest wall mural, it was half a mile long. This was also done with help from the inmates. I've done quite a few things in my career, teaching art was always something I did part time. All of this work was done so I could sustain myself, and make time for my art. This was so I would not be at the mercy of the galleries. I could create the kind of art I wanted to make.
there are a lot of no talent mofos exhibiting art work: mine is actually good and I dont have the money to show it anywhere. I've been doing it 35 years.
Being true to yourself is everything. Well said.

Well said!
Thanks for sharing your wisdom Dick. These are the things you don't learn in school, but from life experience.
This is the advise I wish I had been given as a young artist. I could have saved myself a lot of time, money and grief.
Advice rhymes with mice
And ur point is?... everybody lives and learns.

some people just live.
very good thanks
He said professional artist means asking people to buy your work and support your existence. I love that 😅😊
I do, too. It seems he said a lot of things I wanted and needed to hear! Like, "I don't operate that way (I won't repaint this painting in purple to match your couch.)"

You're very welcome! I constantly am creating new work. You can see many more updates at my Instagram: instagram.com/dickcrispo/
I like what you said at the start, too many artists online are too sensitive about their art.
It's very personal for sure, everyone is different.
Pure wisdom. Thanks!

Being true to myself is what I have always worked toward in my art, to this very day.
Good advice, we need more practical info like this.
I feel he was distracted by the camera person moving around, which made me distracted.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom!
You are welcome, and thank you!
Two thing I would add is, "BRANDING" Your self and Listing yourself as an Artist, Don't wait.
Branding is a way to do it, but not for everyone. I agree though it does work
Very good advice about reading contracts and true to your self. Point taken. Cheers 😎😎😎🔥🔥🔥
You're welcome. Cheers!
Thank you sir.
You are welcome!
Thank you.
Thank you!
Great line, “Be true to yourself and read the contract.” 😂😂😂😂

This video is great but it doesn't need the background music.
Thank you very helpfull
Happy to help, and thank you!
This was wonderful, except I could've done without the music. Otherwise, excellent.
Thank you, and thank you for the feedback :)

I thought it was just me who buys as many brushes and paints as I can buy.
I am out of galleries or media waste of time that i can paint

May I say I hate that piano? I can’t wait that out.
Of course you may say that. Be true to yourself ;)
Please consider getting rid of the distracting background music
please stop moving the camera around
I did not see that he made a real point here, and --- I did not like any of the paintings shown.
Thank you sir.
