    My grandmother had a stone springhouse. You couldn't keep your finger in the water, more than 3 seconds. It was freezing. There were big square 5 inch thick slabs on the floor in the well area to walk on. Then an area to store cold items. Really cool.

    We have a fireplace like structure like that in my 1800s home's basement. Never knew what it was for either

      Before there was electricity many houses also had a small spring house to store and preserve food.
