As a white Afrikaner myself, I think that, it is a coloured language as much as anybodies language. It is our language. The biggest mistake ever made by white afrikaners was to exclude our brothers and sisters from all colours from each other with that apartheid bullishlt. Now we are strangers. Asking ourselves who are we and what are we. We are afrika(a)n(s).
First comment that I can see that doesn't make me angry as a coloured. I get so angry when people tell me Afrikaans is not my language because I'm not white. Thank you, we can both have it and it can be ours. Dankie broer dat jy ons acknowledge
Afrikaans isn't a white language but it isn't a coloured language either. It's a collaboration between the cultures/languages. But it does have probably 90% Dutch influence so taking Afrikaaners or Boers out of the equation isn't fair. If anyone looks up the Fresian language you will see its almost exactly like Afrikaans same as Flemish. In fact that is because the farmers in that part of Europe didn't/still don't speak proper Dutch/German because traditionally they weren't of the educated people. So that's also why the Dutch and Germans say you speak a dubbed down or old style simplified dutch because that's what the farmers in that region brought over with them to South Africa. They didn't bring academic style dutch with them. Also Afrikaans has French, German, Portuguese, Malay languages, San mixed so it's a collaborative. Just be happy it's spoken by a variety of people from all walks. Nobody has sole claim to it..
Afrikaans is Dutch with all the gutteral yukkiness taken out of it. Sorry my Dutch brothers, but Afrikaans is just way easier on the ears than Dutch. At least it is to me. I have known a few Dutch people and I find the language loud and sometimes bombastic but that's probably because I am usually cringing away when I hear it. Why do Dutch people speak so loud?
+Sibusiso Siso It is not Dutch, a Dutchman cannot understand me and I cannot understand a Dutchman. The language was born in Africa. When I was at school we were forced to read a book in native dutch and we all Hated it because we could not understand it and we got bad marks in Afrikaans because of this fracking dutch book!!!
Bro, I speak Afrikaans and Dutch. Afrikaans is absolutely born of Dutch. What you should rather say is that the Afrikaans language developed in South Africa. But to imagine that Afrikaans just randomly was born in South Africa, when 90%+ of it is derived from Dutch is silly. Yes, I know, it seems difficult to understand at first, but I promise you, once you get the main few differences down, you'll be reading in Dutch in no time. Why? Because Afrikaans developed from it. And good thing, because it sounds better. ;) (Ja, sorry jongens, maat het is waar.)
I remember back in 97 in South Carolina I was speaking to my mother on the phone in the hallway and there was this black girl from south Africa and she thought I'm speaking afrikaans... I was speaking swiss German. To her it sounded the same.
Macedonian and Bulgarian are very similar languages with high amounts of mutual intelligibility. Same goes with Dutch and Afrikaans. Dutch and German. Dutch and English. Spanish and Portuguese.
I barely speak Afrikaans but I don't know why some people's comments are so bad saying it's "dutch" or "european" as if English is not... yes it's a sister language of ditch but it's still our language and we made it our own
meagan stemmers afrikaans mostly comes from dutch. there's a difference from how similar afrikaans and dutch is, versus english and dutch. english has a ton of different languages mixed into it by now. afrikaans has more than dutch to it, but it's still very similar. english is more like a second cousin of dutch.
Right. English is a European while Afrikaans is an African language. That is why they don´t use the word "European" but "White". Afrikaners and Coloureds are part of the same Afrikaans language
Afrikaans is to Dutch what the American English is to Anglo English. The coloureds have every right to claim the language as their own, but to say it was never a white language is incorrect. Look at the fact that black Americans have been speaking English for many generations, but English was at one point a white people language.
Afrikaans is a lot more difficult to understand to Dutch people than American English is to English people. Sometimes Afrikaans speakers and Dutch people use English to communicate.
haha i think that british and American English have just a big difference in the accent. Im from THE Netherlands and if i hear Afrikaans i can understand it, but its really weird sounding for someine that speaks Dutch. It sounds to us like a little kid of 3 years old tries to talk. haha and also that you use words that i think are from anno 1400's...
The reason for our language sounding like a “little kid of 3 years old” is simply because we simplified the grammar and phonology (as well as the orthography) and added double negatives (which came, I think, from French). Also our vowels work differently and our vocab is noticeably different, e.g. We don’t use C or Z outside proper nouns, nor do we have the Z sound except in those same instances. Our vowels also function slightly differently and we only ever roll our Rs. To me, modern Dutch sounds like like a semi-Americanised Afrikaans-German creole; especially since you use Sch rather than Sj like we do.
that is the right interpretation of the actual position of Zuidafrikaans. It is about identity. A sociological necessity. But a claim to a language is as bad as a claim to land. So Zuidafrikaans is a fact, spoken more by black people than by white people. It isn't more than that. Historically then, I am Flemish and Zuidafrikaans comes so so close to my mothertongue. I live in Belgium. In a weeks time I would speak Zuidafrikaans fluently. Jy sal ni ween ni om die Zuidafrikaanse taal suykerbossie.
i can't understand the concerning if afrikaans is a white language or not. ppl in south africa seem not to ask the same question when speaking english.
"Is Afrikaans a white language?" she asks in English... "[Afrikaans] is the language I grew up in, it's all I know" he says in perfect English. My takeaway from this video is South Africa is one very confused place.
"Afrikaans is the only thing I know" - he said in English. They are a very confused and confusing nation, they have 12 official languages, imagine poor fellow how has to make sure all legal documents are up to scratch and been translated correctly.
they use the world "white" because if they use the word "European" the answer is obvious. English is a European language while Afrikaans is an African language.
Why wouldn’t coloureds be confused? u speak a language mostly spoken by whites while u have brown skin , I wouldn’t compare it to English since that’s more international, this is like a bunch of black guys speaking Hindu or Chinese as their first language
@@mrk3815 but English is the language of the English, a European language which as a mother language is also the language of mostly white people in England, America, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, while Afrikaans is an African language.
@N.majola Afrikaans is NOT a European language. It is not spoken in any country of Europe. English IS a European language, while Afrikaans is a language born in Africa. In fact, most South African regions are former Afrikaner states like Transvaal, Orange Free State or The Cape. South Africa as a nation is basically an Afrikaner construction, as you can see by the name of its currency (rand), by its main buildings, its borders or its cities.
I know every Coloured person must first educate him or herself about language, culture and history before commenting. PLEASE DO N PROPER STUDY! YOU MAKING A FOOL OF YOURSELF AND OUR RACE. STOP DEFENDING WHAT IS NOT YOURS.
@@tonyfoul8821 Coloured is not a Race but a mixture of several races, including White (25% on average according to genetic studies en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coloureds )
It’s not of complete European origin, it is completely a creole origin. It’s not about coloreds speaking it, that’s the point of this video. Coloreds do not speak a European language, Afrikaans is only Afrikaans because of its non-European conditioning. It is South African language & South Africa is diverse, white people hijacked the identity & language
I think that no language can be assigned to a race. I'm a white German guy who learns and loves Afrikaans. It'd be the same if someone would tell me that I'm not allowed to speak Afrikaans, because it isn't "my language" or I'm not South African. So what? I wanna keep Afrikaans alive even though I live on the other side of the world. Ek hou van Afrikaans ♥️🇿🇦
It's amazing how hard "they" try to drive a wedge between two minorities that have had no big problems before in my experience. Afrikaans derives from Dutch yes, but it is 100% South African, does not mater what your colour is, if you speak it and dream in it, it yours....
That part made me laugh. "appropriated by white people who were trying to make it their own". I agree it's not specific to any certain race but it was definitely derived from the Dutch.
I do think we are all allowed to have our own opinion. This piece was to share with you the view of the Coloured People not to take away from any other races that speak the language. Respect the work that was put into this piece. If you don’t like it fine, but please don’t be disrespectful. Dankie! 🙏🏾
How would that even work? Did teachers stand in front of class with a clip board who selected random white kids and ordered them to change their home language to Afrikaans, from I guess Dutch or English. She did not play this crazy theory through in her head LOL. Afrikaans belongs to Afrikaners and Coloureds alike.
How come people would counsider Afrikaans a 'white language' but not English? English was brought over by the European colonizers too. Afrikaans is one of the languages of the South African people, just as English and Zulu and Xsosa are. That's what it is. There's no color atttached to the language, only people.

