He Mark! I came from the future to thank you that you showed me this game. Your review made me check this game out back in 2012, Kainé looked nice so I wanted to check out this generic looking action RPG. And boy, Nier is part of my life ever since, I love this to pieces. Thank you!
Agreed with everything you said besides the soundtrack niot having enough variety. the soundtrack is incredible, especially the stand out tracks. Cannot believe I haven't noticed nier at all until nier 2 was announced at e3. It was an incredible emotional experience you rarely see in a game. Combined with the complex but certainly followable, great storyline and chareacters, as well as voice acting.. makes it one of my favorite games of all time.
This game is SOOOOO underrated it's a crime. I had a hunch that this game was gonna be amazing but the reviews didn't give it much positive reviews. But I followed my gut and got it and man... this game is one of my top 10 of last gen. This game was just so awesome. The story, the music and the gameplay. This game really made you feel for the characters. Like how Uncharted 2 did.
Thank you, Mark! This video made me interested in Nier back in 2011 or early 2012. I remember like it was yesterday as I played the game and hooked me right in, I played it on a Sunday afternoon and the next day I couldn't get the field music out of my head. I was curious of this game because there was this hottie in it, Kainé with a perfect back and I stayed for the story, the world and characters. Thank you again, Mark for showing me the way! I love Nier ever since!
Lol, Zero Punctuation. Yahtzee's all bark but no real bite. I feel like a lot of people, when it comes to reviews, get sucked in by IGN and Destructoid and other sites for a long time. Then, as they gain some discernment, they see how slanted it is. Then they find ZP. After the novelty of Yahtzee's insults wear off and they see how weak his reviews are, they move on. Eventually, the lucky ones find Classic Game Room. Fun, real reviews from real people where console wars need not exist.
I don't think most people watch Yahtzee for an actual review, but for the comedy. He's even said himself that his reviews aren't meant to be taken seriously.
Yeah he’s mainly a comedy show. But honestly after playing a lot of the games he has reviewed, he makes a lot of valid points. I think his longer game discussions are more insightful though for sure than an ZP can be
@wendysnailland That is why I always try to get a hold of the OST after playing a game or movie I love when possible. It is a good aid,at least for me. If I were to work in a gamestore I don't think I could resist the temptation of not playing the latest games. How do you manage?
I watched gamespots's review, and they gave it the lowest rating. Then i watched CGR's review, and once the video was over i went to ebgames and picked it up. I'm loving every second of it.
Does anybody know the tune he plays during the subwoofer robot fight? I really want to find it but I have no idea where it comes from. Help is much appreciated!
One of the few JRPGs that have a story that I actually love. The voice-acting in this game is friggin' amazing too for an English dub. Suck on that, other JRPGs who cosntantly rely on whiny teenagers!
Amazing review at a time when nier wasn't the popular thing it is now. WIth that being said, Nier and Automata finally was the game that beat the Metal Gear Solid series for me when it comes to music, and imo has the best video game OST of all time lol. With that being said, everything else you said is on point!
Usually I only watch video reviews of games I'm interested in. The only exception for this is CGR, because I know no matter what game the review will be both entertaining and very informative. Now after watching this I really do want to check the game out, so I probably would have missed out on a good game without this review to change my mind. Thanks CGR!
Gotta love this reviewer. It's because of him that I bought games like Earth Defense Force 2017 and Wolfenstein (there are more; those are just two off the top of my head); I have absolutely no regrets about those purchases. Keep it up! :D
The soundtrack and story in Nier is up there with the best of Final Fantasy, Xenogears, and Chrono Trigger (the usually named greatest RPGs of all time). One of my very favorite games, a slightly flawed masterpiece that is much more than the sum of its' parts.
I love when I run out from the "tunnels" at the beach in Seafront and the brightness of the sunlight makes my eyes hurt. Feels so real somehow. I love this game, the story and all the characters.
