    Specialized Brain suspension is madness. It's a luxury product that works worse than cheaper forks and shocks.
    Brain suspension is great for:
    1. marketing
    2. pro XC riders who have their own mechanics and don't particularly care about suspension that works well
    3. status
    4. people who should be on a hardtail anyway and don't mind throwing cash in a dumpster

    I am an XC rider and disagree entirely with you. I have been an Epic user since the 2014 versions, and I believe it's the reverse. I have had a single problem in the 3 models I had (I even had the RS1). My experience was always the contrary. The brain system is a peace of mind; I have the power of an HT bike and the comfort of a full sus.

      Your perspective and analogy is spot on! The brain system, is a counterintuitive/ counteractive piston valve system with major flaws! I was a master Toyota technician for many years, plus Master ASE certified! Rode many XC and hard tail mountain bikes! Specialized need to redesign the system!

    Fully agree. The fork kind of simulates a sticky badly maintained old damper. The rear suspension can work ok if it's regularly serviced and you don't mind the clunk you feel when it opens up.

    Thank you - so close to buying one of these 2nd hand. Weighing up the pro's and cons for the brain system - will it work for me anyway because I'm tough, and surely, "it must be better than the hardtail?" Even had a chat to some guys at my local dealer bike shop ("Oh yeah, we know that guy, he just had his shockers serviced here recently, it's a small world!). This also helps explain why a $12K bike from 2018 is going for only $3.5 - $4 K now. Dissapointing, as I've been investing much time into researching it, but I think youi've saved me from a rather expensive mistake.

    Currently have a 2012 M5 with a rear brain and it feels really good for more general getting around.. despite being designed with the mtb market in mind.. The absorbsion when hitting something big is more like a nice feature for general purpose riding. I don't use it for trail riding.

    Completely agree with you. I have a 2018 model epic with brain 2.0, and it sucks. Every time the system fails, and the repair is very expensive. And I'm not mention the time to get the bike back. The service of maintaining it every 200 hours is nonsense. I'm pretty sorry I bought it. Specialized has simple ripped us with this bike.

    Video poster is lying in several things: Even in small country where I live there are SEVERAL companies which service BRAIN dampers with no issues. Also The damper is not analyzing any terrain and such BS, it just closes on slow rhytmic vibes from pedaling, so you can pedal with full cadency and there is no bumping! I have RS-1 with brain and it works perfectly! Comfy ride with no bumping from pedaling uphill!!!

    Other thing that barely no body talks is the REGRESSIVE suspension. In other words, when you need suspension, you have it. it's full travel. No BS. Bailed me out countless times. It gets squishy when service is needed. All right, man. Even a Ferrari needs maintenance

    Had a bunch of epics.
    The 1st one, 2010my. That initial knock made me leave it to full open and be done with it, but I was upset about carrying the brain extra 200g on the rear of the bike. Installed a Monarch 3P, and I was surprised to find that the comfort increased significantly.
    Then, a S-works, same year. Shock was shot, tried a service, came worse than it was. So the service side of it is also bad. Changed both the fork and shock on that one, Sid and Monarch.
    Now I've bought an Epic like in this video. Full open, missing the propedal of a normal shock, since no way I would activate the brain. So I went and bought an Evo, to just be done with the brains for good.
    To sum it up, the main issue is the knock.
    Weirdly enough, to switch between the open and locked, you need to descend from the bike, and that is way worse than a classic shock.
    Marketing, prolongued waaaaay too long.

  • @billcooper2798

    $12,000 bike with a electric taped tire tube to the frame. Hmm Crazy Talk that Specialized won’t be supporting the brain after 5 years. I find that heard to believe. If true, it’s terrible for them and the consumer.

    • @DirtCraftMTB
      @DirtCraftMTB  Рік тому +2

      Terrible indeed. It's not a big deal for most SWORKS buyers... that bike will be long gone by then. It's just not a good deal for the person that keeps bikes a long time or buys it second hand. More importantly than all that support or lack of, is the fact that the suspension is optimized to work worse than normal. If somebody wanted it that stiff there are better and cheaper ways to achieve it. It's good for parking lot test rides, that's all.

    I never like the brain, just a lag of responsiveness. The thing with the brain, what it really is is for dumb down dampen adjustment. Most folks don't really know how to adjust dampeners properly and the brain is made as the run around for that.

      I haven't had a chance to see one in person yet but I'm intrigued. I don't love the concept, honestly. I wish Spesh would just make the standard epic 100/100 non brain with stiff lockouts. It would be one thing if the frame was actually a fair bit lighter but it's so close I'd rather have the extra travel. I view it and the supercaliber as "a better hardtail" more than a total full suspension rig. And in that way, they're probably significantly better.... but at a big weight penalty. I also am very curious of the "zero sag" concept will make for a harsh top-out clunk or not. Time will tell!

    In orden of that, Can you tell us whi you dont like eather the fox live valve in the anthem?

    • @DirtCraftMTB
      @DirtCraftMTB  2 роки тому +3

      Of those options that you listed, I'd opt for the Epic Evo first. Second choice would be the BMC which has a really good suspension platform.
      I don't like the Live Valve or Flight Attendant automatic systems because they're complex, heavier, more expensive, and ultimately leave the suspension working worse. I think standard lockouts are both more effective at being firm AND more active when open - the only downside is having to move the lever yourself. But that's such an easy thing to do that it has never bothered me.
      Those automatic systems rely on inertial valves and speed sensitive sensors. The marketing will tell you that they open faster than you could ever open them yourself except for one very important thing.... you don't wait to open the system in real time. You open it or close it before you want it. You have the most sophisticated vision system already on board (your own two eyes) and you can read the terrain long before those systems ever will.
      Live valve even went through an update to lessen the harshness from V1 so there's your admission....it's an inherently stiff system which was improved by making it less impactful. A further improvement would be removing it all together and using standard suspension.

      I think the Epic has better geometry than the current BMC. But of course that is subjective too. It's not going to be drastically different but the Specialized will be a little more stable and composed in rough stuff. The new 2023 BMC is pretty close to identical geometry wise so at that point, it's a toss up based on weight, cost, and availability.

      You might be right, and you certainly have a right to express how you FEEL...but it's a silly and agro to tell the guy how he feels and not accept that he could have a different opinion.