Maybe learn more about your ancestry before saying stupid things.
People are confusing some many different issues in these comments. If you speak in terms of language roots, then sure Afrikaans has dutch roots. However you can't claim coloreds can't speak it because it is not "their" language or that they should speak something different, because it is a "white" language. For them it is the natural language. It is a language part of their history and culture. You can't deny them that. That is like denying somebody their whole identity. People don't really understand language. There was no such thing as dutch language when the Afrikaaners came to South Africa, because there was no such thing has the Netherlands. Before the dutch declaration of independence from the Spanish in the 1600s there had never existed a country named the Netherlands. All the European languages we talk about today such as French, German, Dutch etc are entirely modern constructs. People spoke a wide variety of dialects in Europe and it was hard to say where one language ended and another one began. Dutch like English, German, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic etc is all a form of germanic language. As countries have created borders different local variations have become emphasized. E.g. Germans living close to the Netherlands would speak very similar to dutch people, but as generations passed, national school systems, government, radio TV etc would gradually forge a sort of language unity. We we think of as German today is really just the type of German they used to speak in Berlin. What we think of as French is what they used to speak in Paris. For practical reasons a nation state could have school books and literature in a million different dialect variations and so they standardized, which caused speech to become standardized within a border over time. A language is a living and breathing thing always changing, evolving and getting influenced. Afrikaans is a language which got created in Africa by many different kinds of people. And so people who live there should have a right to claim it as their language.
Good points. It's important to stress how in continental Europe many people don't speak the pure version of the language but have regional splits of the language. In Britain less so, but on the continent it's important to adapt to the local way of speaking. In Switzerland people will speak to foreigners in High German but revert to local Swiss German (and there are many varieties!) to speak with each other. Kind of like Afrikaans. Regional Coloured Afrikaans has many differences to standard Afrikaans.
The fact is Afrikaans also became the language of the French who came to South Africa because they weren't allowed to use their own langauge at one point... Afrikaans is a language created and loved by many races and cultures in South Africa and around the world today. It doesnt belong to any one race. I have always told people in other countries that Afrikaans is the mother tongue of white decendants and colords in South Africa. I've never thought of it as only the Boere language. I'm half South African, half American and part of my American ancestors was American Indian and i speak Afrikaans and am going to pass it on to my kids. We dont need to be jealous or offended over this langauge!
Afrikaans is derived from Dutch, but like the man stated in the video a lot of other spoken languages were added. So Yes its youre official language now. And dont let anybody tell you different. Peace.
A language doesn't have a skin colour but emerges and survives among certain races or etnic groups. A great example from Europe is Hungarian which was originally spoken by Asians but now most of the speakers are white.
That’s why this video was made, white people have painted Afrikaaners as a white language, this is about recognizing for what it is. A South African language
@@Pyovali Hungarian language diverged from its Ugric relatives in the first half of the 1st millennium BC, in western Siberia east of the southern Urals.
@@matto6195 it's okay if they wanna claim it's not native because of white settlers. Then all bantu languages, zulu, xhosa, venda, ndebele, swati, tswana, sotho, tsonga ect. Since people of bantu descent immigrated from western and central africa to RSA. Only native languages in SA are San and khoi. By their definition of course.
@Samuel Amwele how are you lost. If you immigrate from one point of the continent to another you are a immigrant. Khoi and san who are indigenous to south africa looked and sounded nothing like the Nguni people from north western africa that would immigrate to southern africa and split into the bantu groups (approximately a 7 700 km trek). Let me use europe as an example. if people from turkey trekked to say britain, they would be considered immigrants eventhough turks are also european. Because unless you don't know entire continents don't harbour just 1 universal culture right? My point is people say afrikaans isn't a native african language because they don't know what native means when it comes to language. Yes afrikaans people aren't native to southern africa but the language is. Let me explain why. Someone or something is considered native if they were the first to either arrive their, evolve there or if something unique to that country developed there. So on all 3 points the Khoi and san match all 3 boxes. Our primate ancestors arrived in southern africa and evolved into humans some left up north and spread out across the world but the khoi and san ancestors stayed thus they evolved in southern africa, and their culture was unique to southern africa. Bantu and white settlers only tick the last box since both out ancestors moved into northwest africa and western europe and developed different cultures and evolved different physical characteristics. We both however do tick the final box that we both after immigrating to southern africa developed unique cultures and languages found nowhere else in the world other than southern africa. Thus Bantu and afrikaans people are not native people but do have native languages and culture as they both developed them in southern africa. My point was if you denied afrikaans as a language on it's own as not native you should do that to every other language in south africa apart from khoi and san languages.
@Samuel Amwele you're missing my point. Like you acknowledged my point of migration. And on the shakyness of calling something native my point is just if afrikaans can't be considered a native language since it was developed in and only in southern africa(not to be confused with afrikaners/boere who aren't native just like you yourself admitted every other group). Like you admitted the different Bantu languages developed in southern africa post migration thus they are considered native, so should afrikaans as it was created under the similar circumstances. And if not then the other languages that formed that was aswell shouldn't be considered native either. And as an example of why it would be seen as native. What other country speaks afrikaans and has it as a national language. No european country speaks afrikaans. The entire afrikaans language and culture is unique to any other in europe. Similar perhaps but still unique. Just like how bantu languages and culture is similar to that of the Nguni but unique because of how they were created. I personally believe all Bantu languages,Khoi and san and Afrikaans to all be Native because of their origin being rooted in southern africa. Non of us can go to any african(outside of southern africa) or european country and speak our language and be surrounded by people that speak that exact language. It's that simple. The only national language i don't consider Native is English as it didn't develop here like all the others and didn't undergo major fundamental changes to become a unique language like the others. It stayed unchanged. And of course the same goes for the multiple indian languages spoken as they also didn't undergo major change into a different language. But by your reasoning no language in south africa would be deemed native. All i did was make a point.