You are the first reviewer I've seen that didn't care for the soundtrack. I'm a bit surprised, actually. I thought is was wonderful. The cool crescendos, percussion, and the choir made this soundtrack stand out, in my opinion. This is easily one of my most favorite soundtracks.
I bought this game last night because of this review. It's amazing to see the difference in user score and the "professional" press score for this game. Everyone who doesn't work for the gaming press and therefore isn't in the pockets of companies like Activision who pay them to rate every Call of Duty game a 11/10, they all love this game. I think I will too.
Great review, as always! I really wanna pick this up now! I just wish I had the time these days... too many games go unfinished because there's just too much going on in life.
I'am looking for next game to play after Nier, but cant seem to find anything besides turn based game (not that i dont like them). Can you recommend some games with nice story line and maybe action type (can be turn based too) ?
If you have a Wii i would recommend "Xenoblade Chronicles", for a DS "The World Ends With You"(wich in my opinion is the best game i have ever played and my second favourite). For the 360/PS3 i really liked Catherine(if you can buy the Collector's Edition XD). If you have an Xbox One then get Ryse(yes it has a good story, not only graphics). For PC play any Total War game, although not having an story mode everyone that played it has some epic stories to talk about how you won that impossible battle(shogun 2 is my favourite)
This is one of the trippiest, strangest and darkest JRPGs to ever reach the west. It's one of my favourite games of this generation. It isn't that the gameplay is amazing, but more that the game is so bizarre that it overcomes all of the stumbling blocks I see it set itself up for.
I am not a fan of the Japanese style of games and especially not FF but I love this game so much. The story is amazing and the game play is just fun. The graphics may not be the most pin sharp technological graphics out there but they give the game its grit. The story is not a cute story so the gritty graphics seem to portray that. EVERYONE BUY NIER, and hopefully some of the big wigs may realize there is a market for good story games which are just pure fun.
@Cattra65 Well, I never meant to imply that. I think that since so many people do judge games based solely on graphics, maybe you thought that that's what I was doing. I wasn't. I was simply pointing out that the graphics aren't as good as they potentially could have been. I will admit that youtube's compression certainly doesn't help in the graphics department; however you can generally tell when a game has dazzling graphics or not-so-dazzling, the latter being the case with Nier.
I just completed Nier. And I think it's one of the best games I've ever played. So moving and emotional, well written, understandable thou has some plot twists. I love this game!
Now this is the review of Nier I have been looking for. All others I have read or seen have been very undicided, even confused, but you seem to get the game the way it is suppose to be seen.. now I can put it on my to do list without any worries :)
this is why i watch CGR. i learn about games i usually would never take any notice of rather than hearing about how great the really well known games are some more.
The music was very good in my opinion. Very original. Yes, it could use more variety, but the tracks are so good, I tended not to care. My only complaint in this game was the hack n' slash style swordplay. The magic makes up for that though.
The major turning point in the game for me was Emil's very haunted mansion. At which point, the story took me by the throat, and it only got better after that. My favorite boss fight is still the aforementioned 'boom box' guy from the desert temple, in all of his forms. That fight alone was an amazing mix of Dodonpachi, Rez, and Legend of Zelda. "The Ultimate Weapon" is still my favorite vidya track of all time, and probably always will be. (a close 2nd favorite is "Song of the Ancients / Fate")
How do you guys feel about the character thing? Squeenix decided to make 2 different characters, a more masculine one for the West, and a more classic "girly" protagonist for the Japanese version.
After watching this review I bought the game a few years ago. I probably put a good 50 hours + into it back then and didn't do all the missions. I'm going to delete my old save and play this again. It's an absolutely fantastic game, one of the best gaming experiences in my opinion. Buy it!
hearing a review that predates nier's boom in popularity saying that the soundtrack was mediocre is interesting! i feel like a big part of why modern audiences like it so much is because it has such a unique identity as _the nier soundtrack,_ so back when that label didn't really have any kind of prestige attached, i guess more people thought that unique identity was a bit samey across all the different tracks
When you beat the game, you have to play new game plus. It explains the story so well in another angle. That is the main reason why NieR has a cult following and is so beloved all these years.
