the worlds greatest lighting company THORN EMI, and we all love the THORN beta 5 sox lantern
Worked in Thorn House International Div' during the late 70's and took West African clients around the manu'/assembly many times in Enfield........
Interesting to hear! Didn’t Thorn also have a lamp factory in Africa at that time, perhaps jointly owned with other lampmakers?
I have some Thorn GLS and Mercury lamps from the 1970s that appear identical to the British-made types, but marked Made in R.S.A. One is also marked ELMASA, Electric Lamp Manufacturers of South Africa. Presumably that was a joint venture like ELMA (Electric Lamp Manufacturers of Australia) and ZELMA (New Zealand), whose factories were run jointly by Thorn, Osram-GEC, Crompton and Philips to produce lamps for all of those brands at a single factory for the region. But I have not been able to find much information about lamp manufacturing in Africa.
@@jamesdhooker Not to my knowledge James we shipped everything via Romford to our appointed sub's
I think my grandpa was one of the people who invented the 2D lamp at Thorn in Enfield
Perhaps Basil Antonis? I have one of his early examples on my website at www.lamptech.co.uk/Spec%20Sheets/D%20FLC%20Thorn%202D16.htm. This lamp was invented by him in 1980-1981 together with John Chapman, who I once had the pleasure of meeting.
