  • "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" is a classic disco song by the Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released as a single on October 1, 1979, and later included on their seventh studio album, "Super Trouper," which was released in the same year. The song remains one of ABBA's most iconic and enduring hits.
The song was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the male members of ABBA, and the lyrics were penned by the band's female members, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The lyrics express a sense of yearning and loneliness, with the singer asking for a man to arrive and fulfill their desires. The repetitive "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" chorus reflects this sense of urgency and longing, which is a common theme in disco music.
"Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" is a quintessential disco track, characterized by its driving beat, infectious melody, and use of synthesizers and electronic elements. The song's arrangement features a prominent bassline, rhythmic percussion, and a catchy keyboard riff, which are all hallmarks of the disco genre. It's a dancefloor classic and was a staple in discotheques during the late 1970s.
The song was a commercial success for ABBA. It reached the top of the charts in several countries, including the United Kingdom, where it became their ninth No. 1 hit. It also performed well in various music charts around the world, solidifying ABBA's status as one of the most successful pop groups of the era.
"Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" was one of the first music videos ever made by ABBA. The video features the band performing the song in a studio, intercut with scenes of various characters visiting a nightclub. The video reflects the nightlife and disco culture of the late 1970s.
The song has had a lasting impact and remains popular to this day. It has been covered by various artists and featured in numerous films, television shows, and commercials. Its enduring popularity is a testament to ABBA's ability to create catchy, timeless music.
The song's title and chorus have become iconic and are often referenced in popular culture. It has been used in TV series, movies, and even in the title of the musical "Mamma Mia!" which is based on ABBA's music.

You're close really.Well officially First time was to black hip hopers The Fugees who got permission to sample 'Name of the Game" in 1996 for 'Rumble in the jungle".And also "Edeleweiss" sampled 'SOS" (late '80) without permission but supposedly only by one of Abba's publishers not by the Abba guys who were also the songwritters..

Madonna personally sought permission from its songwriters, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Her PA travel to Stockholm for a face to face meeting with Benny And Björn with a handwritten letter from Madonna and a recording.

The Fugees and Madonna are the only artists who were permitted to sample ABBA tracks. Madonna sampled the synth break from "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for her massive 2005 hit "Hung Up." Prior to that, ABBA allowed The Fugees to sample their song "The Name of the Game" for the track "Rumble in the Jungle" due to Björn Ulvaeus's appreciation of the artistic quality and cultural impact of the Fugees' music. Ulvaeus acknowledged that hip-hop was a significant genre and felt that the Fugees' respectful approach to using the sample aligned with ABBA's standards. This decision marked the first time (out of two) ABBA permitted their music to be sampled, highlighting the mutual respect between the artists.

ABBA had 9 UK no. 1 singles and 19 (21, if you count the singles from "Voyage") top 20 singles. They had 8 consecutive UK no. 1 albums (9 if you count "Voyage") and their first greatest hits album, Gold (19 tracks) topped the UK charts in 1992, 1999 and 2008. Their second greatest hits album, More ABBA Gold, which came out in 1993 had a further 20 tracks. The hit stage musical, Mamma Mia, is based on the music of ABBA and this show has spawned two Hollywood movies. Their final album "Voyage" was released in 2021 after a 40-year hiatus.
Madonna sampled the riff from this song on her hit "Hung Up".

ABBA had all kind of pop hits including Disco, soft rock, prog rock, ballads, anthems etc. with lots of different musical influences from around the World which they blended together in their unique and inimitable way.
For Disco try "Voulez Vous" (Live) and "Summer night city"
I would say try to react to TV or live performances as they had great stage presence (especially the girls, Agnetha and Frida) and it was a world away from the highly manufactured choreographed (mimed or autotuned) performances we say a lot of today. (Although of course some TV performances were mimed as well as sung live)