@@ViceCityExtra And Afrikaans is a mix of Dutch, Malaysian, Khoisan and Bantu, the latter 3 being non-white languages and language families. Thus, Afrikaans *isn't* a white language.
There's also a more creolised dialect spoken by the Oorlam people (a native tribe of ZA), affectionately called "Oorlams," that preserves click consonants.
I feel like a lot of comments here are missing the context of this video. noöne is denying that white people speak Afrikaans too; saying that "it's is not a white language" doesn't imply that it is then a coloured language!! no - it's a multicultural language! this video partly a response to certain people with a political agenda, who insist that Afrikaans is only the language of apartheid, and that it has no place in the New South Africa™. the fact is, brown people have been speaking and writing (initially in an arabic alphabet) Afrikaans since its beginning - since before the Taalbeweging, while Afrikaners still wrote in so-called "Hoog Hollands"
You mean "Leer Nederlands, schrijf Nederlands als ge kunt en wilt, maar als ge niet kunt of wilt, schrijf dan niet Engels, maar Afrikaans". Afrikaans is coloured, English is not.
I live in Kentucky and have no connection to South Africa or Afrikaans, but as an outsider from a post colonial country with race issues, I understand why Afrikaans is controversial. It doesn’t make sense to me though that everyone seems to embrace English but demonize Afrikaans. English, Spanish, French, Dutch are all “colonizer” languages. Lately here in the US, people are trying to use Spanish words instead of English ones and calling English the colonizer language, as if Spanish isn’t one as well....
To be fair the Spanish were better to the indigenous people than the English. And the Spanish territories in the Americas weren't really colonies, they were viceroyalties
I’ve never thought of Afrikaans as specifically a white language. It’s just a language developed from Dutch. Blacks, Whites and Coloureds all have Afrikaans speakers.
You have to remember that a big reason that black people speak Afrikaans is because it is essentially forced on them in school. And during Apartheid, they were forced to learn it. That is a reason so many people, particularly black people, have a problem with still having to be taught this language because of the role it played in their oppression.
Lekka! Ps. You ladies are AWESOME! Thanks for a great show.
Afrikaans is derived from Dutch which was brought here by the Dutch people. It has evolved over the years and yes, it has adopted many new words from many languages. An example we all use 'gogga' is a San word and it is used by English and Afrikaans speaking people. It has transcended it origin and become a full fledged South African word. Not English, not Afrikaans...South African. However, no language belongs to any one nation, race or group. If you want it to be your language then it is yours, whether you are white, coloured or black. Afrikaans belongs to Africans, regardless of race. If you want to call it the oppressors language and refuse to speak it because of that then the only person who will be poorer for it is you. Learn it, claim it, make it your own. It belongs to all of us. We cannot obliterate our history regardless of whether or not we were oppressed or whether we were oppressors. Anyway, doing away with our history and wiping out the Afrikaner and his language, only mars the past and robs people of a heritage that helped formed them. Would you be as proud of being coloured or black if you did not overcome oppression? Would you have such a rich history if colonialism did not happen? Would you as a nation, have the strength of character you now possess if you had never experienced hardship? Don't get me wrong, no one should have to endure being sidelined the way so many South Africans were, but let's face it, it gave you a strength a character you would never have had had you not endured it. Besides, is there a better language for poetry. Is there a better language in which to express how overwhelmingly beautiful and powerful and glorious our country is? I don't think so. Afrikaans may have started with the Dutch, but it belongs to all of us now and it is as the blood in our veins...a part of us we cannot live without.
When you look at the relics of the Anglo Boer war you'll find that their bibles are in Dutch. The written word of the first afrikaans in the oldest surviving manuscript, which describes the basic Islamic learning, was written by the imam Abdul-Kahhar ibn Abdul-Malik in 1868. From 15 January 1876 the Genootskap van Regte Afrikaans society published a journal in Afrikaans called Die Afrikaanse Patriot....in other words Afrikaans was made suiwer, from the Ko'buis that the Cape Townships still speak today....Afrikaans is 90% dutch because my slave forefather had to speak the language of his master. In the Cape Townships unfortunately most free-slaves married the master and this makes Afrikaans our language.
My great grandma born sometime early 1900s spoke fluent Dutch but her daughter my grandma born in die 1930-40s spoke afrikaans... My point, some reason my grandma couldn't speak Dutch. Don't no why don't care. This same great-grandma was given a dutch childrens book by a family friend which was handed down to my grandma, which she probably never read. I know for a fact granny couldn't speak dutch. I have it now but rarely read it and when I do, then obviously comprehension is only about 80%. Can only read it slowly like a degenerate and some words throw me off badly to the point of frustration cause now I don't know what is meant because of 1 or 2 words in the whole sentence is inconcievable. Tracked my family history to the karoo region in western part of eastern cape province which used to be the colonial border with isiXhosa kingdoms, chiefs, etc. Lot of towns here have dutch names, not afrikaans far as I know. Moral of the story: colonization is a poes.
I'm white afrikaans, btw, whose family has historically been living in western parts of Eastern Cape, which as I said used to have a border with the IsiXhosa at Fish river but border moved more east along with British expansion towards the West. Why I mentioned some towns having Dutch names in EC like Nieu-Bethesda or Dordrecht is cause the Dutch colonists obviously named some of them and some of these towns were starting points for the groot trek of which most spoke Dutch hence Oranje Vrijstaat Not Oranja Vrystaat and Zuid-Afrikaanche Not Suid-Afrikaanse Republic.(afr dictionary had not yet been created) In the Transvaal as it was called by the English at the time they wanted to make Dutch the language of the courts and Afrikaans the common language in later years. Reflecting that more and more people had started speaking Afrikaans from the inception of these two republics closer to the end. Which makes sense linguistically speaking offcourse.
Afrikaans is a creole version of Dutch, local words and other things were added to it but its foundation is predominately Dutch hence not an African language. All African tribes have other tribes similar to them, a Xhosa get a few words from a Luhya in Kenya, A Lozi in Zambia can speak to a Sotho in SA without much difficulty and vice versa. Afrikaans is only in one place and its only "cousin" with similar words and all is far away in Europe.
