15:22 As an advad explorer of the Paris Catacombs, I will say that there are some structures like this in there. But not to this extreme. Its mostly one level or one story kind of place, but it does have some MASSIVE rooms. People have actually moved in down in those tunnels and have made it their homes. Its basically a very shady, drug filled, sex filled, mostly lawless underground city.
This map takes big inspiration from the original _Tomb Raider_ games, from using their OST's as it's ambiance, to lifting it's traps' designs and sound effects from the games, and using the ludo-narrative arc of hunting for lost artifacts in forgotten tombs and discovering hidden secrets. That original series always gave a very strange liminal feeling, and seeing that intentionally and faithfully recreated in VR is really cool.
Honestly, this feels like the most interesting horror content I've watched since like 2012. I just felt like depression and getting older was the reason nothing horror-related was as interesting or sparked my inspiration as much, but your content proved me wrong. Please keep doing these exploration videos!!! 😀👍
Often times, the softer horror stuff tends to be the scariest because it's not what's there that ends up scaring you.... but what you think of in your head or convince yourself is there that does scare you. That's why atmosphere is so important in a horror game. If you start hitting people with the scares, they may end up getting tired of them, but if you take it slow and steady, that fear and anxiety ends up building up, until the scares finally hit, and they end up hitting hard.
13:00 It is actually very common to find bones and skulls in the paris catacombs. Maybe not full skeletons unless you put in all the effort actually finding and reassembling them all, but I'm sure there's enough bones to _assemble_ plenty of full skeletons down there.
25:48 - It's interesting you say this about him being so close to an exit. In 1793, a man named Philibert Aspairt disappeared after having traveled into the Paris Catacombs. Nobody knew where he was until they found his remains in 1804, eleven years later, a few *_feet_* from an exit to the catacombs. It's scary, these catacombs go for so long and are so dark and desolate that if your light source dies, you're stuck in the dark and may die even if you reach an exit simply because you didn't see it. I believe there's actually a memorial to him in the catacombs placed somewhere around where he died, in the cold, dark, silent halls of that massive underground tomb. Scary stuff.
I genuinely don’t understand how you do this. I mean I can get through a horror map, but it makes me so tense, and if I’m home alone, it makes me scared to walk around my apartment. I gotta say though, it’s remarkable how much this feels like the future of horror. You’re totally safe, but the primitive part of your brain doesn’t know that. It is as close as I’ve ever been in waking life to experiencing a nightmare. I’m not a horror fan, but I can appreciate how immersive and terrifying this is. I could go on and on so I won’t. It’s just utterly fascinating to live in this time.
This is by far one of the greatest videos in this channel, a VR exploration of catacombs that lasts for over an hour! Thanks so much Librarian for your effort! I wouldn't Dare to even play it alone even if I am not using VR
I'm assuming you've seen it, but if not, his Krot video is honestly such a good video, one of my favourites (ofc, as of writing this I haven't finished the video yet).
"Do things like these really exist in the Paris catacombs?" Yes. They used to be ancient stone mines, carved out through hundreds of years, if not longer - Then became used for dead bodies when Paris literally flooded over with them. Honestly, I'd both love to go down there, but would also be 5000% claustrophobic over it... Would love to go down there with a close-knit team, and map it out with Li-dar and a dedicated team, but honestly it's probably dangerous as hell for MANY reasons.
@@anonecki I believe so, yes. It's made by some artist, but I'm not sure why they'd do that, other than to scare the piss out of anyone seeing it randomly.

Was just watching your "Secrets of Gm_Russia" map and it was giving me strong vibes of the found footage film "As above, so below" as you were crawing in the underground area. Fucking eerie. That film coincidentally is set and filmed within the Paris catecombs mixed with Dante's Inferno. As the anxiety and claustrophia rises you venture deeper into your own personal hell. Very inttruiged by to see you're exploring a map inspired by the same location, with uncanny unsettling undertones. The Tomb Raider music snippets are a nice touch, nostalgic. I never knew how to describe the strange feelings the classic TR games gave me, the massive caverns and ruins somehow inhabited by animals. The limited level design made it feel like nonsensical architecture, only designed to be a puzzle for humans thousands of years down the line. Like time was no obstical for their architects and their games. Despite being long gone, they were always several steps ahead of the choices you'd make.
