What really brings Kalmaar stand out is his animation. There's something so captivating and expressive about the way he moves. That coupled with the magnificent voice acting and you have a truly powerful presence that's hard to capture within the confines of lego. It's not just that he looks cool, it's that there's so much character within his animation alone. Characterized with Ninjago's skillful villain writing and you get a very delightful, entertaining character!
Absolutely! Ninjago has come such a long way with both writing and animation, it’s super cool to see. And I love how overly-expressive he is when he’s lying, very theatrical and goofy. Shame he had to become murderer - he really could’ve made a career in theater! xD
Okay this is GREAT video because it finally put into words WHY I love this season so much, and made me realize why I loved a really specific scene in the finale: So, as Nya pulls back the sea and defloods Ninjago, there’s a shot of a mostly empty street. And in the remaining water from the battle, lies two objects: Nya’s spear and Kalmaar’s crown. Both of them discarded, left as simple reminders that there’s no one left to take them back. Neither of them *survived.* And I think that’s one of my favourite things about Seabound; it isn’t a happy ending. Nya’s story isn’t “she saved that day! yay! She completed her character arc and found her best self with healthy coping mechanisms and a happily ever after with her family!” It’s far closer to a tragedy. And that’s just a level of story telling that I never expect from this show yet they keep blindsiding me with.!
YESS that shot with the crown and the spear is so cool ! I’m especially interested by the crown’s symbolism cause one thing I noticed was that it didn’t fit Kalmaar quite right. There are a few times where he gets startled and it falls off and he readjusts it,, like it could represent how he’s not actually meant to be a leader. Man I love this season sm
Kalmaar is basically if Squidward had a Hitler complex. As with you and Tommy Andreason, Kalmaar is my favorite (WildBrain Era) villain by a long shot, coming with exceptional voice acting and a threatening yet hilarious personality. I appreciate the depth you went into comparing his motives to Nya's and exploring things along the tragedy route. It certainly makes things more impactful at the end with Kalmaar getting killed by Wojira and Nya becoming one with water (until the end of "A Painful Promise"). It's definitely a unique take on the typical saga post-Oni Trilogy, and it makes for some dramatic storytelling looking back (as well as emotional).
I FINALLY FOUND SOMEONE WHO LOVES SEABOUND AS MUCH AS ME. Seabound by itself is an amazing season, i really enjoyed watching it especially when i saw the ocean the visuals were just perfection
Something I noticed is that nya fears/ struggles follow one another and make sense when you look at her life Her fear of failure makes sense when you realize that nya never had the chance to learn from failings she and kai were own their own when she and kai failed it had bigger consequences and no one told them that fine Nya fear of being normal comes in that she may have believed that her and kai "being normal " caused their parents to leave and going back to her fear of failure failing is normal and nya doesn't want to fail Her wanting to be in control all the time comes from her growing up she couldn't control her life when she grew up and now she can she gets really obsessive about being in control and going back to her fear of failure if you are in control all the time you can't fail Now nya self blaming I can see coming in from again her childhood if nya did think her parents left her and kai because they weren't special I can see her blaming herself for it and since she never had someone to tell her other wise I wouldn't t be surprise if she thought this till she learns the truth and then nya also always had/ put a lot of pressure on herself and when you do that you tend to take other people problems and put the blame on yourself
This makes a lot of sense. Nya was only 3 when her parents left (and Kai was no older than 5 or 6), that has to be super confusing and traumatizing, never knowing why they left or if they were to blame. I also get the feeling that Kai took it upon himself to do most of the caretaking, considering he’s the oldest and Nya’s safety is constantly his top priority. When you think about it, from Nya’s POV it might feel like her whole family gave everything up for her (Ray and Maya enslaved, Kai looking after her at the expense of his own childhood). Then in Seabound she gives everything up to save them Kinda sad when you think about it this way
Kalmaar is pretty much Pythor 2.0, but that doesn't mean Kalmaar is just a copycat, that's why Eye said 'pretty puch' instead of 'totally'. Eye love both of them.
I love Seabound sm, especially after I began to think Ninjago was having a downfall. After the Oni trilogy, the storytelling got a little forced and slow, until Seabound came back around and redeemed the whole series. It may just be one of my favourite seasons to date, and I can only hope Ninjago United will continue it on
I know this is off topic, but ninjago really is just an awful place to live. For starters, Ninjago was founded on conflict from the very beginning with Wojira and the Oni/Dragons. The first spinjitzu master already created enemies that would only bite ninjago in the dumpy later on. Then, we see conflicts with the serpentine and humans early on with the eventual truce being very fragile (then Wu created an enemy out of Aspheera). The Great Devourer bit Garmadon, only creating a severe amount of chain reactions (i.g. The letter, the pilot, abandoning Lloyd etc) The serpentine wars happened and then the serpentine were bitter again. Then Lloyd released the serpentine, causing Harumi’s parens’ deaths, causing the stone army to reawaken, and basically everything in the entire show + the negative energy that came to a head in Crystallized. Then let’s not forget Wu’s falling out with Morro and the time twins. Then to wrap it up, bad things are constantly happening to ninjago in general (can’t be good for the economy). Escaping ninjago is not only dangerous but very tricky for the average ninjago citizen because there’s only ninjago, the dark island, and the other realms that are very arduous to get to if you don’t have connections. I’d hate to live in ninjago tbh. You’re probably safer in the trenches with a wad of cash sticking out of your pocket. At least supernatural beings aren’t bodying you.
