Are you still happy with your brother? I just bought one last Sunday and this is Saturday and I’ve only made one project with the machine and now I cannot get it to a good stitch. The thread pulls out as if it’s not even threaded correctly I have threaded it and un threaded it and rewound the Bob and so many times I’m ready just to sit it out on the curb and hope somebody takes it off my hands hands.
I always recommend this Brother sewing machine. I have its precursor, the SQ9185, and I love it. A couple of my friends have the SQ9285 and they love theirs.
This video looks like it’s about 10 months old….I have the sq9285 and love it. I have never had any issues with it. I purchased it to make my first full size quilt. It took a while but I got the quilt made. When I just do general sewing I do not put the table on for me it is in my way and the legs do not always stay in place. It is a quiet sewing machine. I am a brother girl at this time I have an se400 combo machine that’s about 15 years old. I love it. I also have a ve2300 oh my gosh it is amazing. In the past I have had other brother machines that have been passed on to others. Growing up I learned to sew on my grandmas singer machine it was a good machine no problems with it. I wish I had it now for sentimental reasons. I enjoyed your video and subscribed.
Thank you for comparing these two machines! I've been quilting with a Necchi 535FA (from the 80s), but it has been a chore. If money were no object, I know exactly which Juki I'd get, but until I have a couple thousand dollars to spare (ha!), I've been trying to decide between these two exact machines. Looking forward to more in the series!
I am happy to see this video. I have the Brother. I am trying to figure out if I am asking too much of my machine. I was sewing something the thickness of 2 cheap drying mats. I made several bags from the Dollar Tree dish drying mats and I am not sure if it's too much? I did break a needle. I have tried other feet including the walking foot. I have tried different needles. I even made sure not to push or pull, just letting the machine do the work but it sounds like it is sticking or clicking on something. I made 2 successfully and no issues. It was the 3rd bag that the needle broke.
I used my instruction manual to change to quilting foot on the brother (same you got there); dropped the feed dogs. Turned on machine, and dropped my needle. But when trying to sew, I just get an error. Matching straight stitched like a dream. Wanted to practice free motion quilting and then hopefully quilt a baby quilt I have the top done on. But, it won't work for me. Any pointers on this? Error is E1 which I looked up in the manual but neither suggestion could be correct because I used my pedal and even shut the machine back off, unplugged the pedal and tried putting the needle back down and using the button on the machine to start sewing (slowed down the speed quite a bit). Get the same error. Such a bummer if I am gonna have to pay out the nose to have someone else quilt it.
Hi Mom, writing from Madrid (Spain). I've been watching at your several videos about the comparison between the brother and the singer. They are really nice and helpful, thank you. The point is that I am trying to chose between these 2 brands. I bought the Brother FS70WT (which is almost the same as in your video) and that was complete fail because it really didn't work properly as when using the straight stitch it went on making loops under the fabric. I checked several times the tutorial videos and even the instructions book but, no way, impossible to get a clean straight stitch. So I returned it and now I am thinking in buying the Singer 7285Q, so it would really be helpful for me if you gave your real opinion on which one is better when sewing (smooth, silent, clean stiches, easy for patchwork...) Thank you for a realy quick answer as Xmas is coming and Santa is waiting for my decision.😁
That’s an incredibly hard choice! For myself, I would go with the Brother. The Singer does have a couple of things I would love to see on the Brother, like that extra large extension table. But, the Brother just seems to run a little smoother. And it has a few decorative stitches I know I’ll use that the Singer doesn’t. Even though I have not done any free motion quilting, I plan to try in the future. The droppable feed dogs will work better for this than the feed dog cover on the Singer. At least I think so. And finally, I love having the alphabets. I like to stitch my name and date on my quilts. However, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in either one. Hope that helps 😊
@@momdoesstuff Hi Mom, thank you, yes, you helped a lot and mainly confirmed what I think. Next week I will go to a sewing machine shop that deals with several brands including the 2 of your video and listen to their advices and also I want to go to another that only sells HUSQVARNA which is a swedish brand and swedish manufacturing that apparently is a good investment. I'll tell you about it if you want though, if you have any comment before I go, just let me know. Best regards
I thought that you were going to let us know which one you like best. How is it as far as quilting goes… please let us know, my wife would like to know before she buys a new one and she trust you.. Thank you so much
I honestly love both machines, so I don't think she'd be disappointed with either. If I had to pick one, I'd pick the Brother. I like that is has an alphabet for 'signing' your quilts. Hope that helps!
I'm having the worst time picking a machine! A friend suggested a Baby Lock but that's a bit steep for my budget. I keep going back to this Brother machine. If you had to recommend a machine for quilting, which would it be?
They all do a good job of piecing the top, but if you want to quilt the layers yourself instead of having to send it out to a long armer, you need as much throat space as possible. I love this Brother myself.
The Brother monogramming foot is also a satin stitch foot. You don't want to run that Singer with the plastic presser foot down on the feed dogs. That ruins presser feet. And then you grind the metal foot on the Brother machine. Those are not buttons below the three character indicator keys. Otherwise a good video. The Singer "automatic tension" is just a wishful frivolous term that Singer hopes some people will believe.
I agree! I don't usually run a machine without fabric unless I'm trying to demonstrate something. And, also agree, the 'auto tension' can't be trusted. Thanks for watching!
This video helped me. I was gearing towards the singer, but I went for the brother.
Thank you for the post

"Not your manual because you didn't get that.." Informative. Great comparison. Thank you.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!
Excellent presentation. I have to watch many more videos to learn how to use the SQ 9285. I'm still learning to how add thread.
I just purchased the Brother SQ9285 and will be watching your videos to learn to use it.

Oh, yes, a Juki would be amazing!
Thanks for this video! 👍 One remark: The newer/(European?) version of the Singer comes with a printed manual.

Hmmm, have you tried using a longer stitch length? I might also try a denim or jeans needle.
Mom, which do you prefer?

Is your presser foot lowered?
E1 means the presser foot is raises. Make sure the lever is kn the downward position

which one can sew thicker material ?

ok, you are my new mom. thank you
Aww, you’re so sweet! I’m glad it was helpful!
I have had the singer ..but I decided to by a brother
I'm excited to learn more about that Brother!
