It was not until the 17th century and the reign of Louis XIV that this project came to fruition. It will be the Sun King's biggest construction site after Versailles and its digging will require all kinds of technological feats to span hills and rivers.
The Canal du Midi was completed in 1681 after 12 years of work. Today listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the oldest canals in Europe still in operation.

I traversed the Midi back in the 70s during my days operating as a yacht delivery skipper, a time when the 'peniche' (barges) were still operating, the depth was 2 mtrs, but only in the center which was also the draft of the yacht I was bringing through, needless to say I had to give way to the peniche. I worked out a way of waiting until they were quite close coming from the opposite direction, at which time I would put the helm over and drive the yacht up onto the mud, as the peniche passed, its stern wave would lift the yacht for a few critical moments allowing me to put the helm hard over and the engine into high power allowing me to regain the center of the canal. Sadly today, now silted up, the depth is only approximately 1 mtr in many parts, the peniche now long gone. Needless to say, I had no idea that the canal incorporated such wonderful technical achievements, it would have made the experience so much more fascinating. Thank you for this.

I was taken to see the _Ecluses de Fonseranes_ by my dad and stepmum, about 20 years ago. (I was like 45 at the time, they were very proud of their new holiday home near Beziers and took me all over the Languedoc while I was visiting.) I didn't know much about the Canal du Midi at the time, and in particular I did not know that these works pre-dated the canal system of England by some 100-150 years. There's a statue of Riquet in central Beziers. What a remarkable man he must have been. Isembard Kingdom Brunel, but 200 years earlier.
Both my dad and stepmum are now dead, so seeing these pictures of the Ecluses was poignant.

Why have we never heard of this before? People are too distracted by the gaudy wonders of Versailles, to pay attention to this marvel of engineering and pre-industrial labor? I am astonished.

@@moimoi2379 ah ça ce n'est pas vrai, pour le coup....on possède même des miniatures d'époque montrant des sculptrices de statues présentes sur des chantiers de cathédrales...en Espagne années 60 j'ai vu des femmes transporter des pierres dans des corbeilles sur leur tête pour déblayer le site futur des premières autoroutes espagnoles.... idem en Inde....idem en Afrique où elles construisent leurs maisons en terre et les peignent à l'intérieur et où c'est très beau et très frais en été et ici apparemment avec les paysans pour tout ces travaux qui demandaient une grande quantité de bras de tourte sorte....d'autre part, cher ami, si même les enfants travaillaient.... Personne n'a dit qu'elles étaient ingénieurs ! Elles n'allaient même pas à l'école ! Faut-il être benêt pour ne pas comprendre le sens des choses....c'est tout ce qui vous à frappé dans ce beau reportage ? 😂😂 et quand bien même elles n'auraient rien fait, chose anti-historique, une femme a fait Riquet ! et même Louis XIV ! ah tiens !

I knew about Marquis de Lafayette, and the role france played in the american revolution, but not this.
Not Only Lafayette, but also the marquis de Moncalm and the comte de Rochambeau helped America to get rid of british and of course the french war ships and the french land troopers, we never see them in the Hollywood movies, only french bashing (.../...)

I consider the american war of independence to be a small part of the first ever world war because England and France were in conflict around the globe at the time.

Wonderful documentary. We’ve ridden the entire length on bicyle a couple of years ago and I wish I had seen this beforehand.
C'est génial ! Bravo à ces merveilleux architectes, ingénieurs et constructeurs. C'est une des merveilles du monde qui n'a pas d'équivalent. Le canal de Panama construit 250 ans plus tard se fera avec des moyens techniques beaucoup plus puissants.
N'oubliez-pas le canal de Suez. Il a fini 170 ans plus tard.

A l'époque quel rêve, quelle compétence, quelle passion....mes parents l'ont navigué depuis Toulouse jusqu'à Sete avec un petit hors bord....quelques écluses à la main ..dans les années 60/70 ...aujourd'hui peut-être plus... une superbe réalisation..❤

je suis de bessan juste a cote d agde, ils ont mis un an a construire l ecluse en 1 an à l' époque, aujourd hui ils ont mis 3 ans a refaire la route de la voie ferrée 😂😂😂

Fun fact, Toulouse erected a statue of Pierre Paul Riquet in one of the most central place of the city. As the canal brought prosperity to the city.

Très beau documentaire, juste envie d'y passer en bateau ou en vélo. Comme la SNCF, EDF(ENEDIS) et VNF sont des machines d'utilité publique qui entretiennent silencieusement un patrimoine magnifique. Merci.

Bel ouvrage qu'il faudrait penser à remettre en service pour divers transports de marchandises, lorsqu'on ne pourra plus faire rouler des camions dans 50 ou 60 ans .😮

Dans les années 90, j'ai eu le plaisir d'explorer une partie de ce canal à vélo, lorsque je campais de Madrid au Languedoc. Je ne pense pas avoir déjà connu un tel bonheur. // En los años noventa tuve el placer de recorrer parte de este canal en bicicleta, cuando me fuí desde Madrid a Languedoc de camping. Creo que nunca he vuelto a experimentar tanta felicidad.

C'est la preuve que l'on savait construire et durer tout en y ajoutant une foi immense dans l'excellence, la maitrise, la réflexion, le soin apporté.
Qu'en sera-t-il pour Beaubourg, la Défense et autres déchets urban inutiles, dispendieux, lamentablement laids et sans âmes ?
Jadis, on construisait des châteaux aujourd’hui : on déverse des pistes cyclables partout tel du pesticide balancé à tout va . ( je grossi délibérément le trait ) mais c'est un constat que j’observe.
Mon pays est devenu une benne à ordure, un égout à ciel ouvert alors qu'avant, c'était un éclat de beauté, un écrin d'excellence et d'intelligence. L'accomplissement de l'Homme dans ce qu'il savait faire de plus beaux et de plus harmonieux dans l'équilibre et l'audace technique et scientifique.

