I'm making myself a beauty dish very much like this one over the next few weeks, using the following: •Dish• 18" stainless steel mixing bowl •Mount• Very similar mount to the one used in this video, but a bit cheaper •Reflector• A jam strainer funnel without the funnel or strainer part •Light leak shield (Like the pizza tray)• 22cm metal cooker top cover •And a few nuts & bolts like used here.. I just want to say thanks for posting this video and giving me some ideas guys! Cheers!
Hi Todd, great video! I'm having a hard time finding a 16 qt metal bowl. Would plastic work just as well? I figured since it's painted it doesn't rely on the reflection of the metal itself, and I could probably find a plastic bowl much easier (and probably cheaper). I know it wouldn't be as durable, but for the cost I'd probably be willing to accept that at least for a while. Thanks for the great videos!
this should be gold cuz if you dont know this, hes an amazing music photography and i follow his blogs and stuff and you should too, just google his name, and its sick, awesome shots,
True, a diffusion sock would soften the light. Overall, I think it would depend on the look you're going for with the beauty dish, since a matte white beauty dish would still have a different look than that of a socked dish.
Efficiency and softness of light are different things. Fine tuning the reflector for maximum output may result in artifacts, but it depends on what the desired result is.
Hi Todd! I was very impressed by your making your beauty dish. I am in the market for one myself and would like to see if I actually could make my own. Question: The backet you used. Where can I get just the bracket? Is that possible? Also I noticed on the photos you took with your beauty light that the lighting was indeed very great. Was curious why you chose to blur the people in the background behind the lead singer. Shouldn't they all be sharp?
Hey I love this tut can you guys tell me where I can buy the parts that you guys bought? I am having the most trouble finding the large mixing bowl. I really want like a 27 inch or so
thanks for this! I managed to built one myself but the problem I encountered is if I slot in the flash radio transreceiver below the flash, due to its length, I have to move the flash back, hence the flash can;t attach to the bowl.. :-/
This is true. However, I wanted the ability to adjust the light and fine tune it, which meant that leaving the screws unpainted was the much better choice. Still, I haven't noticed any issue from the bare metal screws creating any artifacts in the light output, either.
Sick!! Nice Project, Todd... nice to see you here on UA-cam :) Never saw your videos... anyway, I subscribed, so now you have to upload more tutorials LOL Cheers!
It was be easiest of all if people just bought a cheap beauty dish, as they're readily available on Amazon, B&H, eBay, etc. Really, this project is simply fun and rewarding if you have the right tools.
A 20qt mixing bowl doesn't have an overall diameter that's all that much larger than a 16qt bowl. You could most likely stay with the 8" pizza pan and adjust the distance to the bowl. But you might want to just get both size pans and see which one works the best.
hello todd ..... I have a canon flash 580ex2 and I wish I could build a beauty like yours in the video .... I wanted to know, please, if you tell me the diameter of the large pot because I have found only 40cm .... then I wanted to know where to buy the pot smallest internal ...... always of steel?? thanks
Hey in the detailed build instructions, you mentioned a link to a 20 qt mixing bowl on amazon. Would you happen to know what the diameter of that bowl would be? I saw that the 16 qt is 18 inches. Have you made one with a 20 qt? How does it work compared to the 16 qt? Thanks! Awesome design by the way and excellent photos on your website. Love it all.
A larger beauty dish (or any light modifier) will give you softer light (the bigger the diffuser, the more softened the light) as it diffuses the light wider and covers more area. Hope that helps.
Hi buddy! I'd like ask about the size of that big bowl and the small disk? in my country some photo group tried to make the BD and the result is all about some bad light came out cos' size of small disk. They said like it has to be flexible with the bowl.
great vid but....what do you do when you want a grid for this particular dish? :O A White Diffuser is easy to make but wondering what you would do for a grid?
Paresh Pandit A grid? The grids for beauty dishes are normally plastic and snap on and off the dish. Would be no practical way to attach a home made one out of cloth-ish material.
@usmintz There are a few samples in the written tutorial linked above, as well as links to samples by other photographers at the end of the post. Thanks for the comment.
Hey Todd, can you send me diameter of the bowl, because on U.K. Ebay ther is no bowls in Qt but on inch, so please give me diameters of the bowl, thank you
Can possible same beauty dish have an option of studio strobe light attachment either can be use for speed flash light or studio strobe light for home studio.

