Why is gardening so terrifying? I'm not afraid to take on any animal for training but growing food for us scares me. So super frustrating 😤 🤣 I am so very grateful to you and Jess for putting these vlogs out there. You ladies are teaching me so very much. Thank you!

Hardening off is the heart wrenching part. In 6a zone New Jersey I can’t trust Farmer’s Almanac so I go by past calendars I’ve kept. No plants outside until May 20 and expect cold weather by October 1. All over the state relatives follow these same dates for generations of gardeners. Now if the weather stays warmer longer into the Autumn, yeah. But consider that a gift from God cause it’s not ‘normal’. 🌸

I take those calendars with a grain of salt. My "last frost" is in March, yet we almost always get a light frost in early May. Every calendar says to plant out peppers and eggplants in April, but I know better.

Getting a 3-year pocket calendar and tracking your daily weather you can begin to average out your own garden frost data, the more years you track the better you will know your frost dates. Also tracking daily soil temps is a good idea, it helps narrow down (i do it for a weekly average) when the soil is warmed enough for direct seeding in the spring and transplanting for the main growing season.

Don't the gamble with frost dates could be just another gardener experiment that could give pleasant result, might not, might just be a learning experience.
But, as you say, if one is depending on that plant, because of space or time constraints, better to keep in mind the average last frost.
When I started the plan for my property, my plan was to not have a plan! I figured that would make a forest garden look more natural. But as the reality of the immense job set in, I realized I needed to be planning to a certain extent.
WRT the plants that don't transplant well, the trick is to have them in big enough cup and let the soil dry a little bit so you can move them from cup to ground with zero disturbance of the roots.

My Mom who had gardened all her life always told me to wait until after Easter. She said everybody gets too rushed and end up losing plants. I'm in NE Texas, zone 8a, and our last frost date is April 2nd and Easter is April 17th, two weeks later. It's going to be extremely hard to wait. So I think I'll see what the weather forecast says and decide when the time comes. Although, here in Texas, the weather is crazy too. Hard to go by the forecast. So idk what I'll do! lol!! I did start celery seed and bunching onion seeds today in the house. :)

why not just make a chart for Last frost dates, and succession growing. See example I am making up
last frost date spring is 5/1.
    2 weeks is 4/17, 4 weeks is 4/3, 6 weeks is 3/20, 8 weeks is 3/6, 10 weeks is 2/20....
then you dont have to constantly look up the dates.
then write in which crops are for which time frame starts
you can write (1) for first sow, (2) for second sow etc after each item on your chart.