As jy groot geword het ,en Afrikaans is jou moeder taal. Dan is jy Afrikaans no matter skin colour. Ek het meer afrikaans kleurling tjommies en jonkies as wit 😮 😊 As iemand Afrikaans praat dan gesels mens lekker. Voel direk "at home" met my mense ❤❤❤
So you just want people to forget about the history of South Africa and how oppression played such a huge role in it? You want people to forget the negative impact that white people had on poc? Just because you're okay living in a racist society does not mean everyone else should be fine with it.
Kiara Goosen Where did you see me say all that?! Are you deluted? What I do see is how happy you are to speak English! These are all silly discussions which distract from a greater issue. Hey, I marched for George Floyd several times. Been tear gassed. Prodded and beaten like cattle. Those are the real issues to me not silly, petty discussions like this which only serve to distract. Is it white? Is it black? Is it left? Is it right? Is it Ford or is it Chevy? All designed to distract from the real issues!
It's a "white language" because for at least 90% it's Dutch with only small changes. But does it matter though? ... Aren't we at a point where useless conversations like this should just stop?
It is a highly creolized form of Dutch... so that it definitely has european roots, because it is mostly intelligible by dutch speakers, but cannot be considered a “white language” any longer, because of creolization and thus has to be considered a south african language. It is like Lëtzebuergesch in Luxembourg: german roots are obvious... but it is no longer german.
Here is an example of why the concept of "White Language" is a load of BS. I will go with versions of French that developed in North America that is used by many ethnic groups (much like Afrikaans) Cajun French/Louisiana French is commonly spoken among Cajun French people, Native American people and African American people. No one owns that language. Cajun French/Louisiana French originated in Europe but developed on another continent. There is also Haitian Creole which is descended from European French but has major distinctions from the original language.
"White people appropriated Afrikaans" - it's literally just a weird version of Dutch. Last I checked the Netherlands was in Europe... you know, where white people come from. It's pretty telling that the vast majority of people who speak Afrikaans are either white or part white. Perhaps a better way of expressing that point would be to say the apartheid government politicised the language rather than to say white people appropriated it.
Afrikaans is a Dutch creol. Of course you can have a Dutch, Afrikaans conversation when one speaks slowly. Lots of videos online of Dutch and Afrikaans people speaking to one another.
the bald guy said the second time "it Makes me very angry that people think Afrikaans Is a white language, afrikaans is your language coloured" the afro guy said "if I speak Afrikaans like this people say it's a very beautiful language but if speak like this it's just a different version but we have to speak Afrikaans like this in school"
Jan van Riebeeck didn't settled in Cape Town.! He only came to build a reshmentstation station for the VOC. He never settled in South Africa. After he done his job he left never to return to South Africa again.
Keep telling yourselves that. Afrikaans is very much a white language. Over 85% of its vocabulary is of European origin, mainly Germanic, Romance or Greek. I prefer to call it Verwaterde Nederlands because the pronunciation and spelling have been simplified and it lacks the verb conjugation found in Dutch which itself is still significantly easier than French. Who speaks it is irrelevant, but ask any sane linguist and they'll tell you that it is a European language.
European doesn't necessarily mean 'white'. Spanish is a European too but Latino-American people aren't really considered 'white'. The origin of the language is mostly from Europe. Just as English is a European language too. The fact that people want to connect skincolor to everything is just wrong in my opinion.
Suzanne European always means "white". The Spanish also colonised and pushed the use of their language, but the original speakers, who are of Italian ancestry, were "white" and a lot of the modern speakers still are.
As a white Afrikaaner (with a deep love for my language), Afrikaans as a language is a multiracial. It borrows words from french, dutch, Malaysian, bantu languages and khoisan languages. Most people don’t understand how integrated and complex the history of the language is. Remember that the first written Afrikaans was in Arabic
Whatever you all say about this sh*t , afrikaans is NOT and HAS NOT NEVER been an INDIGENOUS african language. It's a European language. In Africa, we have language families, and Afrikaans is not part of them. By the way, if I were a South african politician I would propose a law to change that name ( Afrikaans ) .It should be called SOUTH AFRICAN DUTCH
Nothing wrong with Dutch. The Netherlands (Holland) is also one of the best countries in the world. Just google best countries to live in the world. And South African Dutch is actually the correct wording for Afrikaans.
No it's not a white language but a Cape Malay, a Griqua, a Boer and a Khoisan language! In the 21st century there are black influences too in that language like the word Kwêla which came from the Zulu or Xhosa word Khwela means climb! So Afrikaans is the second most diverse language in South Africa after English!!!
Oh please people, why must you live in denial. It's a derivative of Dutch (white language) we shortened and added words and even combined words now we want to lay claim to it.
South Africa has 11 Official languages. 9 of them are originally from South Africans. Not from foreiners that oppressed us. No one forced them to learn those 9 languages. Those 9 languages are what we can lay claim to. Don't come tell me that when the Dutch imposed a language on us that we did not we were unable to communicate. The same with English. Some of us were even brought over as slaves and had our native language stripped from us (Malaysian + Cape Malay) Durban has the biggest population of indians outside of India, but because they were also brought here as slaves their language is not recognised and so they to were forced to speak "the white languages".
1st I am not a politician, 2nd just after apartheid the new government had their own interest in mind. 3rd when the dust settled agreements were made for the preservation of the Khoisan with regards to the recognition of their culture and heritage, 4th Malaysian and Indian are not native African Languages so I presume that that would have been the reason for not preserving it however it is up to the community to preserve and to exercise the cultures. Are you really trying to pin stuff on this current government that we have, are you really that ignorant? I'm assuming that the Khoisan were the ones that told the settlers "hey your language is crap, let us make it better for you so we can also use it" then they taught it to their children and here you are,
Go back in your family tree as far as you can and then tell me what your ancestors were. You probably think coloureds just popped out of the sky with an Afrikaans language that is so unique and existed before any other languages existed here in South Africa
We were taught in school, a few years after Jan v. Riebeeck, landed in the Cape, there were so many different languages in the country that people found it difficult to understand one another. Then a certain Professor Pansegrouw created a new language, out of all the different languages, and called it Afrikaans, which nobody wanted to speak, and was called the kombuis taal. However, after some time-lapsed, it became the official Afrikaans language. So as I understand it then, it has nothing to do with any race or people, but a completely new language, of course, it has words in from English, German, Netherlands, Spanish etc. If I remember correctly, it has a bit of all spoken languages at that time. If I am not correct, please teach me otherwise, I am always prepared to learn.
