    She is the best to this day! She still scares me. She was so excellent for the part. And then to see her smile and realize she is only acting. She will never be equaled. She was just super. Nobody will ever ride a broom like her. So Thankful for the thrills she gave us........God Bless you Margaret.

      Look up her appearance on Mr. Rogers. She made a point of appearing on his show to explain to the kids watching that her character wasn't real, and was just a part she was playing, so kids wouldn't be scared of her. She even went around to elementary schools to explain to kids that the character was just a part she played in the movies. She did this because she felt bad when she discovered how frightening her character was to small children.

    This woman is a legend.
    That makeup she is wearing had acid in it, which caused her to get serious chemical burns on her skin. And when she first appears as in the witch in Munchkinland and then disappears with the fire around her, she severely burned her hand. You have no idea how much this woman went through to bring us this character.

    Thank you for posting this marvelous find; an actor friend of mine met Ms. Hamilton when she was almost 80, still doing local theater! (old actors never die, they just do community theater). He was a standup comic who was working on a Wicked Witch parody and met her by complete accident; she was so good-natured she actually showed him how to do the "Poppies....Poppieeeees....."
    bit from the movie, so he could do it properly in his act!

    What a lovely little clip of Margaret showing her true self. Seeing it,l'm reminded of the fact that the people who played ugly evil people for a living tended to be the nicest most gentle people in real life,whereas more than a few attractive and idolised stars of the screen were anything but nice in real life..Makes you think doesn't it. Margaret would have been pleased this fragment has survived having voiced her concern regarding her image with children in the wake of Oz.

  • @fcyett
    @fcyett  15 років тому +5

    Definitely. Her appearance on "Mister Rogers" was an attempt to make things better... to explain to kids that it was pretend, just as they did when dressing up in costumes for Halloween. Her character has tremendous influence considering her on-screen time in Oz is a mere eleven minutes.

    Margaret Hamilton trying out for the part. That smile shows her inner beauty in real life. Loved her. Easily the best actress to play the witch. The definitive version. Yes she was burned when they set the flames too soon around her as she fell through the trap door of the stage, after finishing her threat to Dorothy. You can see the looks of alarm on the faces of Judy and Billie Burke even though they kept right on shooting. Margaret,s copper based green paint scorched her face.

    @HotShotRuksy:
    1. Judy Garland was 16, but made out to be 13. In the original book, Dorothy is meant to be an inquisitive, decisive mature 10 year old, unlike her rather dainty and fragile 16 year old movie counterpart.
    2. MGM (owned by Warner Bros. now) did the 1939 film, but Burton & Disney did the 1980's Return to Oz, a "sequel" based on both the second Oz book & Ozma of Oz, because whilst MGM owned rights to the first book, Disney owned rights to all the sequels.

    The main qualm i have with the iconic film is that the issue regarding Miss Gulch and Toto is left unresolved. The dream sequence also is a peeve, since I'd prefer it literal, as per the original Baum tale (because that's how the sequels came to be).