@AnimeXeta Some special items don't respawn. You need them to make ultimate weapons. And having at least one will make life in Nier easier. Combined with magic it is a lot of fun. Like I said before it takes a little while to get into the game. But when you do you will be rewarded for your patience.
He's also War from Darksiders, Gaara from Bleach, Orlando from Catherine, Asura from Asura's Wrath, and a fuckton more. Liam O'Brien is an amazing person.
@UnchainTheNight1 1)Boy was blind for his entire life, and now FINALLY can see. + He had much admiration for the main character. = This line. 2)This game takes place in 32XX, you make no sense. It's also a magical book from likely before even 2010, possibly as old as many thousands of years.
VERY UNDERRATED GAME -music is amazing -atmosphere was relaxing -art style is very cool (idk why IGN and GameSpot said its terrible) -very awesome characters *except Emil (he's annoying) though, one thing i didnt like was the Battle Mechanics/system. it felt too easy, and the lack of use of magic (like magic wall, gluttony, execution) i never used them. it was always Dark Lance most of the time :/ well i hope this game turned into a series. it deserves more
They did, on the PS2 with 'Drakengard' and its sequel, two of the most compelling story-driven games I've ever played that were victim of bad reviews despite being two of my favorite games of the PS2's era.
I remember Mark saying he is an audiophile and although the songs DO get repetitive (especially the one in the open plains) they're so damn good! Best ones are the the vocal songs though.
For what it's worth though 2010 WAS the year for action games. Nier, Knights Contract, Bayonetta 1, Dante's Inferno, Majin Forsaken Kingdom, Enslaved, God of War III, and what else did I forgot?
@Jacko459 I assume you say this from personal experience playing the video game, because nobody ever will judge a game saying if its good or bad without touching it, amirite?
@TheHunterNM I dont know if you have found out yet, but it IS KIND of open world. what can i say.. its open world when you are not doing any quests in the sense that you can visit different locations that you were earlier. its more of a story driven game though so you don`t really care about the "open world" element of NIER all that much. its worth picking up if you want a solid and original story.
@SavageArms357 Book's name is Grimoire Weiss. Pronounced 'Vice'. Weiss = White. The 'evil book' of the game is called Grimoire Noir. Noir = Black. SPOILERZ!!!!~~~ Both books are 'evil', but through experiences travelling with Nier/the Father, Kaine (underwear sword girl) and Emil (magic doll boy), Weiss overcomes this and assists you to the end... the very end. Tis sad. *cry*
My only disagreement: I can't replace that soundtrack. I mean, it's too damn good to replace.
I half expected the book to shout 'YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!'
The studio that made this game clearly kept acid fully stocked in the break room.
My god. A review with hardly any negative comments. Nier is being considered.
YOU DON'T THINK THE SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING!?
Did you know it was Number 1 on the Japanese Album Charts for 4 weeks?
lankyGigantic
Apparently it "only" reached 24 and stayed on for 11 weeks.
It's still very impressive for a video game soundtrack album.
@@lankyGigantic цууцццууу
He is in 80s music......
Because hes corny annoyingly.....
He Mark! I came from the future to thank you that you showed me this game. Your review made me check this game out back in 2012, Kainé looked nice so I wanted to check out this generic looking action RPG. And boy, Nier is part of my life ever since, I love this to pieces. Thank you!

NieR is the dictionary definition of underrated. I'm so glad that Mark recognises what a superb game it is. Why are all other game "critics" so dumb?
Was the scene that he showed of the book dieing a huge spoiler?
