    Roger Dean is the artist for the album cover. :) The same guy who has done Yes' album covers among others. :) Please check the picture disc behind you and you'll recognise his style immediately. :) The late Gary Thain on bass. "Why ? " is a bit forgotten gem from them and has some great guitar playing from Mick Box.

      It is weird how songs of a particular type or genre are picked up by other countries. A lot of edgy Australian rock from the 80s was picked up and followed by new fans in South America. They also go for bands like Nightwish, etc. Just shows the universality of music.

    Easy Livin' is their most straight-forward rock/pop song and is a pretty good one which always gets the crowd going when done live though I prefer their proggier stuff like July Morning and Salisbury. Heep may never have been in the Premier Division of rock but they're certainly Championship contenders (this metaphor might be lost on American viewers!)

    In real time, the habit with concept albums and progressive music generally, was to get the speakers or headphones close to your ears, imbibe your relaxant, the study the album art for hidden messages. For me this was only true for the 100%ers, ie albums that had no filler and was a brand new unified thing in an increasingly chaotic world. The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Zappa, Renaissance, Gryphon, Gong, Gentle Giant. I had this album and dug several songs on it, but never saw anything in the waterfall, because I didn't see it as satisfying all the criteria for intense study. If we're gonna go the best school route, we have to marinate our minds in the best culture has to offer, and not waste too much on second and third tier and derivative brilliance. "Rain" is my favorite by them. It is a quiet and beautiful ballad. "Easy Livin" was probably their most popular, and was one to get you off your seats. That wall of sound coming at you from the organ/guitar was their innovation, I think.

    • @frankpentangeli7945
      @frankpentangeli7945 2 роки тому +1

      In my view if it had more variation it wouldn't have the impact that it has. I think it was meant to be short, hard, sweet, direct and brilliant, like an explosion on the senses. A lightning blast doesn't have much variation, after all. Just my perspective. Cheers!

    'Ole Audiophile to JP: We adored this band...until we saw them. Three times up, three strikes in a row in my case. Somebody on stage had NO sense of timing for every show we witnessed. The worst was with Rush & Manfred Mann's Earth Band as in it's even worse when BOTH warm-up acts embarrass the main act to absolute death. The biggest ugly mess sound we EVER heard, like a big smear. Uggh! Rush, absolutely perfect, Manfred Mann blew us away, then crap all over the stage, people throwing things, it got ugly fast. Wow, was it awful, especially after being worked onto a frenzy by the first two acts. Whew, what a let down...

      Why does a band member or member(s) play consistently out of time? Either, they didn't care because they were too drunk or they didn't care period because they felt slighted being stuck in Cleveland, take your pick. I witnessed Heep perform 4th in a 5 act World Series Of Rock, again, the ONLY act to totally stink. Three years, three shows from three tours, all completely stank, what would you think? We thought the worst & their record sales plummeted right around the Wonder World Tour.

      Even when the band performs well, it can be rough for them when the opening act is just better. I saw Focus as the warmup band for Joe Cocker (in Vancouver in the 70s) and the it just wasn't fair. Focus was just so much better that it wasn't close.

    I mention Songs for the Deaf BEECAUSE if Uriah had the balls to evolve they would have gone in the approximate direction of Deaf. Some say that the band was fueled by Mojave winds, beer, and methamphetamins. I'll ask Josh if he decides to go vegan. Seriously if you want your band to rock as a single organism, kids, get the heck away from everything and jam your perfect asses off. Turn off yer funking fones and play. Play in the sun, play in the river, play in the middle of Hollywood Boulevard, nobody cares. BTW it's o.k. to skip songs on Deaf, they are not all gems. I would mix the album down from two to one. Josh won't let me. "You'd make a bloody fortune, Mister Homme!..." - "I'm an artist, man, listen to this riff..." and I listen. Dude has a million genius riffs.

    When I first heard this back in my high school days, I heard it as an overtly Christian message. The phrases and word choices really expressly matched Christian verbiage. Over time, I have never heard what message the authors were specifically delivering, but the lack of specificity is actually a good thing, artistically. Yes, it can be spiritual, romantic, familial - any relationship that is fractured and healed through forgiveness. And that's a good message in any case.

    We covered this in my HS band. Rolling Stone (the magazine) infamously described Heep as 'the Deep Purple for thinking 12 year olds.'

    Speaking of long and winding roads, check out Long Strange Golden Road by The Waterboys. It's a classic rock song written outside the classic rock era. ua-cam.com/video/7KDFVRVHTLU/v-deo.html

    'Ole Audiophile here on a footnote: We adored their studio work. Easy LIvin' was just a blip, a freak of production more than likely from a hungry record producer. In terms of the actual album, anyone that's heard this whole thing more than twice knows the best, absolute strongest song is at the tail end of the record as in 'Paradise/The Spell'. Not a fast formula hit as Easy Livin' is/so common in rock/progressive to end the album with its strongest piece.

      This is a record production fact not so commonly known from the early to mid 70s. Live albums were plentiful, but the market was too smart/refused to endorse lower quality recordings. About 1976, things rounded a huge corner quality wise, good live recordings began to occur fairly frequently. Who can forget the success of Peter Frampton Comes Alive, oh, wow, was that huge for example. I keep thinking back to George Benson On Broadway, also a giant production & success.

    Great track. Roger Dean's artwork (mostly YES posters) adorned my teenage bedroom wall back in the 70s. Now I have two of his hand-signed, limited edition, fine art prints on my (adult, non-bedroom) wall. Not that I'd want to sell it, but the "Tales from Topographic Oceans" one is now selling at 6 times what I paid for it back in 2005.

    Uriah Heep could be very heavy and this is a great example.
    Lady in black, is my favorite song. Slower but when the base kicks in; so good.

    Almost as soon as this started, In the back of my mind I heard, "Call Me!" (Blondie), and I couldn't get back on track. I didn't enjoy this, and am finding UH running hot and cold. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for uptempo numbers, but there was an 'artificiality' to this I just didn't like. Akin to putting an album on at 45rpm, by mistake instead of 33. Yeah, not fussed.