Nya didn't die though. She became one with the ocean, and though I guess you could argue that basically means she died, after that final scene with Nya playing with the whales, I don't feel that way. She was very happy where she was. In that state, that was where she wanted to be. I would've almost rathered she stayed the ocean, though I would be sad she never married Jay. I guess it would've followed Nya's words from Skybound though... "I guess the best love stories always do end in tragedy." 😏
amazing video !! 👏👏👏 I'm so glad i ran into your channel 🔥🔥 (I'm not emo) i love it when Ninjago gets dark cuz the things that the characters go through is relatable to me most of the time. like how Cole lost his close loved one, just Lloyd in general in the Oni trilogy, (some people say that he got too serious, but i think that character development worked so well) and how Nya felt in Seabound. oof you're channel's too good ! def subscribed 😁💚
Thank you, this means a lot to me! Yess, I love when the show gets darker, that’s usually when the writing is at its best. And I get what you mean about relatability (I’m basically a combination of Cole and Nya lol)
Just found your channel today and I’m binge watching all of these lol It’s actually shocking how underrated you are because you make a lot of great character analyses.
I Think you’re misinterpreting Nya’s ending. She doesn’t double down on her fears, (her fear of not being in control, her fear of being defined by someone else.) Instead she realises (at least unconsciously) that those things don’t really matter, they’re illusions. In reality the people she loves are much more important to her. By the end she doesn’t choose to remove herself from others and seek power, instead she commits her entire self to those that she loves. She chooses to save them at the cost of herself. Remember Benthomaar told her that Nyad LOST herself. This is one of, if not Nya’s greatest fear: to loose control of herself, to loose her own identity and consciousness. But she does it anyway, because she loves Jay and she wants to save him Anyway, I didn’t write this long comment just to tell you that your analysis is wrong. I just think it’s interesting to have these conversations and I wanted to share my thoughts. I loved your Skybound video, and your video on the love triangle was absolutely amazing. Keep up the good work :D
Aw thanks for the kind words!! ^^ I love hearing others’ interpretations, especially around Seabound/Nya since there are tons of layers to explore. You raise a lot of great points - honestly I agree with everything you said lol. What I’ll add is the severity Nya’s willing to go to to protect people. Like you said, she saved them at the cost of herself- which is a super high price. It feels like it sheds light on the blame/responsibility she casts on herself (which we saw examples of pre-seabound) - so while choosing to save her friends was definitely a turning point for her, I don’t know if it was necessarily a good thing? (Within the context of her as a person - the storyline itself was brilliant). Her whole arc is a double-edged sword - she realizes what she truly values, but it’s too late because (like Kalmaar) she’s already on this downward path and can’t fully turn around, so she does the next best thing and sacrifices herself. Feel free to add on again if you like lol - this is all just my own speculation at the end of the day 😅 You have a good day my friend :)
@@DexilejJ I agree that her arc doesn't end in a particularly postive or triumphant way. I do believe that she overcame one of her greatest fears and committed herself fully to her loved ones - something that she has struggled to do. But as you pointed out, she does have a tendency to blame herself for things that are out of her control, (this definitely has something to do with her being abandoned by her parents). She does not reach out for help, ever. She thinks that she has to do everything by herself, that she has to carry all the weight of her problems by herself. It's not a healthy mindset. The question becomes: was there another option for her? If there was, then I agree with you, she destroyed herself because of her own unhealthy mindset (a mindset which is most likely a consequence of trauma) I can't really determine wether or not there was another option... Jay might have died.. and I don't know how they would have defeated Wojira
And of course it’s not a happy ending. A happy ending would’ve been her living a normal, peaceful and fulfilling life. She would marry Jay and go on to have children of her own, passing on her powers and their legacy. She would learn to let go and ask others for help. She would learn to depend on other people, learn to fail and to accept normality and imperfections. But she does not get that life. She is forced to sacrifice herself if she wants to safe her family. And that is tragic, it’s loss
Also also Character development does not mean resolving all issues or development on all fronts. While she does come to terms with her individuality vs her relationships, and she does learn to let go of control, in one way She does not learn to stop: - Putting pressure on herself - Taking responsibility for everything/Blaming herself for everything And she does not learn to show vulnerability and ask for help Still, she does overcome one of her greatest fears (mentioned above) and I think that is worth an applause
I am so sorry for this inconvenient question, but no matter how hard I try, I cannot determine whether you are a boy or a girl, can you tell me? Don't worry, I'm not a sexist, whatever gender you are I am so fine with it, I am just asking out of curiosity :D
I mostly agree with this video, but the only thing that I disagree with is Kalmaar’s motivation. He doesn’t really seem to care about proving himself, but more about expanding Merlopia
I feel like Kalmaar and Pythor would hate each other😂
Pfft yeah probably
The British snakes
They would either hate each other or drink tea every other Sunday together

According to Giles Panton, Kalmaar would view Pythor as inferior.

Her fear of failure makes sense when you realize that nya never had the chance to learn from failings she and kai were own their own when she and kai failed it had bigger consequences and no one told them that fine
Nya fear of being normal comes in that she may have believed that her and kai "being normal " caused their parents to leave and going back to her fear of failure failing is normal and nya doesn't want to fail
Her wanting to be in control all the time comes from her growing up she couldn't control her life when she grew up and now she can she gets really obsessive about being in control and going back to her fear of failure if you are in control all the time you can't fail
Now nya self blaming I can see coming in from again her childhood if nya did think her parents left her and kai because they weren't special I can see her blaming herself for it and since she never had someone to tell her other wise I wouldn't t be surprise if she thought this till she learns the truth and then nya also always had/ put a lot of pressure on herself and when you do that you tend to take other people problems and put the blame on yourself
