Portnoy is the greatest drummer in my book - not just for his skill - but also for his creativity compositionally. He can play complex patterns - but they always serve the song. The hi-hat, splash, ride accents on 'These Walls' just floors me every time I hear it. I just can't think of a drummer that I love more.
That's funny you mention instrumedly when portnoy played with DT for modern drummer that was my first introduction to Mr Mike portnoy and DT and I've been a fan ever since amazing drummer 🤘🤘🤘🤘
@@johno378 I know right, last expected news I ever expected, though bittersweet too, since I hope Mangini left on his own amicably and they didn't simply fire him to bring Portnoy back; though this may not be the case as only a few weeks/months ago they adamant about keeping Mangini and fans needing to accept it and move forward. Hopefully though this continues their revitalization of creativity since Distance, John's solo album, LTE 3, and View.
this is great he wants to play with this B league former band, but I will give Portnoy credit, he did manage to have awareness to put Blizzard of ozz and Diary of Madman in his top ten greatest albums, realizing you cannot pick one without the other.
This interview aged well :)
Haha. I’m not going to say I “called it” early, but I think some form of reunion was always on the cards.
Timestamp please :)
One of my favorite recent Portnoy interviews! He certainly is one of the hardest working musicians I’ve ever seen and his discography is amazing!
MIKE IS BACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK🤘
Dude and now he is back in the band !!!!!! What a trip, I am back in the right universe again finally!
My compliments for this interview. Finally a different approach than normally. Even Mike was surprised by some questions.👍🏼
The teaser question gives me chills… now… after we all got the news… 😅
You and me both..! Thanks for stopping by!
Welcome back to Dream Theater Mike, Missed you bro!! BUT big shout out to Mike Mangini for working hard for 13 years!

His stuff is just so fun and 'quotable' if you get my meaning.
Love old school dream theater!
Dude if Portnoy did a tour/show with DT again, I would drop everything to go.
Looks like you’re about to drop everything! 🤘🏻
you said it lol you gotta drop everything and go!!!
Great interview, mike always gives great insight
21:40 Portnoy already hinted a little bit that he's going to back in DT
The question about re joining DT for 40th anniversary… and there’s me today waiting with 2 tickets for October gig !😁😁😁
His new band, dream dogs and winery theater. Glad he's back home in dream theater!
Great interview, aged like wine 🍷
Into the Blue is also one of my favorites of TA.
Dream Theaters writing suffered greatly after Portnoy left-not their fault just shows how important he was as far as the creativity goes.

Fantastic Ollie x
21:48 Oh boy...
I wonder if the deal was done at this time
Id love to see them play at least once with him again. They should 12 step suite for sure as well if they ever play with him.
Well, we have good news for you

Well we know whats next as of a couple days ago!
I'd like to thank Dream Theater for losing marks in my English GCSE's for spelling Theater incorrectly
All time favorite musician, my opinion.
SDOIT and Save Me all the way for me too \m/
Is it weird that “Sacrificed Sons” is the DT song that made me say, “Who the fuck are these guys?!”
Is that in a good way or not?
bring back portnoy for a tour also send an invite to Kevin Moore
😂😂😂😂😂
Kevin would never say yes, unfortunately
@@TheDarkEternalKnight07 Kevin, such a talent but man a downer ehh?
@@sean8470 Kevin was invited in 2004 for the 15th Anniversary of When Dream and Day Unite. He never replied. And I don't think he would nowadays.
@@TheDarkEternalKnight07 thx I still listen and support DT I think dramatic turn of events was their best work in past 10 years
Mike Port O John
I got to play with Mike once in 1998: ua-cam.com/video/jiH1Lr2caCc/v-deo.html. (I'm still waiting for my royalties! 😆🤣😆)

Oh god not here too
how will he/ they (dream theater) be remembered in 100 yrs.......the Mozarts , Bachs , Tchaikovski's of this time.......
Well, let's not get ridiculous.
Who else will be then..tbh, these guys have a shit load.more talent than those old composers
@@goonerross4834 You're delusional if you genuinely believe that.
In fact, one could argue, all day....that they'll be better remembered as muso's....if not them....who???? @@Progger11
