    The Mother of a Traitor
Maxim Gorky, born as Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, was a prominent Russian writer and political activist. Known as the founder of socialist realism, his works vividly depicted the struggles and aspirations of the working class. Gorky's most famous works include "The Lower Depths," a play exploring the lives of the destitute, and the autobiographical novel "My Childhood." He received international acclaim and was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Gorky's contributions to literature and his commitment to social justice made him an influential figure in both literary and political circles, leaving a lasting impact on Russian literature and society.
In a besieged city, enemy forces have surrounded the inhabitants, creating a bleak and terrifying atmosphere. The fires of the enemy's camp and their songs and laughter only intensify the despair within the city. The enemy's destructive actions have left the city exposed and vulnerable, with daily attacks causing suffering and anguish. The nights are particularly harrowing, filled with groans and cries that echo through the darkness. The city's people live in constant fear, their hope fading as they gaze upon the moon and the menacing mountains. Amidst this gloom, a mysterious woman draped in black silently moves through the streets, her presence adding to the sense of unease and uncertainty.
Monna Marianna, the mother of a heartless son leading the enemy forces, wanders through the besieged city at night. People fear and avoid her, mistaking her for the incarnation of death. One day, she encounters another grieving woman praying by a corpse near the city walls. This moment connects them in their shared suffering.
The mother of a slain man, who died honorably fighting for their country, expresses gratitude for his sacrifice. She confesses her initial fear that he might betray their city due to his light-hearted nature. Hearing this, Marianna, the mother of the enemy leader, covers her face and continues on her way. The next day, Marianna approaches the defenders of the city and offers herself to be killed or asks for the gates to be opened so she can join her son. The defenders, recognizing her love for her son and her distress, decide it would be dishonorable to punish her for her son's sins. They believe her son has forgotten her, and they consider her remaining in the city, knowing her son's actions, as a punishment worse than death. Marianna agrees, acknowledging the greater torment of her situation.
The gates of the city are opened, allowing Marianna to leave and depart from her blood-soaked homeland. Reluctantly, she walks away, paying homage to the fallen defenders and expressing her disdain for weapons. As she moves further, her figure shrinking in the distance, the onlookers from the city walls sense a shift in their own spirits as their despair and hopelessness seem to leave with her.
Halfway on her journey, Marianna pauses, removes her cloak's hood, and gazes back at the city. In the enemy's camp, she catches their attention, and they approach her, curious about her identity and origin. Without hesitation, she reveals that their leader is her son, and not a single soldier doubts her words. They join her, singing praises of her son's intelligence and bravery, while she listens proudly, knowing that her son could be nothing less.
Finally, she stands before her son, whom she had cherished even before his birth. He stands adorned in silk and velvet, his weapons adorned with precious stones. In his arrogance and thirst for glory, he declares his intent to capture the city the following day, claiming that sparing it until now had hindered his rise to fame. Marianna reminds him that every stone in the city remembers them as children, hinting at the deep roots and connections they share.
Marianna and her son engage in a conversation about the nature of heroes and destruction. Her son believes that destruction holds its own glory, citing examples of famous city destroyers. However, Marianna reminds him that the names of cities outlive those of destroyers. Their conversation continues until sunset, with Marianna's head sinking lower as her son remains oblivious to the opposition of a mother towards death and destruction.
Marianna realizes that her son is negating her reason for existence and is blinded by the allure of glory. Unbeknownst to him, a mother can be clever and ruthless in protecting the lives she creates. With a bowed head, she gazes through the opening of her son's opulent tent, witnessing the city where she first experienced the miracle of life and the pain of childbirth, now thirsting for destruction.
As the sun sets, the city is bathed in crimson light, resembling a wounded entity with life flowing out of its wounds. The darkness falls upon the houses, where people dare not light candles to avoid attracting the enemy's attention. The streets are filled with the stench of death, and the whispers of those awaiting their fate fill the air. Marianna sees everything that is dear to her, all of her fellow citizens, silently awaiting her decision, and she feels a deep sense of motherhood towards all of them.
Clouds descend upon the city as the son contemplates launching an attack if the night is dark enough. The mother urges him to rest and recalls his joyful and kind nature as a child, but he declares his love for glory and shows no desire for children due to the fear of their potential harm. She realizes his barrenness of compassion, comparing him to a streak of lightning.
He lays his head in his mother's lap, resembling a child, and as he dozes off, she covers him with her black cloak. In a drastic act, she plunges a knife into his heart, ending his life. With his corpse at the feet of bewildered sentries, she proclaims that she has done all she could as a citizen for her country, but as a mother, she will remain with her son. Seeing no purpose in her own life, she takes the same knife, still warm with their blood, and pierces her own breast, driven by her aching heart.
The themes present in this story include the love and sacrifice of a mother, the devastating effects of war, the conflict between personal and national loyalties, and the contrast between creation and destruction.
Figures of speech used in the story include similes, such as "like a myriad red eyes" to describe the flames peering through the darkness, and "like a fish stirring in the depths of a river" to depict the woman moving through the darkness. Metaphors are also employed, like "the incarnation of the city's misfortune" to describe the woman, and "stones are dumb unless man makes them speak" to emphasize the importance of human agency in shaping history.
The moral of the story revolves around the destructive consequences of pursuing glory and the unwavering love and protection of a mother. It also highlights the potential for mothers to possess cunning and ruthlessness when the lives of their loved ones are at stake.
Narrative techniques used include vivid descriptions to create a sense of atmosphere and tension, dialogue to reveal the thoughts and motivations of the characters, and a gradual build-up of conflict leading to a dramatic climax. The story also employs symbolism, such as the black cloak representing misfortune and the knife representing the ultimate act of sacrifice.