For thousands of years until approximately 1900, constructions were built with simple, natural materials such as stone and lime mortar which harmonised and aged with the environment. 80% or more of the populations were connected with agriculture/land directly or indirectly. Since 2004 more than 50% of the world’s 8bn population are now urban and completely disconnected from the natural world; living in concrete and tarmac; in buildings made from carcinogenic products of the petrochemical industry.
Between1650-1900 and particularly during the years of enlightenment in Europe, governments, royalty and intellectuals embraced and encouraged science, innovation and engineering, setting high standards and goals; these were the 10% that motivated.
However today as seen in the UK especially in the “public sector” administrators have no standards; they let infrastructure deteriorate and just manage decline whilst wasting vast sums of taxpayer’s money on bureaucracy believing this is their only purpose, other than having a lifetime living off the public purse.
Probably the greatest achievement in the 19 century was the extraordinary engineering accomplishment of railways giving enormous economic benefit and safe reliable public transport for all. The closure of many of the railways since the 1950’ “may have been an understandable economic decision” but only in the short term. However the REAL CRIME by short sighted bureaucrats is the selling off the land of the track beds for profit to private development. These well engineered LEVEL communication corridors connecting centres of population, will definitely be needed again in the future. At least France by making them into cycle ways is keeping them in public ownership and they can easily be reverted into public transport routes in future: however not in the UK as they have largely been built on and demolished so depriving future generations.
With this enormous increase in bureaucrats living off the public’s taxes and desire for always more; it can be seen that the governments embracing and encouragement of individual car transport since the 1950’s is because it is the greatest tax revenue generator for government as the motor industry is taxed at every level. Railways and canals do not produce enough tax.
Yes “the lamentably ugly and soulless urban waste” is created by an urban population who know nothing else; are now in the majority and control the public purse.
So with the world population out of control, being no longer connected to the land and having tripled in just two generations, it should be remembered that the dinosaurs lived for much longer. However they farted themselves into extinction by changing the climate, so I am sure that it will not be long also before the “urbanites” have totally destroyed our environment: then nature will resolve another species into extinction. In the meantime let us enjoy a journey along the canals of France.

Thank you for producing and presenting this. When I learned of the canals existence I got extremely interested in thd justification for the project. It seems Gibraltar has always been a pinch-point, for whichever maritime empire controls it.
Learning about Germany vs Britain during the second war, in North Africa, really drove it home how important is control
Of Gibraltar, Malta and Alexandria. As a North American the Mediterranean is so fascinating that there’s only ONE WAY IN (only the Black Sea is more curious)

I agree that the canal itself is a masterpiece. Unfortunately the local government has neglected the bike route along the canal, it is over quite long distances in a abysmal condition. It was still great, although I was sometimes annoyed by the condition of the cycle path.

Les équivalents en millions d euros me font doucement rire quand on sait combien coute les travaux public . Incroyable que cela a pu etre fait en seulement 15 ans sans machines , seulement a la main. Meme aujourd'hui avec toutes nos pelleteuse je ne suis pas sur qu on y arriverait dans ces délais !
Did the canal twice on a rental boat, if you have the means to do it. it is an experience to never forget. do the descent from carcassonne to agde to get the best experience

Que l'immigration a construit la France? Que et que, bravo aux anciens, on profite toujours 350 ans + tard de ce génie bien français. On a laissé les envieux nous vassalisés. Quelle erreur, une honte.

Marvelous engineering. I wonder, the locks were made ovoid, to better withstand pressure, so why was the dam made straight?
Good question. Actually the dam was made long before the ovoid locks. And first locks were built straight too, but as they often collapse future ones are built ovoid. Riquet was not only a great engineer, but also a great learner ;-)

People I know who have traveled the canal, say the route is in dire need of dredging. Many many sections are just too silted up for boat travel.

The barely existent road goes thru jungle and over mountains, making hauling the load of nitroglycerine extremely dangerous
To do the job, the drivers are offered a lot of money. But the trip on bad roads and rickety bridges is very hard and not everybody makes it to their destination.

Incredible project, even more incredible that it's from the 17th century.
I grew up near a canal in the us, that opened at the beginning of the 19th century, and it was like a little muddy ditch in comparison. There were no mechanisms for controlling flooding or silt, and although it sort of remains today as a walking path, it hasn't been navigable for more than 50 years.

In the place where I reside, people inhabited crude structures, fearful of God and burning witches when the initial Canal du Midi works were commenced. I am sorry to say that things have barely progressed here since that time.

Au début il est dit que le canal faisait une dizaine de mètres de profondeur : il fait 1.60 de tirant d’eau. Je passais à peine avec la quille de 1.45 de mon voilier et talonnais souvent
Il y a des endroits où la profondeur est inférieure à 1,30 m . Des voiliers envasés on en a vus.
Peut-être qu'il n'est plus entretenu comme il l'était à l'époque où le tourisme n'existait pas encore.
Peut être que la profondeur était calculée par rapport au niveau du sol.
moi je saute dans le canal en été depuis un pont entre agde et vias, j ai jamais touché le fond

The necessity to construct this channel has not been just because of Spanish interests, but also because of extensive piracy of islamic North Africa. This problem ended only with the French invasion in Algeria.

Très bon documentaire. Mais il faudrait revoir le titre. Ça n'a jamais été le projet de Louis XIV. C'était le projet de Riquet. Sa vision. Sa réalisation. Louis XIV a simplement participé au financement parce qu'il y a vu un moyen de s'affranchir de l'emprise espagnole.