That story is untrue. It was developed by the slaves initially and then over time the Dutch also began to speak it. The first instance of written Afrikaans is in Arabic script, as it was taught in Muslim schools to the coloured children. This was long before it was considered a language by anyone else.
Afrikaans is basically a Dutch Creole that has been standardized as an Independent Language. If Cape colored spoke afrikaans first then it's not an white language if Afrikaners spoke first then it's a white language.
All well said till the end. More colored people speak it so how can it be a white language? Indian people speak it too are you going to tel them as well? Jirre
there are no such things as white or black languages. Labeling it that way is racism. A language can be spoken by everyone no matter race. Just because it’s origin is European doesnt mean it’s a language based on skin colour
It’s odd because whenever I look up Afrikaans language to learn all I see Is White people speaking it, it’s like people of color have been erased from it😂
As a native Dutch speaker, it’s wrong to link a color to a specific language. If I may relate the situation to Dutch, it’s spoken by every ethnicity in multiple countries (Suriname, Nederland, België, and De Nederlandse Antillen (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) We all contributed to what the Dutch language is today, and it’s especially true for Afrikaans. Afrikaans should be used to open up economic opportunities as well as linguistic ones. It’d be cool if we had like a music collab with Afrikaanse artists and Dutch artists like we already do with Surinamese, Flemish, and the ABC islands. Exchange programs etc. Like Surinamese culture in Holland runs very deep even though it’s miles away!
@Kanker Neger Hou je bek man lol en ik ben geen Marokkaan. Ophouden met je rare stereotypes. Marokkanen hebben Nederland in meerdere wijzen verijkt idioot.
Afrikaans became a written language first in the Bo-Kaap, when two Imams translated koplesse from the Q'Uran into Afrikaans. Please remind your elders that the English introduced apartheid and took away liberty from people when the Cape was colonised in 1806. Afrikaans is wrongly bashed as the "oppressor's language. "
the Afrikaans language was created by cape Malay slaves who had Dutch owners. they created a variant of Dutch to be able to communicate to the owners and amongst each other as some where Malaysian and some indonesian. this is the story that was told to me by an older man in bokaap as the story was handed down to him by his past generations.
your version is true, but it was also forced upon natives 'Khoi-san' to learn afrikaans as the dutch settlers did not understand the !Xnu language and sumtimes felt threatened by not understanding it and prohibited the speaking thereof, hence the language of my ancestors eventually died.
Rowhan Celti not really. Them and the foreign slaves tried to speak the Dutch language for obvious reasons., and that was the origins of afrikaans. Dutch, kombuis Hollands which was scoffed at by the Dutch, to a respectable academic language called afrikaans. I think it's great.
Thank you, i got it, i've been asking people how did the coloured people of south africa are speaking Afrikaans if they claim to be the first bantu? and what is their original language? your comment helped me to understand
If you don't catch up what Cape Coloureds are, think of average mestizo latin americans who are speaking Spanish, believing in Catholics and having distinct culture different from both native america and Spain.
By the way coloureds have different ancestry which come from African,European and Asian. Can't people theirs poeste like you who, still thinks that all coloured people are black and white.
When esp cape colored people say they cant speak Afrikaans.... Isnt Afrikaans a compulsory subject at school in Capetown ? Be proud if you can speak multiple languages.... There is absolutely nothing wrong with understanding and speaking Afrikaans it doesn't make you less of a person.
This was an interesting video. I have been learning about the Afrikaans language and Afrikaners for the past month or so. I am also aware of the far-right white nationalists who think that they are being ethnically cleansed (which is a load of BS). On said topic of crazy far-right white nationalists, former joke of a President Donald Trump sympathized with the far-right in South Africa. I find it sad that crazies in any country will pretend that a language belongs to a single group. Language is language. Nobody owns it but anybody can learn it.
Afrikaans is more identical to Flemish than Dutch. That is a European language. Because it’s been in Africa for so long at this point you’d expect some recombination with all the languages in the area. In the same way that Zulu now has some English and Afrikaans words here and there but there is no denying that it’s an African language. The level of cognitive dissonance happening in the “coloured” community is mind boggling
Afrikaans is a language of European origin, no one can argue with that but putting a race to a language is really stupid. A lot of people in the world speak language that originate from a different racial group. Language is for everyone. Also claiming that the white stole Afrikaans from black enslaved people is stupid. Most Colored people have ancestry from the Boers and that is why they speak the language. It's not rocket science.
My gekleurde maats. All of you came and colonized with us Cape town your ancestor were of Asian origins from the spice trade. By that time most of you already spoke Afrikaans and were born into it! Some of you speak better and more beautiful Afrikaans then most of the Afrikaners and some of you have Dutch origins in your blood. So yes Afrikaans is your home to! Everyone needs a place of belonging and we accept you! You deserve this largely due to the fact that you guys were a population destined for no power but slavery and after all these years you have kept quite and and waited for your turn of prosperity in life, and the best part of all you stand with the white population no matter the past. This means there is more to you and certainly a bigger hart.
Stopit Cape Town stop bringing in the supposedly slave nonsense, all of South Africa knows your language is Afrikaans, it’s beautiful embrace it, stop trying to explain it away it’s going nowhere that’s Cape Town, and these two girls with their heavy Afrikaans accents 😂😂😂🙈 embrace it you might say u speak English but u sound Afrikaans like all other English speaking people in Cape Town, there’s nothing wrong with that.. I luv the Cape & its coloured people ❤️
J vD Is c orrect.and you are correct. And today still my gardener will insist talking in despised afrikaams language to me although he is Tswama. I respect him for that. NOBODY that I know in my Afrikaners circles ever said Afrikaans is not for the coloured and other poeples - nobody. If someone said that it can only come from politician's and below average reporting. The only thing that grieves me is why Afrikaans speaking coloured students will demonstrate at Afrikaans universities to change to language to emglish....this is beyond me and very disappointing. Because of this my daughter will study distance and overseas.
Why some people make all about race? In an era where we struggle with eradicating the racism, some claim to do so by.... making everything about race.... ?

