I think for the first ending you got, the last shot of Renya smiling at his mother's murder doesn't mean that he did anything evil per se (as we see in the game), but that he had this silent resentment for his neglectful mom and seeing her dead just made him happy.
Not only that, he was also able to get rid of the kidnapper and broke her sister away from the twisted "mom will love us again if we get kidnapped" idea, since their mother would only return with even more verbal violence.
Yeah and honestly it’s difficult to fault the lil guy, cos after everything he’s been through it seems only natural for him to harbor resentment towards his horrible mother, even if he never showed it explicitly before. It’s honestly a really clever and unsettling take on human/child psychology
I feel you guys are ignoring the note at the very end. I think It does mean he is evil. The note talks about how the kidnappers mom beat him and was abusive to him as well. So if you connect the two pasts I think it was for seeing him becoming like the kidnapper when he grows up
I agree with your silent resentment point but I also think he still became evil/psychopathic because this whole game is about the cycle of abuse. The kidnapper was one example of what happens with abuse when the abused finally snaps and does something horrible (i.e. killing his mom in the beginning sequence). The character becomes another example of abuse showing what happens to a kid that normalizes/copes with everything that's normally seen as 'bad'. He gets used to lieing (when talking to classmates), has illusions of grandeur (clown sequence), normalizes stealing because he needs to eat, and normalizes extreme actions for love (sister's kidnapping plan). He's gotta be extremely broken at that point and have such a warped mindset/thought patterns that he'll become a worse version of the kidnapper in the future, thus perpetuating the cycle.
Renya was afraid of his mom, as the sister mentioned when they were at the Children Guidance Center. He smiled at their mom's death because her abuse led to his resentment of her, which reflects how Sarao-the kidnapper-also resented his own absuive mother (the ghost whose corpse was in the attic). As messed up as the sister was, she was equally a victim of the mom's abuse as was the little boy, which explains-not excusing, just explains-why she made the terrible choice of convincing an adult (who she didn't realize was also once upon a time abused by his own mom) to kidnap her and her little brother. The tone of that ending, of Renya smiling at his mom's death, is meant to convey the layers of tragedy to abuse survivors; how it can twist us into finding morbid catharsis in being freed from our abusers, even if it means the abuser's death. Weren't we all cheering for Sarao to kill Renya's mom, when she came to his home to scream in his face?
Gotta feel bad for sarao too. He literally have that reflection when renya mom yell and push him. At least you gotta appreciate he didn't kill renya and his sister. Show how traumatic sarao is
I think Renya smiling at the end when he saw her mom got killed doesn’t mean he is evil or like a psychopath. I think its like a smile of relief? Like he was kinda happy that his verbally abusive mom is finally gone.
Just so people know how audio copyright works: there's two types of copyright, one for the composition, and one for the recording. The composition itself may be centuries old, but the recording could have been done yesterday, and thus still is in some form of copyright.
Very frustrating when it comes to classical pieces because you will get false copyright claims due to the automatic detection not being able to distinguish performances.
I have to say, Chilla’s Art does such an impressive job of making genuinely unsettling horror games while also including real pieces of Japanese culture within them. When Insym started doing the homework around the middle of the video it gave me so much nostalgia, cos when I was little I used to actually learn kanji by doing the same exact type of tracing exercises in textbooks lol
The clown is an embodiment of the main characters resentment and hate for his mother, thats why in the dream sequence the clown is shown capturing the sister but not actually murdering her, also the clown playfully kicks its feet to the kid because that is himself entertaining his own self within the madness of an abandoned and unloved home
Is watching a guy play horror video games for comfort weird? Maybe but I don't care. I'm grateful I can watch those videos and Insym you always bring a smile to my face even if I am going through tough times, so thank you.
I assumed this was normal for a number of people to watch various content creators play horror games. At least, it's been MY sense of normal, for the past decade or so. "Normal" versus "weird" is so subjective, though. It shouldn't really matter, so long as you feel it helps you, in some way.
