- Heading out on the Hatfield McCoy trails In Southern West Virginia (Buffalo Mountain) to do some fossil hunting near some old auger mines.
What to look for, how to find them, and what to do when you do find them...
I would never ever want to leave that place!!!!!! How lucky you are to be able to go there almost anytime. Wow!!!!
It's awesome thanks
I live in Huntington WV. My parents have fossils of ferns on the part of a hill they own. I love to dig them out. They are in sandstone and very delicate.
That's cool! How big are they? I only ever found tiny snail fossils whatever they are.
I love you laugh. Fossils too. My dad grew up in WV. I have lots of family I just love. Visit sometimes.
Wow all sorts. Rock plus mud fossils. Wow, everything.
Great job, I could see everything you were talking about. The tree is awesome. Thank you for taking us along.👏🙋♀️👍
Thank you so much 😊
🤣😁🙃Now you have done it🙃🙃👀👀. You Have woken my Mother and Father. They both loved rock hunting. Their house had rock wall to wall. All kinds you name it they had them. Ok so if you Starte seeing thing on the trail it maybe both of them. Its Ok Their name was Glenn, Carlen Just send them back to the Military Grave sight here in Mobile. I put them back in the ground. Man the hour you must put in putting together these Vido. Great job
Haha thank you 🙏
This is so cool.
Love seeing videos of people exploring our lovely state for fossils.
I go out in the woods behind our house and am always looking for something along streams and creeks. I’ll find a lot of shell fossils, but nothing major yet. Just small things, even though 300 million year old fossils are pretty cool alone. However, just being outdoors here is something that is a treat in itself.
Really enjoyed the video. It was interesting and fun
Glad you enjoyed it!
The fossil at 1749 really reminds me of scales. I'd love to see a picture of the dragonfly. If you ever find another please take a pic. A picture video featuring some of the better fossils would be awesome. I just moved to Southern wv. First time I've been in a city setting. Appreciate your vid. Very cool
Love your channel, and yesterday I got a huge surprise watching this one. I also watch Mudfossel University, and I have learned from him a few things about rocks. I sent him this video, I noticed a woman's private parts. Also the tube with the tree has got my thinking cap on. Plus the scales, look just like scales....thanks for sharing
Thank you 🙂 I'm glad you enjoyed it
Most of the scaly looking stuff you found is isn't critters, it's fossilized bark. Calamities, lepidodendron, and a couple of others I can't think of off the top of my head, etc. The little round bumps were little branch buds, sort of. A good fossil book (I really like the Audubon Fossil guide) will help you a lot. And a good geologist's or masonry hammer will help a lot too! Cool vid!
I would love to go on a trip like that finding all sort of things from the past please keep these type of videos coming God bless stay safe
Thank you!
Thank you Leo, Much love to you both 😊
You are so welcome
Up here when I worked in the copper mines of Michigan the worst thing we had to worry about was what was known as the ash bed collapse, that is when you turn rolled into volcanic ash that had not turned into rock it would collapse at one lick. If you was working in the lower levels you always had to worry about rock falls. Even sometimes we would run into a slate bed that would collapse on the miners. Now and in the Coeur d'Alene Idaho working at Kellogg and the Sunshine mine rockfall was always a very dangerous possibility unless you got in there and roof bolted the ceiling and the ribs very good. And the second worry we had out there if you worked on the very lower levels what miners call a bump that is an underground Earth tremor which could result in the ceiling collapsing but in many cases it was the floor of the mine that came up and hit the ceiling, if I remember correctly the Atlantic mine in Michigan's upper peninsula internally from a series of bumps, fortunately it occurred on the weekend and there was no one underground it just collapsed in on itself kind of like you grab a milk carton in your hand which would represent the tunnel going down to the work part of the slowly collapsing on itself from all four sides. The other has heard that they faced up here especially in the iron mines was having underground water rushing into the mine and grounding everyone. The famous Barnes and heckled mine fell victim to this, when a shaft was cut under a river and it collapsed into the work area of the mine and killed everyone. Similar incident occurred in Minnesota at mine,
Cool beans 😎 thanks for sharing
I’m a rock hound and I love looking for fossils. Is this a place that just the locals know about or is their like a little fossil hunting place where you can go to? Like what town is it in? I would love to go fossil hunting there. I haven’t been looking for years. Lease do more videos like this. Just subscribed. Great video.❤
Williamson WV is the town , and ty!
That fossil at 17:16 looked like the scales of some creature. On second thought as you showed that tree up close and the othe similar "Leaves," maybe those are the leaves of that tree
Very interesting video Leo, thank you very much. I did not know that you
were into this. Those fossils were COOL! You make a very good tour guide. I have two questions if I may?
Those auger mines are interesting, is entry into them forbidden? Also, where did you find that " fossil " on the back of your ATV?
Trail riders check them out all the time, and he came from amazon... lol
@@thehillbillyfiles Thank you very much for getting back to me. Have a great day.
My mistake, the skeleton came from home depot lol
@@thehillbillyfiles No problem, does the skeleton have
a name?
Mr boney, hes on a lot of stuff on our facebook trail 10 tours
Never thought of it, but makes sense that a lot of fossils would be near coal seams bc it’s formed from plants.
Leo looks very Sharp.
You should invite PALEOCHRIS and WILDKYLE there and do a video
That would be awesome
Omg, I would love to do this. If you sell fossils, I would really love to purchase some from you.
I plan to go back soon
Could those rounded bubble stones be petrified eggs? Just a thought. 👍
Hmm 🤔 interesting idea
What are the painted numbers for?
Just when I think there is nothing new to show me ya’ll show me fossils!!!!🌴🪴
😂
Do you know anything about the old Berwind coal mine . My mother was born in a coal camp there. Trying to find out about it
Burnwell? Maybe? Or is it Berwind?
@@thehillbillyfiles it’s Berwind south of war
Oh o k, yes that's not a area we are too familiar with. I'll see what I can find out though
@@thehillbillyfiles thank you brother
