Fun fact: I got a lead role in the Broadway musical “Fame” because at my callback I learned the entire song (that I never heard prior to that day) in 10 minutes. These singers( almost all famous ones) work with one or more professional song writer. If you check for the song -writer of all popular songs you ll see none of them are written by one person alone. I think contribution of the singers to the song is usually minimum. But because it is cool to write your own songs now they always include the singer as a song -writer. They dont want to advertise the other real song-writer much cause no one cares about them. We dont know how much of the music or lyrics really belong to the singer. We ll never know because the real song -writer, the professional one has an agreement with the label so they would never tell us, “ oh! btw I wrote 95 percent of the song “ the singer only added one or two things or changed them a bit or something like that . I think it is time for us, the audience to wake up and see the facts. We should start to acknowledge and appreciate the real song writers. They are the real musicians. I really feel sorry for them that they are so underrated.

It's called compression. It brings the highs and lows of the song to the same range so the "whispers" don't sound as quiet as they do in reality.