Nice to see you return with your second reaction to ABBA songs
"Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight)" (1979)
is a song influenced by American disco,
after the success of the Bee Gees and the movie 'Saturday night fever" from the year before
In this song you can see part of the volume and range of voice that the blonde Agnetha has
ABBA was preparing their 1979 Tour of America and Europe,
in the previous one , They recorded this song and filmed the official video
These is an official video in which all ABBA is seen in the recording studio,
including staff musicians (bass, guitarist and drummer)
and sound engineer Michel Tretow at the controls,
creator of the well-known 'ABBA sound' with his innovative 'wall of sound' multiplication technique
(an adaptation of the works of Phill Spector)
    These is a short versión
in last year ABBA did a new official lyric video of
    "Gimme gimme gimme" full versión
    with the original instrumental bridge
The introduction and the instrumental ending,
that characteristic sound of Benny's keyboards,
is what Madonna used for her worlwide hit
"Hung Up" in 2005, 26 years later...
(with the permission of the composers Björn and Benny,
    granting them share the credits)
Surely for the latter, with most than 400 million views,
the original video with the shorts versión is the second official ABBA video
with the most views on UA-cam ,
and the same un Spotify with more than 600 millon views
    (in both behind "Dancing Queen"))
and also for this last reason, surely
"Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight)"
is much more popular now than in its time
when it was released it was #3 in the UK, it wasn't even released in the US
now also a centerpiece in the 'disco section' at the new ABBA Voyage concerts in London UK since May 2022
Another interesting date is that these is one of songs tgat ABBA recorded in spanish:
"Dame Dame Dame" (1980) and ABBA performed it in an interview to Spanish TV
Thank you again for these video
I hope to see you with more ABBA songs
    One sugestión could be
    "Mamma Mia" (1975/1976)
or "Take a chance on me" (1977/1978)
    two banger songs
or the classic folk ballads and worlwide hits
    "Fernando" (1976) & "Chiquitita" (1979)
My best regards to You You from
    Buenos Aires , Argentina 🇦🇷
    South America

Madonna sampled the keyboard synth melody for her hit 'Hung Up' ......probably where you recognize that sound

It's a shame, there's a new lyric video with the old video in the background, but 4:51 with bass+synthi middle part.
The already suggested song The Name Of The Game would be an R'n'B surprise for you or the disco title Voulez Vous (transl. do you want) with the Earth, Wind And Fire brass. Keep It Up!!!

The video used the short radio edit of the song. The album has a longer version of the track. The intro to the song was sampled by Madonna for her song "Hung Up."

¡Dame!Dame!Dame! (Amor Esta Noche)..............is ABBA's Spanish version, which is on their all-Spanish album from 1980..........."Gracias Por La Musica".
    - Canadian singer, Damhnait Doyle, did a slower cover version.
    - Madonna, asked the permission of Björn and Benny, and was allowed to sample the rift on her 2005 hit,
    "Hung Up"

Abba have never allowed sampling ever until Madonna personally showed up in Sweden to ask them for the main hook for her album that she was working on - she is probably the only one that they ever let use their elements.

I appreciate ABBA now though didn't like them so much when I was younger. They were very popular in Europe/UK/Australia and NZ back in the day (70s/. Then they suddenly became uncool but became popular again after they were featured in a couple of very successful Australian movies in the 90s: "Priscilla Queen of The Desert" and "Muriel's Wedding". Then of course Benny and Bjorn put together the stage play based around ABBA songs which later became a movie. Songs/videos that would be good for you to react to included their first big hit which won them the Eurovision Song Quest at the beginning of their international career - "Waterloo" and another nearer the end of their time when the couples were breaking up in RL but still performing together: "The Winner Takes It All". Waterloo is fun and bouncy but The Winner Takes it All is very poignant - especially given that it was a real breakup song for the writer and the main singer. But yes loads to choose from in their extensive catalogue of hits.

ABBA fans should petition UMG/Vevo to put the proper full length version with the video. You're right, it is over too quick because this is the shortened version that has the sublime instrumental break cut out of it. Dreadful decision by UMG/Vevo. The full length one was recently given a official 'lyric video' but hardly any reactors pick it.