Wow, I'm impressed! What I love about your design is - unlike so much DIY stuff - not only does it perform, it LOOKS good! Thanks for the tutorial!
BEAUTY! I'll be trying this! Goes to show you don't need to spend a mint to create GORGEOUS photos! Keep up the great work! xxx

This is the best DIY beauty dish I have seen yet! Great job building it guys! Solid!
thanks! the most professional looking DIY dish on youtube! nice size too.
this should be gold cuz if you dont know this, hes an amazing music photography and i follow his blogs and stuff and you should too, just google his name, and its sick, awesome shots,

@wladius It would most likely give a hotter, more contrasty look. You'd have to make sure the spray paint was neutral as well.
Hey guys! Just wanted to thank you for this video. I was able to make one almost just like yours!
Efficiency and softness of light are different things. Fine tuning the reflector for maximum output may result in artifacts, but it depends on what the desired result is.
Great job! Brilliant design.
You should have tested it.. I wanted to see it on!
Whats the difference from a silver Beauty Dish to a White Beauty Dish? would you recomend any fabric DIY to do a diffuser please?
Many thanks Todd
Brilliantly explained thanks
looks good, how do the shots look?
GREAT JOB YOU GUYS!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Well, all I can say is. . . Thanks for this tutorial. I must now make one.

Very nice, looks almost pro with the paint finish
Great presentation and instructions...Thanks!
Excellent DIY! My only concern is .. What if I wanted to add a grid onto it?
This is awesome!
Thanks so much for posting this.
Great diy video.
Hey I love this tut can you guys tell me where I can buy the parts that you guys bought? I am having the most trouble finding the large mixing bowl. I really want like a 27 inch or so
Great work guys, would have loved to see an example ;)

Thank you! This looks like a do able project!
thanks for this! I managed to built one myself but the problem I encountered is if I slot in the flash radio transreceiver below the flash, due to its length, I have to move the flash back, hence the flash can;t attach to the bowl.. :-/
That sounds like a good mod. Thanks for the feedback.
guys, make more tutorials! you are cool and very helpfull
This is absolutely cool guys

Conversely, if I used the 20qt mixing bowl, would I need to get a 10" pizza pan instead or just stay with the 8"?
Sick!! Nice Project, Todd... nice to see you here on UA-cam :) Never saw your videos... anyway, I subscribed, so now you have to upload more tutorials LOL

what if you used a chrome or silver spray for the inside? How it would affect the results?
what do you think about using a mirror for the reflector.( the on that covers the flash)
Great work thanks for sharing
I made this and it rocks !!!

What kind of spray paint did you guys use for this?
Excellent ! Thank you...
great job
hi I love your approach !!! Is there a cheap bracket for Profoto like the lastolite you use??? Best+++ OKAN
great vid but....what do you do when you want a grid for this particular dish? :O
A White Diffuser is easy to make but wondering what you would do for a grid?
..."Bump!"...
+Kai Chinn I think when you want a grid you will just end up having to buy a new dish that comes with one. :-/
thanks for the reply! :)
+Joe's Photo & Video Channel Can't one be made out of black felt or something?
Paresh Pandit A grid? The grids for beauty dishes are normally plastic and snap on and off the dish. Would be no practical way to attach a home made one out of cloth-ish material.

I love this. However, what bracket would you recommend to place this on my strobe that has With Standard size universal speed mounts?
Hey Todd, can you send me diameter of the bowl, because on U.K. Ebay ther is no bowls in Qt but on inch, so please give me diameters of the bowl, thank you

Can possible same beauty dish have an option of studio strobe light attachment either can be use for speed flash light or studio strobe light for home studio.
can you make a tutorial that uses bowens mounting?
Some of the DIY add convex mirror ? any reason for this one not to have a convex mirror ?
is it matte? or glow?
Great Job!!!!
WOW!
Awesome!
Todd este efeito esfumaçado nas fotos que procede aquele profissionalismo dos fotógrafos?? Obrigado
Brilliant
surely the first reflector (plate) is upside down making a light trap, and it needs to be at the ''focal point'' of the main dish/reflector ???
GOOD VIDEO !
This is great!! DIMS Do it myself!
Thanks for the comment. Just updated the description with a link to sample images shot with this beauty dish.

Strawberryxoxo90 yes baby......just buy instead of struggle
expensive? your getting away with murder here trust me
By far the most expensive and time-consuming DIY beauty dish I've seen
I could of sworn back in the 90s this was called the pinoy city special
dope. but kinda lazy to make one. sell some :)
I'm gonna say it....
Difficulty Level: ASIAN.
hahaha
Why don't you just sell it to people it would be easier for them.
IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO THIS? you might just go ahead and BUY a pro one lloll
not worth of work that doesnt include photography skill :-)
Awesome