South African English is also a white language. Theres nothing wrong with speaking and acknowledging that you speak a language that has deep 90% white european roots

Afrikaans is n kreoolse taal.
Afrikaans was never a white language. It is inbred in coloureds. The boers had to adapt because they could speak old dutch. The slaves had to create then own tongue which is Afrikaans. A Cape coloured colloquisam which is now a language.
Incase u diDnKnow .. the Spanish went to america with their language calling it "spanish" yet the slang so did a alota words and prounciations also changed as years past but still the language remain "spanish". The same applies to the "Portuguese" that went to Brazil. Yet here in South Africa we call "south africa Dutch" "Afrikaans" makes no sense people
The greatest irony is that the common thread in this video is the assumption that someone laid claim to someone else's language. By asserting whites laid claim to THEIR language they are laying claim to the language themself. Why do you need to alienate people talking the same language as you based on race? Aren't you out-rasisting those who you consider to be rasist?
I mean this is just childish denial. The dutch from the Netherlands understand Afrikaans. How many words in Afrikaans are indigenous to the continent? You will find its less than 3%. The best thing is for them to reconstruct it and co opt the San languages but of course they wont.
Then don't speak it Penelope Lopez. No one asked you to like it. Why on earth are you on this page then? How did you get here. Stop trolling for arguments and go find something spanish to listen to. We don't dis your language, do we? I am assuming that you are hispanic because your name implies that you are and if not hispanic then Spanish? Do you know that your language is native to a country known to be the greatest slave trader in the last 600 years? Do you know that right up until the 1800's the spanish were amongst the most prolific colonizers and modern day supressors of other people? If that is the reason you hate Afrikaans (because it belongs to a people that supposedly surpressed others), then may I suggest you change your name to Olga and learn Icelandic?
Charnell Coetzer Really ? It's a bullshit bitch Taal ,wat nie aan ons behoort nie. Am speaking it because it was forced upon us through fucking slavery ,smh .
Actually there is a fundamental error in this presentation. The Voortrekkers in the Great Trek came from the trekboers who spoke high Dutch and continued into the early 1900’s. The trekboers moved out of the cape peninsula before kitchen Dutch came into use and therefore didn’t speak it. The first Afrikaans Bible was published in 1933 and was translated from high Dutch. Nothing to do with the so-called kitchen Dutch spoken by the erstwhile slaves