56:01 I had to do a double-take at this part because the sound effects sounded exactly like the blade traps in the old Tomb Raider games and made me nostalgic lol. The blades even look like those traps. Edit: The key and door sound at 59:22 as well

Hey librarian! Quick question: You often have trouble switching between your flashlight and grabbing things. Are there any mods for the player character that work like a headlamp? I don't know if such a thing exists or how to find it because I have never played GMOD, but I have been watching your videos for a while and it only just occurred to me that someone might have thought to make one.
The fist 7 minutes are very reminiscent of a dream I had. Especially your commentary about 'hearing' voices through the sounds of rushing water, but not distinct enough to be sure. I was in some partially undergeound hillside dam thing, staring into a metal tube with water rushing out. And I could swear I was hearing voices rushing out with the water.
22:10 probably from some old maps they can, but then again who knows how many of them have been collapsed from the centuries or from wars like ww2. Not to mention the entrance ways that weren’t documented. The past year or two they’ve even found abnormalities and undocumented places on the wall of China that nobody knew about until recently with technology, but then again the circumstances were different. Also, there’s some sketchy things that go on down there. There’s explorers that do go down there to document and stuff, but typically one doesn’t go to a place like that who has the purest of intentions and isn’t up to no good.
Just wanted to say that you have singlehandedly inspired me to buy Garry's Mod! It's now in my wishlist. Can't believe I'm 34 years old and have never played this game, haha.

If you’re still curious, there’s an estimated 6 Million+ people buried in the catacombs. Here’s some fun facts: There was a fully furnished modern room, with electricity, a projector, and a note that said, “do not look for us.” Yes I’m serious, you can look that up if you wish. There is only 1 documented death as a result of getting lost in the catacombs, and the explorer has a memorial dedicated to him. The catacombs were started in around 516~ AD as a result of a leprosy outbreak. Visiting the Paris catacombs has been completely illegal since 2006 due to it being vandalized, however many people still visit and explore as there are only 5 police officers patrolling the 200km+ tunnels.
I've been binging and watching so many of your videos lately, they're a perfect blend of horror, good and sometimes funny reactions, and a really passionate person who takes their time to throughly explore and try to make sense of what the map creators try to convey with their maps, I've been having so much fun with your videos
Curtains closed, Under the blanket, put this video and watch it make me instantly fall asleep. Comfy, scary but not jumpscare style just ambient scares, relaxing video and very long. I'm still watching this video but gosh the video's that librarian make are awesome. No talkative dude without stopping or scream just some "HUH ! oof it was just the fire." stuff and moment of silence that immerse us into the video. I love those vids and continue like this, those kind of entertaining video's are not common on UA-cam. Update: oh and I forgot awesome video to watch when you have covid lmao.
Some parts looked like they were inspired by "As above, so below". Or at least they hit the same notes seeing as they both use the Parisian catacombs as the setting.
50:25 the worst part about that is it's been skeletons meaning that person's been dead for Way Long but the fact that one's not a skeleton means he died somewhat recently say maybe 3 months maybe 🤔
interesting story regarding the cross room. Catacombs was initially developed as a Trouble in terrorist town map, given my past explorations of this map in particular can say with certainty that that cross chamber that seemed like a "confessional" is actually a traitor tester.
My notif sound for my phone is Sheldon J. Plankton saying "My wife is dead" with an eerie echo effect. I got that at about 30:18 and it scared the shit out of me.
I like to think some of those skeletons especially the ones with blood died in ww2 fleeing or hiding but in the end still caught a german bullet could even explain the meat grinder too. Perhaps they were catching so many people down there they set up a disposal site as to not alarm anyone about to fall into the same trap with the surplus of new corpses
I don't know if it's because I often watch you while eating dinner, which is when I drink Arizona Iced Teas, but the opening to this video reminded me of that kind of flavor. Just an oddly sweet summer/spring feel. Also, I am reminded of soul caliber IV and the tutorial level for Mario Party DS... I don't know completely why, but I like it.
you need to play boneworks if you haven't already. its a really interactive physics based VR game, not too unsimilar to half-life, that has cool environments that give off a liminal vibe as well. its very well made id think it would be cool to see on this channel
please continue these Gmod exploration videos. they are so comfy to watch and i love feeling the same sense of unease as you wander around in cyberspace
To answer your questions: Yes it is real. Yes there are indeed thousands and thousands of skeletons. The catacombes have been used to dispose of corpses. Yes that sign meant "NOT ALLOWED FOR PUBLIC" No it was not built with bones and skulls, it’s just that they were put here. And yes, it is part of the sewers.