A quick game suggestion: The Cat Lady, super good horror narrative game that’s ingrained in my memory since watching a play through as a kid. Would love to watch you play it
Wow, I've not seen Insym being SO excited introducing us into a video for a long time, this game must be a blast to play through! Maybe the body in the attic was the weird guy's mother...? Perhaps that's connected to the scene we saw when the game started.
My guess is the clown is imaginary because the kid heard all these rumours so got scared. Regarding the smile, I'd say it's more the fact that he's happy the mum will finally stop treating them like crap and being happy at someone's death, especially in front of them, is definitely not a normal thing hence the evil smile
That smile is probably more so out of relief of being free at last from the abuse. Morbid catharsis as it is, he was a child being pulled every which way by the whims of everyone around him. Seeing the person who was meant to raise him, who instead scared him, finally dead for good? It makes sense, when coming from a place in which abuse during childhood was all too normal.
@Daelyah I don't think I can fully agree as it is quite clearly shown in a disturbing light. The smile is extreme rather than gentle of relief, and the angle definitely hints at something more creepy/evil. I do agree, though, that he must've felt tremendous relief seeing trash of a parent finally release her clutches on them. I personally don't think they're making it out to be that he was an evil kid or a potential murderer, but rather that they're showing its unnatural to be happy in that situation, so it's a twisted happiness, disturbing. Aka evil.
I love Chilla’s art games sooo much!!! You can tell they put so much work and love into this one. Definitely one of my favorites they’ve made!! The jump scares for me every single time 😭
Some things I will note down while watching the video! 17:40 Hambagu was transliterated here from ハンバーグ .But basically, it's a fist sized meat patty. 23:40 These shoe lockers are called 下駄箱 (げたばこ) They're basically in all schools. At 25:16 the kids refer to inside and outside shoes. Inside shoes are 上履き(うわばき)as opposed to normal shoes. 27:04 In a game of hide-and-seek those who hide can say まだだよ (Not yet)、もういいよ (We're ready) to tell the seeker that they can begin. 27:55 Here, Keiji is more saying along the lines of "I'm (hiding as) grass". The translation was too literal. 57:18 The sister says something more like "Behave yourself"
Watching so much JP media made me really want Hamburg steak Having ordered some from Cracker Barrel - I can see the appeal It is a hamburger with like onion gravy on it Kinda like a salisbury steak Curious how the dish is in Japan
The first ending, I honestly think the kid was just too damn traumatized. Mom abandoned him, sister orchestrated a kidnapping AFTER abandoning him as well, stalked by a clown, got ripped out of foster care, then witnessed his mom’s death by his kidnapper. I think he’s just mentally fucked after that 😭
Going through abuse, sometimes seeing an abuser's death brings morbid catharsis; a twisted sense of freedom. But as a kid caught in such a shitty situation, I'm not sure how else one could respond beyond disassociation to the point of going emotionally numb.
Man I love the jankiness of Chilla's Art games. Not only does it add to the uncanny valley, it also gives that little boost of humor to make horror games extra good.
With the first ending, the mom kinda had it coming. It's your responsibility to take care of your kids. If you can't handle it, don't have kids in the first place. If you've already screwed up, put them up for adoption and don't seek to reunite with them later.
I think the clown and the mister are the same person. Also saw someone left a negative steam review just because they had 2.3 hours playtime so couldnt play and refund it, sad that people like that exist imo
Pretty sure the ending kind'a depicts that he is going to become like the killer, because he realizes that his mom resented him because he too looked like his father, so it was all his fault his sister was going through what she was going through.
@Insym, I would recommend "YOU WILL DIE HERE TONIGHT". It's an homage to Resident Evil, but it's a 2.5D rogue-like RPG. Where you're trapped in a mansion with zombies, need to solve puzzles and whenever you engage an enemy, it turns into a separate combat scenario. Also, when you die, you lose that character forever and play as one of the remaining characters (you will also run into the zombie form of your previous character where you died). As a co-op game, I would recommend "LETHAL COMPANY, a first person survival game set in the distant future. Where you land on hazardous planets to collect scrap to feed your Cthulhu-like overlord. What happens when you don't meet your quota? -this is also on Steam
@24:50 Those are not sidewalks but retaining walls. It is a real thing in Japan at least in the countryside, as far as I know it serves the purpose of keeping away mud and grass getting on the road. Here in EU and probably same in US, we instead have tractors with "impact movers" that when needed murder all vegetation that has been creeping up to the road.