We are afrika(a)n(s).

i’m a white afrikaaner too and you hit the nail on the head. Afrikaans is for all who can speak it
Afrikaans to me is basically Dutch Creole. Just as french Creole is to the Haitians or Portugese Creole is to the Brazilians in South America
Nobody has sole claim to it..
defin8ly agree with u...i just do not understand why some people are choosing 2 be ignorant about SA history
Then it is Dutch language finish
I once read in an English SA newspaper that English was the language of the original oppressor. How times have changed
Macedonian and Bulgarian are very similar languages with high amounts of mutual intelligibility. Same goes with Dutch and Afrikaans. Dutch and German. Dutch and English. Spanish and Portuguese.

Black american speak English for generation and so what ?? English is still a white european language just like afrikaans !!! 🙄 Com on...
haha i think that british and American English have just a big difference in the accent.

How come people would counsider Afrikaans a 'white language' but not English? English was brought over by the European colonizers too.
Afrikaans is one of the languages of the South African people, just as English and Zulu and Xsosa are. That's what it is. There's no color atttached to the language, only people.
Well Xhosa /zulu are native languages not Afrikaans, sadly.
@@lwazimorris4973 how can it be native if zulu and xhosa are from the nguni tribe who originate from Northern Africa and Not Southern Africa.

@@lwazimorris4973 nguni's is the collective name of the southern african bantu groups. All black africans are bantu.
Now this is the true satisfying answer. Thanks for this.
Peace.
Confusion here, they lay claim theSan origins but Sabs never spoke Afrikaans, and then claim Afrikaans as San,which is which?
A language doesn't have a skin colour but emerges and survives among certain races or etnic groups. A great example from Europe is Hungarian which was originally spoken by Asians but now most of the speakers are white.
That’s why this video was made, white people have painted Afrikaaners as a white language, this is about recognizing for what it is. A South African language
That's wrong. Hungarian was never spoken by Asians.
@@Pyovali Hungarian language diverged from its Ugric relatives in the first half of the 1st millennium BC, in western Siberia east of the southern Urals.

@N.majola grow up
@@matto6195 it's okay if they wanna claim it's not native because of white settlers.
Afrikaans has Dutch roots come on now!!! That's a fact.
Glenssuos Chavacano in Philippines has spanish roots
And English has Old Norse roots. Doesn’t make it Scandinavian.
Mnr. Volkstaat i mean English is a mix of multiple languages, old norse, french, German etc

@@christophercano4809 So they were the nice colonizers? Just because they weren't as cruel doesn't mean they weren't cruel.
All languages share a ethnic or race background but language are not defined by how they became meaning they can be adopted by any race or ethnicity.
Yesss exactly
Lekka! Afrikaans behoort aan Suid Afrika en sy mense, bruin, wit en wie ookal wil saampraat. I understand everything you just said as a native dutch, so yes it is a white language
Exactly.
Blah blah blah rainbows and puppies.
Dutch is a European language, no matter who's speaking it.
This is like saying that Portuguese is a south American language
Well said
My great grandma born sometime early 1900s spoke fluent Dutch but her daughter my grandma born in die 1930-40s spoke afrikaans...
Why I mentioned some towns having Dutch names in EC like Nieu-Bethesda or Dordrecht is cause the Dutch colonists obviously named some of them and some of these towns were starting points for the groot trek of which most spoke Dutch hence Oranje Vrijstaat Not Oranja Vrystaat and Zuid-Afrikaanche Not Suid-Afrikaanse Republic.(afr dictionary had not yet been created)
In the Transvaal as it was called by the English at the time they wanted to make Dutch the language of the courts and Afrikaans the common language in later years.

I will go with versions of French that developed in North America that is used by many ethnic groups (much like Afrikaans)
Cajun French/Louisiana French is commonly spoken among Cajun French people, Native American people and African American people. No one owns that language. Cajun French/Louisiana French originated in Europe but developed on another continent. There is also Haitian Creole which is descended from European French but has major distinctions from the original language.
Absolutely fascinating - thought I knew a bit about the linguistic history of SA but realise I know less than nothing! Great video..
Can those who speak Afrikaan understand those who speak Dutch?
Afrikaans is a Dutch creol. Of course you can have a Dutch, Afrikaans conversation when one speaks slowly. Lots of videos online of Dutch and Afrikaans people speaking to one another.
Subtitles for the parts spoken in Afrikaans would be helpful for non Afrikaans speakers 😊

Jan van Riebeeck didn't settled in Cape Town.! He only came to build a reshmentstation station for the VOC. He never settled in South Africa. After he done his job he left never to return to South Africa again.
you girls are stunning! I wish I was still living in the Cape man such beauty out there!

European always means "white". The Spanish also colonised and pushed the use of their language, but the original speakers, who are of Italian ancestry, were "white" and a lot of the modern speakers still are.