Great video as always i just cant get enough of these exploration videos in gmod there is so much boring stuff on youtube these days i havent been waiting for a new video in a channel in a while
this makes me want a semi open world (using the tunnels and catacombs to get around) half life game that takes place france while fighting the combine.
Nice to see that gate tomb raider theme and descent into hell perfect. I saw a video about catacombs rhe other day gate to hell and some reporter vanished too rather disturbing but intresting no gateway seen though.
now keep in mind, the bodies he finds of people who got lost and died down there had to be at least 1-2 years old, which means that nobody has been down in thoes parts of the catacombs for a very long time...
17:46-18:13 Yes, this. I do this all the time. It's easy to read about the number of deaths in a certain war or the number of graves in a cemetery but it's incredibly hard to wrap your head around the idea that all of them were people. The fact that every single one of the 60-80 million people killed in World War 2 was a person. All of them had their own experiences, desires, and potential. Every thing that each of us has done in our lives, all that we've experienced. Now times that by millions. 22:11 They don't. That's how explorers get in. Entrances in people's basements and random side streets.
Trying to watch this late at night is increasing the scary factor even more! Who knew that by upping the dosage of your atmosphere to the persons atmosphere would make it scarier!
oh my gosh!!! yes!!! you should absolutely play Project Zomboid!! Sorry for the late comment, only just found your channel a month ago, been binge-ing it since!
These tunnels do indeed span basements of residential and businesses throughout the city, as do many tunnels in Europe. Many of these networks are massive, and still not fully mapped.
You can see his VRMod flashlight's light get brighter when he tries to turn it off. To be completely honest... I think sometimes he just presses the wrong buttons lol
No those structures arent in the paris catacombs. Its just pure tunnels. There still so much to cover and explore down there. If anyone ever decides to visit, Once you begin to see no graffiti on the walls. You have gone to far deep.
Wow okay, I guessed that the sign at 5:28 said "Closed to Public"... well it's "Forbidden to public" but I think I got pretty close. FYI: I am not french [I am German] nor have I taken french classes, just guessed it.

25:10 is very epic to be honest, cuz his reaction paired with the music and ambiance is perfect
8:10 "I'll save that hole for later"
That's what he said.
That music reminds me of old Tomb Raider from the PS1 days. 😍
this would be perfect combined with LIDAR and the nav_generate command
Every time librarian uploads, I gain some sense of my humanity back :)

Same, help me sleep in a weird way
Oh, the Tomb raider music at the start takes me baaaack
The full on happiness and fascination behind you in the end brought a smile to my face.
I hate and love this map, Its so terrifying yet so intriguing
These have to be my favorite videos on your channel
Just the idea of exploring maps in gmod and soaking in the vibes is so cool
Some parts looked like they were inspired by "As above, so below". Or at least they hit the same notes seeing as they both use the Parisian catacombs as the setting.
Same thought yeah
50:25 the worst part about that is it's been skeletons meaning that person's been dead for Way Long but the fact that one's not a skeleton means he died somewhat recently say maybe 3 months maybe 🤔
I love the sounds from the original Tomb Raider
the levers are from TR too, that's crazy
Estimated 6 million skeletons in the catacombs, Perfect for necromancy!
6 million? Dont you think thats a bit high
@@exeterd9 Nope. There are legitimately the remains of over 6 million people in the Paris Catacombs.
@@randomlyentertaining8287 if necromancy was real then
Paris is going on another civil war
7:45 - OH GOD the OLD PS1 _Tomb Raider_ (1995/'96) cave ambiance noise! Jezz I remember that SO CLEARLY and they're using it in this map?!
explore gm_russia please it has a big sewer and super cramped spaces you can crawl under
He has done it I believe
interesting story regarding the cross room.
Perhaps they were catching so many people down there they set up a disposal site as to not alarm anyone about to fall into the same trap with the surplus of new corpses
woa that's craaazy bro
I don't know if it's because I often watch you while eating dinner, which is when I drink Arizona Iced Teas, but the opening to this video reminded me of that kind of flavor. Just an oddly sweet summer/spring feel. Also, I am reminded of soul caliber IV and the tutorial level for Mario Party DS... I don't know completely why, but I like it.