I was sad and upset during the whole beginning, even more upset to learn it was a clown kidnapper, and then everything went up in flames for me the moment we looked at the intercom. The timer for the balloons??? I haven't felt so unsettled by a game in ages 😱
I feel that when they create scenes and games where you have to follow another character, they should design them in a way where the following occurs: Okay, so let's say you have a character, and the character's name is Tyra, while the other character's name is Molly. Tyra has to lead Molly to the Royal Imperium because Molly is asking where the Royal Imperium is located so that she can obtain the Great Stone of Imperia. One way to structure this is to make the player character, Molly, have a slightly slower walking pace than Tyra. However, the walking pace should not be so slow that it feels tedious. It should be fast enough that it would take about 7 seconds to reach the Royal Imperium. Tyra can also have a particularly fast pace, but only about 3-5 seconds faster than the player character, ensuring that they both reach their destination fairly quickly. Alternatively, both the player character and Tyra could move at the same pace. If it takes 7 seconds for Tyra to get there and 7 seconds for Molly, who is the player character, all you would have to do is position Tyra in front of the character. When they start walking, the player will inevitably be behind Tyra. At that moment, they can't really go any faster than that unless they sprint. Sprinting should still be an option because some players may already know where to go since they've played the game before. However, an exemption could be made if you think that allowing them to sprint during their first gameplay, where they have no idea where to go, might result in them creating their own confusion as they search like it's a puzzle. In this case, on their second playthroughs, they should be allowed to sprint because they now know where to go. Alternatively, you could remove the need for the character to guide them to the area entirely as if the game remembers their progress. Regardless of whether it's the player's first playthrough or not, they should be allowed to sprint before the event where Tyra must lead them and after Tyra has led them to their destination throughout the game. This would help avoid situations where the player outpaces the other character and becomes disoriented, which goes against the intended gameplay experience.

Not gonna lie, as far as how bizarre Chilla's games go... this one was pretty wild. But I understand the premise, reading through some of the other comments. But still... weird
lol they sure do love their cartoonishly evil villians in Japan especially in anime almost as much as they like autism level explanations of things haha
the real horror is the fact that even though the sister got perfect marks on her exams she still didnt understand the concept of "cleaning the damn house" you'd think that since she loved their mom so much she wouldve made sure that she and her brother kept the house tidy
The ending is a horror trope that shines a light on a real issue of boys growing up to becoming men who murder. So yes, the boy found out that he enjoys it when people who are cruel are murdered. There's more to it but yes. The boy ends up now becoming a murderer... that's all I'll say without writing a whole ass dissertation in here. A second horror trope that it also highlights is the fact that people, when watching movies etc, usually end up finding joy seeing 'evil' people murdered. But in reality when people were interviewed after watching others be murdered regardless if they believed they were truly evil or not they don't enjoy it. So it circles back to the first point... etc etc no dissertation for me. No thank you, google is free. Goodnight.
It's definitely the weakest of the ones he's played on stream... It seemed more like a generic jumpscare/chase-oriented 'horror' title than the slow-burn psychological horror-meets-everyday-tasks that CA games are known for.

Goodnight.
I don't think the kid is evil lol think aboout how you were rooting for her to get stabbed lmao child has the same sentiment because he's a child

7 days to die Darkness Falls when?! ❤
You talk too much, pay attention to the game
He's so white bc of spice ......
Their worst game yet
It's definitely the weakest of the ones he's played on stream... It seemed more like a generic jumpscare/chase-oriented 'horror' title than the slow-burn psychological horror-meets-everyday-tasks that CA games are known for.
