So beautiful this work. Thank you for proving I only need 3 hammers, 26 minutes, 44 seconds and a dream... And a shop, and 2 hours and a week and years of experience. Seriously amazing work I am blessed to witness and inspired!
seeing this amazing video for the first time in 2023! I've been wanting to make a hand pan for a while and i have no idea how to start and what tools i need for the process, now you gave me an idea of how to start and a ton of inspiration, thank you!!
Hello Colin, thank you so much for this video, you know, like a lot of people in this time, i took the hammer too i don't know why haha, maybe because this musical instrument fascinated me and took a real part in my life. I just want to say one day "yeah i made this", and to hear of it love and joy vibrations :) My process is all made by hand, sinking, shaping, tuning etc with a few hammers and tools, I'm there only at the very beginning of this long learning too. And finally I saw this video just like a wink or a tribute to people like me hahaha You gave me some strenght and bravery, thank you Colin!
What an amazing idea! It was a delight watching the whole process the way it used to be done at some point, and the finished instrument looks and sounds beautiful! Love the way you connect with your work. Thank you. :)
Yes, three hammers and a computer with a spreadsheet and electronic gear to help you tune. After that it is gravy time and sounds just lovely. I hope you make many more things.
Wonderful video. I've been thinking about making one of these for quite a while, and now finally I have a somewhat decent workshop. Perhaps this winter is the time to take the plunge! Thank you so much for taking the time to really show off how the instrument sounds in the end of the video. There are so many instrument build videos that only focus on the build and not showing what the instrument is capable of sound wise! :)
Phenomenal, Colin. As someone who loves music, has fallen in love with handpans, and loves making things with my hands - and I have very little of these activities present in my life right now - this is a great inspiration. I hope to make a handpan(s) someday also. Beautiful work, beautiful craftsmanship, thanks so much for sharing.
Hello to the best! I play RAV VAST. Have a dream about a hang pan. Expensive .... Hands are. Both right :). You are inspired to make your own. Thank you and good luck everywhere! Andris
I never saw this video before; I was in hospital, incommunicada, when you made this video. Oh, Kari; love the logo, and Judith; love the background music. I just watched this for the first time, and Jimmy James, I love your hammers; I could not wield them! It was fun to watch Colin do it, though. Colin, I love your sense of humor, and how you express it in the video.
Harper's Handpans any chance you're close to florida? i'm a blacksmith and work at a steel factory, we have everything up to plasma table and a powder coating division, i would bet my lefty my boss the owner would produce and colorize some
Watching your video was a real pleasure !! so nice idea to go back to the old school process , results an incredible instrument , you're a great maker. huge thanks and respect.
Excellent piece of work. Where did you get that massive flange to fit your oil barrel? That might help me a lot for a wind sculpture I'm planning. And then I might try to make me one of these beautiful beasties.
BEAUTIFULL WORK!! a thing, to mark the position of the ding on the opposite side,we can just use magnets of fine sandpaper, placing the magnets as a marker, and the boar dust made from sandpaper as opposite marker. :) in this way you are not obliged to keep the centered ding.
Hey Colin, great idea, great challenge for the physics and a job that you can feel in your bones for sure. The more it makes visible the effort of you maker guys. Many blessings and lots of good energy to you and all the challenging guys. Love your instruments
What a challenge! And yet wow, such a nice instrument, which proves how good is your experience. ☺️👌🏼🎶 Super interesting video and input. Thanks Colin! 🙂
Hello, congratulations on your excellent work. Can you tell me what ring measures to hold the handpan and how the dimples of each note are made, can you inform me too, please? Thank you very much
Awesome video Colin. Since I do not have the monetary resources to purchase one of these hypnotic instruments. So I believe it would be cheaper to make. Could you please provide a website on where to purchase the hammers you used (sinking hammers). I check Jimmy’s House of Hammers FB page and no post has been made in about 4 years. At least that I can see. Please help. Thank you.
Kudos! As a musician and metal worker... I was rapt watching the entire process. The only detail I see wasn't clearly shown was the making of the circles around the dimples... Is this where the magic mojo is intallled? I would like to try this sometime... just what I need... another project.
Hello Colin. I loved this video. I was thinking about to build an handpan since the last year and it really inspired me... I just have a question for you and it's about notes... How could I know the diameter of each note? Are there some printable templates or any tables with diameters? Thank you for your answer. :D
You, my friend, are a true artist! I love the work that you put into everything that you do. This was a great video, and such an amazing challenge. I hope that other makers take up the challenge! J x
Thank you for creating this great video! Great craftmanship and you are a good player too! I was wondering if a piece of leather on your hammers would give a smoother surface? Also is there a list with most notes and their dimensions? And i am a fan of soft edges and small dimples (original PA style). Do you have any say about this soundwise? Lots of succes on your pan building journey! Sebastian
Hi Colin ! Thanks a lot for this inspiring video ! It is a real source of knowledge. The way you do it seems so simple. Yet it is not. It rekindle my envy to jump into crafting! I'm about to try the experience by hand and I'm wondering about the dimples, how to find oval metal tubes to do them ? I gathered all sizes in circular metal bars, did you crooked them in some way to obtain the one you use ? Thanks !
Wow, thank you so much for this video! It is very interesting for me to see this complete process. Wish I could try it too, even if i know it is really hard work. Amazing how a flat sheet of metal become a beautiful instrument! And yes, i remember this video of the steelpan you were talking about. Very inspiring! Nice logo!
First of all, Big Thank You, because you precision or detail in the process to make a hand pan. As you shown in the excel sheet about the measurements of the tone fields, in case that you want to make another scale, which formula you uses? Are the same size the ding for default? Im actually trying to one by myself. Tahnks in advance, and apreciate your work and your advises!
O my gosh, I want one so bad!!! Did you mention actual measurements somewhere?? I don't know a lot about music, I just want to be able to make SOME sort of pretty tune.
Colin great video i love metal work being a millwright for a great amount of my life and i love drums as a percussionist since 6th grade. I was curious how thick is the metal that you start out with usually and how much does the thickness change the tone?
hi my friend ry for this awsome video . how xan i find that rings ?? or how can i make can u give theyr sizes??( rings mean u use them to build tunes )
Thank you for that ! With a friend, we are going to soon dip in the singing steel artwork and your video is really inspiring. On top of that pile of motivation, you gave us some precious advices and tricks where informations are a little difficult to find. So again, and i'm going quote @atadakimasu : You gave me some strength and bravery, thank you Colin !
wow man this is awesome...… what thickness is the sheet that youre using here and does it matter what the metal is. ive wanted one of these since I saw them a few years back but I read how expensive they were and lost all hope.... but with your video it made me a little more confident that I could do it at home
Hi Colin Foulke, it's a great job! I want to ask, what are the programs you use to see the tuning of your Hang? (minute 12:28) I find your SC5000 impressive. Thank you very much for the video
Thank you for sharing this, great video! Can you please bring back a celtic minor or witching hour? I'm dying to own one of your witching hour drums...
Amazing work Colin. Im in love with this process. Can you tell me which software you use for tuning? Im in way of making handpans too. Thanks for inspiration ✌🏼👏

Amazing work! It sounds so beautifully! I dare to say even better than machinemade ones. 🙂
I love that you hand hammered the whole thing! I wonder what brass or copper shell would sound like.
Thank you! Brass and copper so far haven't been a successful way to make a handpan, but who knows?!
well, it would be nice to explain also the function of the dimples for the sounds resp. the sound waves to be produced...
I wish i could build one. nice one colin