***** The book didn't die, and it isn't a spoiler.
This game is SOOOOO underrated it's a crime. I had a hunch that this game was gonna be amazing but the reviews didn't give it much positive reviews. I miss what this channel used to be
He had me sold on "Long Island Iced Tea of video games". That's my favorite drink :3
This review was the entire reason I bought the game.
Damn, it's nice to see mark of all people giving this game some love! Respect !!
P.S. Are you gonna be reviewing nier automata now that it's out?
Lol, Zero Punctuation. Yahtzee's all bark but no real bite. I feel like a lot of people, when it comes to reviews, get sucked in by IGN and Destructoid and other sites for a long time. Such an awesome game with even better music! LOVE this game!
the music was amazing, story amazing and game play good in my opinion. Far better than your average game.
@crazymiles I've played them all, which one you referring to?
@wendysnailland
That is why I always try to get a hold of the OST after playing a game or movie I love when possible. It is a good aid,at least for me. If I were to work in a gamestore I don't think I could resist the temptation of not playing the latest games. How do you manage?

you just sold me on this game, i recently found info on the sequel. HOW THE FUCK have i never seen this game before!
One of the few JRPGs that have a story that I actually love.

3:20 - is that the same VA as walter?
Amazing review at a time when nier wasn't the popular thing it is now. What's the music in the first five seconds of the video?
I've been looking for NIER for a year now and I can't find it in the stores around here. Sadly importing it would be too expensive as well.
Can you use the Gestalt costume DLC on the main game?
is that illidans voice? from the book?
0:26 what music is that playing?
Usually I only watch video reviews of games I'm interested in. The only exception for this is CGR, because I know no matter what game the review will be both entertaining and very informative.

Is Kaine in the 360 ver as well PS3?
whats the intro song at the very beginning of the video?
One of the most underrated games ever. COD kids just don't appreciate amazing games like these.
are you also going to do prince of persia the forgotten sands??
Gotta love this reviewer. It's because of him that I bought games like Earth Defense Force 2017 and Wolfenstein (there are more; those are just two off the top of my head); I have absolutely no regrets about those purchases. Keep it up! :D
I'm a beginner. Should I do the game on easy, or normal?
dude i would really appreciate if you could tell me the name of the song you played while fighting against the boom box monster XD
The soundtrack and story in Nier is up there with the best of Final Fantasy, Xenogears, and Chrono Trigger (the usually named greatest RPGs of all time). One of my very favorite games, a slightly flawed masterpiece that is much more than the sum of its' parts.

I love this game, the story and all the characters.
What's that song at 0:05?
can someone please tell me which song mark used at the boombox robot? ^^
just started this game (360). 10 hours in. amazing. and that music!
You are the first reviewer I've seen that didn't care for the soundtrack. I'm a bit surprised, actually. I thought is was wonderful. The cool crescendos, percussion, and the choir made this soundtrack stand out, in my opinion. This is easily one of my most favorite soundtracks.
I can’t wait for the remake
ive been meaning to get this but havent been able to find a copy in the wild.
Hey can you do Darksiders next ( although i think you already did it )
or can you do Sly Cooper next?
is it sort of open world?
You can change the music out for your own with the PS3 version as well.
First positive review of this game i've seen. I still wanna play it.
this gam eneeds to come for plus for ps3 or they should have a HD version of it for ps4
I bought this game last night because of this review. It's amazing to see the difference in user score and the "professional" press score for this game. This is a Japanese action RPG so you should search for those.
Okay, I need to know the song going on during the subwoofer laser attack clips, that's just too awesome XD
Would you say it's Nier perfect?
This is one of the trippiest, strangest and darkest JRPGs to ever reach the west. It's one of my favourite games of this generation. It isn't that the gameplay is amazing, but more that the game is so bizarre that it overcomes all of the stumbling blocks I see it set itself up for.
really well done and entertaining review!

Where the hell can I get this game in Australia, hardly anyone stocks it now
definitely track down a copy, it's great - try ebay for a PAL version
Yeah I found a copy and ordered it today actually
The music was very good in my opinion. Very original. Yes, it could use more variety, but the tracks are so good, I tended not to care. My only complaint in this game was the hack n' slash style swordplay. The magic makes up for that though.