@@gevoel8293 Great.
And English was originally a pidgin that we've made into our own. All languages evolve.
I actually just found out what a "pidgion" language is.
But coloured and white Afrikaans are a little bit different
Afrikaans belongs to coloureds our mix ancestors created it from the force upon dutch

If y’all don’t realize we are all mixed at this point and have been migrating for CENTURIES you need to get out more. It’s a mixed language as used in soooo many places in the world due to spice trade
when it comes to praising and recodnizing a ''coloured'' everybody (even our own kind) is a critic
Afrikaans is 99% old dutch, colored isn’t a race.technically Afrikaans is a European language with malaysian words
I enjoy these discussions,thank you .
Ek praat Afrikaans!!! Ek love dit 💙 my ma was Afrikaans mense
1:19 Yeah... and dutch people should immediately stop speaking their native language for avoiding appropriation.
the Afrikaans language was created by cape Malay slaves who had Dutch owners. they created a variant of Dutch to be able to communicate to the owners and amongst each other as some where Malaysian and some indonesian. this is the story that was told to me by an older man in bokaap as the story was handed down to him by his past generations.
your version is true, but it was also forced upon natives 'Khoi-san' to learn afrikaans as the dutch settlers did not understand the !Xnu language and sumtimes felt threatened by not understanding it and prohibited the speaking thereof, hence the language of my ancestors eventually died.
Coloured people are a mix of black and white people so I have no idea why they say Afrikaans is their language
It was created by our people sweetheart,by the Cape Malay uneducated poes.
By the way coloureds have different ancestry which come from African,European and Asian. Can't people theirs poeste like you who, still thinks that all coloured people are black and white.
as a very proud Ethiopian women when i get asked such questions "do you speak afrikkans" LOL i crack up (sorry ).
Tell this to the ANC. We as Afrikaners know all this, and we are not the people having problems with it.
I think English is worse right!
I would rather speak Afrikaans than English.
The first form of Afrikaans was spoken by the coloureds. The first written form also by them.
Afrikaans is a South African language that belongs to Afrikaners (white Afrikaans 1st language people) and coloureds.
What is your opinion of more ‘socially white’ Cape Coloureds like Demi-Leigh Nel Peters? Do you think they embrace their culture openly?
I think Demi-Leigh is white not coloured
A newspaper article stated that she's Coloured. I'm confused. :/
Demi Leigh isnt coloured.
Carey Queen she’s listed as Cape Coloured on Wiki and in article.
Let's say Afrikaans is a 'white language'.
What does that make English?
White?
It is also a white language? What aren't you getting?
The woman at 0:53 looks a lot like Rihanna.
Why some people make all about race?
In an era where we struggle with eradicating the racism, some claim to do so by.... making everything about race.... ?
Can we stop already with calling it “AfRiKaANs” as if the language came from the continent of AFRICA . its just OLD DUTCH ! NEDERLANDS ! HOLLANDS ! Evolved into what they speak right now !
Yes it comes from Dutch...did anybody denied it. Call it African Dutch if you like. No Afrikaans person will deny it!
@@gevoel8293 it should be called Old Dutch.
It really don’t makes any sense calling it after the whole continent 🤦🏿♂️
@@kelvinbuobi1672 Modern Dutch evolved from the 16th century Dutch so both Afrikaans and Dutch came from modern Dutch. ;) Like I don't even think anybody cares if you would call it South African Dutch? Because that is what it is.
@@kelvinbuobi1672 Afrikaans was born in Africa
@@christophercano4809 NO “afrikaans” was not born in Africa, the dutch language evolved into what you guys are speaking there now, its not a complete new language !
Calling a laughing that sounds and is european “afrikaans” (after the whole continent) sounds stupid and unlogical !
Afrikaans is an African language that has deep roots in a european (white) language. More than 90% of the language is white. So I dont understand this question. South African English is also a white language. Theres nothing wrong with speaking and acknowledging that you speak a language that has deep 90% white european roots
B*lsh*t
It is a white language do ya study its nothing more than a Dutch variation south Africans have their own variation learned from the Dutch kitchen Dutch exactly what she said a way Dutch could lay claim to the land threw language just cause you add I dialect or slang its still dutch
(Mixed Race) mean, 2 different race made a baby. Which mean the 'black' race and another race made baby in this case, what it mean is that the 'black' race is a race of it's own and not mixture.
Its not like english isnet a colonial language😁! So whats the point of that? Just speak it as colored or Black person.
Afrikaans is n kreoolse taal.
Afrikaans was never a white language. It is inbred in coloureds. The boers had to adapt because they could speak old dutch. The slaves had to create then own tongue which is Afrikaans. A Cape coloured colloquisam which is now a language.
It is a Dutch creol. Afrikaans is Dutch made easy. Simplified grammar, here and there a few natives words but it is 85% Dutch.
Hoe kom jy aan jou Van'surname?
Incase u diDnKnow .. the Spanish went to america with their language calling it "spanish" yet the slang so did a alota words and prounciations also changed as years past but still the language remain "spanish". The same applies to the "Portuguese" that went to Brazil. Yet here in South Africa we call "south africa Dutch" "Afrikaans" makes no sense people
Afrikaans is for everyone, but it’s from Europe... It’s basically Dutch.
South Africa only country that has Coloureds and they seen by the world as black but in SA seen as coloureds, South Africa is too confused
I mean this is just childish denial. The dutch from the Netherlands understand Afrikaans. How many words in Afrikaans are indigenous to the continent? You will find its less than 3%. The best thing is for them to reconstruct it and co opt the San languages but of course they wont.
They are not claiming the language, only talking about their role in the forming of it.
They won't because coloureds think that they are white ,idiot people. I hate that Fuck language .
And coloured people don't want you either. Back to NIGERIA BITCH!
It's not a white language or a black language. It's a language. Period.
Are the African people in South Africa called coloureds? I just keep seeing that a lot in the comment section. Just asking?
Coloured is someone who is mixed so black people aren’t considered as coloured person in South Africa.
1:19 she's a beautiful genius. They're still trying to be AFRICAN
