Malacca is best appreciated if you are a history enthusiast. For example, that St Paul's hill you went is actually a previous war scene involved in 3 super maritime power struggle back then; it wasn't dilapidated due to neglect in maintaining. It was first used as a church by locals, but war made the place abandoned due to bad vibes, especially after British took over from Dutch (whom had taken it over from the Portuguese) since they had selfishly used the place to store their war artillery. With such direct connection to war and bloodshed, locals decided to relocate the church to another place to reconsecrate it. Some places you can find in Banda Hilir (near Jonker Walk area) is also a reminder of Malaysia's long history with China. Malacca was a thriving port due to the location being in the middle of the world (as a historical buff, i let you guess another location that is way better than Malacca due to this reason haha! Clue, it is a country on its own as of today), which means even when it was peaceful, there will still be outside powers itching to get a hold of it. Siam (now Thailand) was one of them, but due to the protection by then-Chinese dynasty, Malacca is spared from Siam's intervention. This is the reason why some mosque in Malacca is built with pagoda architecture; China was our friend even back then. But yeah, going to such places with kids will be quite a hassle since they have yet to come to appreciate all these. Melaka's humidity also makes it hard for them to focus, so i myself always prepare mini fans for them to lessen the complains 😂