@SycrosD4 He only mentioned that the music needed more variety.

ar u reviewing Red Dead Redemption???
CGR, you rock!
All the mainstream sites are ragging on Nier like it's a piece of crap, but it seems word-of-mouth agrees about its awesomeness.
just picked this game up. LOVE IT! Thanks CGR!
After watching this review I bought the game a few years ago. I probably put a good 50 hours + into it back then and didn't do all the missions. I'm going to delete my old save and play this again. It's an absolutely fantastic game, one of the best gaming experiences in my opinion. Buy it!
why delete the save when you beat the game for an ending it does that anyway
i blame final fantasy might AS well get the trophy then delete
Should I buy this game? I can get it for 6 dollars from gamefly with my coupons.
THE MUSIC IN THIS GAME IS ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS I HAVE EVER HEARD.
hearing a review that predates nier's boom in popularity saying that the soundtrack was mediocre is interesting!
i feel like a big part of why modern audiences like it so much is because it has such a unique identity as _the nier soundtrack,_ so back when that label didn't really have any kind of prestige attached, i guess more people thought that unique identity was a bit samey across all the different tracks
What's really weird though is on the DLC on the Western version you play as the same Nier from the Japanese version.
When you beat the game, you have to play new game plus. It explains the story so well in another angle.
That is the main reason why NieR has a cult following and is so beloved all these years.
@AnimeXeta
Some special items don't respawn.
I've got to ask this: Is it possible to have the audio on Japanese with English subtitles? I hate it when games/movies/series are dubbed.
"The gameplay backs it up because it's good" 10/10 review lol Nah really though CGRundertow should have reviewed this.
I thought it was one of the best soundtracks in any game. I guess it helps that I really like orchestral and solo instrument music.
it's good to see Square doing something different once in a while
@UnchainTheNight1 1)Boy was blind for his entire life, and now FINALLY can see. + He had much admiration for the main character. = This line.
2)This game takes place in 32XX, you make no sense. It's also a magical book from likely before even 2010, possibly as old as many thousands of years.
VERY UNDERRATED GAME
-music is amazing
-atmosphere was relaxing
-art style is very cool (idk why IGN and GameSpot said its terrible)
-very awesome characters *except Emil (he's annoying)
though, one thing i didnt like was the Battle Mechanics/system.
it felt too easy, and the lack of use of magic (like magic wall, gluttony, execution)
i never used them. it was always Dark Lance most of the time :/
well i hope this game turned into a series. it deserves more
They did, on the PS2 with 'Drakengard' and its sequel, two of the most compelling story-driven games I've ever played that were victim of bad reviews despite being two of my favorite games of the PS2's era.
Monster Hunter + ICO + Gradius = Nier
I remember Mark saying he is an audiophile and although the songs DO get repetitive (especially the one in the open plains) they're so damn good! Best ones are the the vocal songs though.
The music in this game is great and I remember the trailers made it look interesting but I'll probably pick it up when it's really cheap.
Might pick this game up sometime...
Please do~ it's inexpensive and well worth the $8 I paid at GameStop for, plus the $7 for the extension DLC. The best $15 I ever spent on a game.
Gen F. It's like 30 dollars now...
Whoah, this review man! I'm so hyped to dust off my old PS3 right about now.
For what it's worth though 2010 WAS the year for action games. Nier, Knights Contract, Bayonetta 1, Dante's Inferno, Majin Forsaken Kingdom, Enslaved, God of War III, and what else did I forgot?
if you're new in Nier you'll love every bit's on it even it's poor graphics, but until you reach the forest of myth with the dreams missions.
@Jacko459 I assume you say this from personal experience playing the video game, because nobody ever will judge a game saying if its good or bad without touching it, amirite?