You Pavlov’d yourself.
you need to play boneworks if you haven't already. its a really interactive physics based VR game, not too unsimilar to half-life, that has cool environments that give off a liminal vibe as well. its very well made id think it would be cool to see on this channel
please continue these Gmod exploration videos. they are so comfy to watch and i love feeling the same sense of unease as you wander around in cyberspace
To answer your questions:
Yes it is real.
Yes there are indeed thousands and thousands of skeletons.
The catacombes have been used to dispose of corpses.
Yes that sign meant "NOT ALLOWED FOR PUBLIC"
No it was not built with bones and skulls, it’s just that they were put here.
And yes, it is part of the sewers.
Great video as always i just cant get enough of these exploration videos in gmod there is so much boring stuff on youtube these days i havent been waiting for a new video in a channel in a while
7:27 When you drive into Detroit, Michigan.
this makes me want a semi open world (using the tunnels and catacombs to get around) half life game that takes place france while fighting the combine.
Actually 9+ years old.
Because it takes 9 years for the human body to just about fully decompose into a skeleton
Ok, you’re right…
I found the part of the vodep
There are basements and structures (although most are graffitied and entirely ruined), but no death traps, fires or cannibal hideouts
…that you know about.
@@SuperShadow316
True
You got an instant like from me for the Tomb Raider music at the start.
i never knew Gmod had a VR Mode till now through The Librarian, absolutely love the videos he makes
Yeah it’s called VRMod on the steam workshop
17:46-18:13
Yes, this.
Entrances in people's basements and random side streets.
nice Shawshank Redemption reference
Trying to watch this late at night is increasing the scary factor even more! Who knew that by upping the dosage of your atmosphere to the persons atmosphere would make it scarier!
8:51 when i played i saw a shadow looking at me here, scared me to death
Let's start one hour of pure joy ! Because this is the main emotion that travels me when I am watching your videos !
oh my gosh!!! yes!!! you should absolutely play Project Zomboid!!
Sorry for the late comment, only just found your channel a month ago, been binge-ing it since!
These tunnels do indeed span basements of residential and businesses throughout the city, as do many tunnels in Europe. Many of these networks are massive, and still not fully mapped.
I think your problem with the Flashlight Swep and the VR flashlight might just be a conflict between the two causing one to remain on no matter what.
You can see his VRMod flashlight's light get brighter when he tries to turn it off.
To be completely honest... I think sometimes he just presses the wrong buttons lol
no its the issue with the old vr flashlight mod.
It's actually an issue with the Flashlight mod itself, and it apparently happens when you pick stuff up while the flashlight is out.
No those structures arent in the paris catacombs. Its just pure tunnels. There still so much to cover and explore down there. If anyone ever decides to visit, Once you begin to see no graffiti on the walls. You have gone to far deep.
The graffiti is a bit disrespectful, but then again respect and human decency isn’t a common thing in todays world.
@@kova1577 the catacombs only cover a small part of the tunnels under paris, plus they've been dead for over 300 years
@@sierra1513 true, but it’s still a mass grave basically
@@AnAverageGoblin not a zionist like you
Someone else in the comments said there is, just not massive. So who is correct then?
The Tomb Raider 2 music/ambience in this map sure brings back memories.
Wow okay, I guessed that the sign at 5:28 said "Closed to Public"... well it's "Forbidden to public" but I think I got pretty close.
FYI: I am not french [I am German] nor have I taken french classes, just guessed it.

A day with 2 librarian videos? Thanks for your hard work man
im so glad this guy dosent fake scream for scares that really annoys me
"I am a white person in a horror movie" relatable
Almost happy 1 year anniversary of my favorite librarian video!
Bro, imagine playing this with Disc 11 being one of the sound effects that randomly play.
could choose a cave sound and it'd be more fitting
Loving all that old school tomb raider sound effects.
Edit: this is just one big tomb raider love letter.
I have actually been in the Paris catacombs. It was pretty cool
You deserve more, all things you do are amazing to watch atleast to me.
This reminds me of the tutorial of Oblivion which takes place in underground ayleid ruins that connect to the sewers.
11:50 Wait, I recognize those barrels... They're from RE4 for I'm not mistaken! You should have broken them, maybe they had something in them.
All of this feels so familiar in a way. I'm gonna have to re-watch those urbex videos I've seen on these tunnels
