There are so many spells that are used everyday. People have forgotten that making a "wish" then blowing out the birthday cake candle's is candle magic, wishing on a falling star--spell, and the list goes on. I LOVE when a "good Christian" woman tries to argue with me that Halloween is a pagan holiday but Christmas with all the elves, Santa, evergreens, candles, etc is not....

The type of Christian that thinks Halloween is bad for being pagan tends to think the same thing about elves and Santa. Worse, even, because Santa & co are trying to distract from Jesus and derail the modern Christian's biggest holiday, while Halloween is just...there. I remember "Santa Day" being used to dismiss people that celebrated all the non-Christian aspects of the holiday.

All the Holidays are a mixture of yes old Pagan beliefs and Christian beliefs as well as cultures and tribal customs of our people's when they converted to Christianity. For instance Easter eggs come from old Anglo Saxon culture because eggs were a symbol of the God Estra a Anglo Saxon fertility goddess these symbols do not exist in non Anglo Cultures for instance in Hispanic cultures Easter is called Pasquale or Passover in English and it's more like our Thanksgiving and there are no colorful eggs. Halloween actually gets most of its traditions from the time when the Puritans ruled England and banned all holidays as pagan. Common people would dress up in disguises and go to rich peoples houses and demand a trick or a treat, basically telling the Lord to open his wine cellar or he'd get a brick through his window hence trick or treat and best of all no one could be arrested by the Puritans as everyone was wearing a disguise which became costumes. Alot of the pagan influences in Christmas have to do with the worship of Freya who the Germans loved so much due to her rowdy wild parties every year that many German communitys only finally converted because the Church agreed to turn a blind eye to the celebrations which they viewed as pagan but hey it got people in the church on Sunday so why not ignore this one holiday tradition.

There is a long history of using charms, incantations, protection symbols, and all manner of "magic" among rank and file Christians through history. When written about, there is a differentiation among those using such between "diabolic" magic and "natural" magic. It's a fascinating subject.

In it, he briefly discusses practices considered "natural" such as astrology, charms, etc. that were differentiated from a compact with the devil. Good histories on Christian mysticism and histories of early Christian blendings with pagan practices, and the Jewish and Christian extra-biblical works that became "magic" works or Grimoires are good launching places as well, since well-edited editions give bibliographies for further study.

I grew up as Catholic and moved houses a lot. At every new house, my family would invite a Catholic priest to bless the house with eight blessed medals. The medals would bear the likeness of St. Benedict on one side, and the Benedictine cross on the other. We'd bury or hide the medals in two concentric squares, one around the house and one at the edges of the property. The main purpose of this being to ward off demons.
We had a second ritual that would take place at the start of the new year, where we'd write in chalk above every entrance to the house "20+C+M+B+21" (numbers changing by year).

One of the best things that ever happened for my Paganism was borrowing a scholarly translation of a bible that had the Greek, Aramaic, and English side by side in columns. No no no. Kesheph is actually more like an umbrella term that refers to any of the spiritual practices that had anything to do with gentile practices and the invoking of gentile gods, or even so much as anything not sanctioned under Mosiac law and not practiced by the Levite Priesthood. For an Israelite anything that gentiles partook of that the Levites did not partake of was by definition "evil." Because from the Israelite perspective the pagan gods are the watchers from before the flood, who are directly rebelling against and corrupting the things of the Most High, and the familiar spirits of the pagans are the disembodied souls of the watcher's hybrid offspring. So anything like spells, potions, enchantments, conjurings, circles and things of that nature have ties to the watchers and are therefore an offense to the Creator. One of the ten commandments is Thou shalt not use the name of Adonoi in vain, or more aptly, to misuse or misappropriate. This includes adding the God of Israel to a pantheon, or using the tetragrammaton in spells or incantations after what the gentiles use in their practices, which equates to blaspheming the divine name, which is a sever offense in Judaism.

I think a more accurate term would probably be mysticism. Like the word witchcraft is a very word with a long and complex cultural history so when is does and doesn’t apply is a conversation in its self. But I personally wouldn’t refer to a Shinto Priest purifying something witchcraft and I think it falls in the same category.

It's suitable to the uninclined as a very base umbrella term, however. Ironic, though, that the misnomer is intrinsic of ye'olde Christian mentality -- that which they do not (willingly or otherwise) understand they slap a label on it and condemn it while doing the very same thing under another name.

The thing that I can argue against that is that traditionally, Christians would not call themselves witches or what they do witchcraft or spells, due to the negative connotations that those things have not only in the traditions, but in the books as well. I'm from a very Catholic family, and they wouldn't use the evil eye, hexing or casting a spell, but they say that you actually can cause that to happen to that person and to be careful to wish bad things upon people.

Witchcraft is no different than the ceremonies performed in churches. Journaling in your devotional, singing hymns in the choir, bowing at the altar, using anointing oils and holy water, partaking in the communion, hanging crosses and other religious symbols in your home, celebrating religious holidays (which are rooted in Pagan tradition) It is the SAME EXACT THING WITCHES DO, it just has a different name for it.

Just because some Chrisians dabbled in or adopted witchcraft practices does not mean it's endorsed by Jesus or the apostles. A sin still a sin regardless of whether certain Christians attempt to justify it or not. They can wave their hand around all they want but if Christ himself looks down and says no then they have no excuse.

Personally, Christian craft has never appealed to me post my departure from religion, and leaves a bad taste in my mouth because of the trappings. Having come free of Christianity, the last thing I want to really do is try to reclaim it via craft, like so many other Chaotes seem to be interested in doing. All power to them, but it seems like there's this overwhelming revival happening and it makes me rather uncomfortable.
There's of course several examples of it in the Bible itself, which surprises me they don't just outright call it magick. But as much as I bemoan this transition, I much rather see a church center around excitement and the creation of new ritual, than one sitting in stagnation and denial of its roots.

Okay, the mark of the Cross isn't just a Christian symbol, and it was banned by early (First, through fourth century) Christians, because it was kinda the thing that killed God. That's why Constantine adopted the ChiRho. In (What we now know as) England, Crosses represented many things, and were differentiated by different cruciform symbolism. For instance, the breaks in Keltic knotwork where one bight passes under another? Keltic crosses often had the upright pass behind the crosspiece, for some reason (Lost to time.) The cross with the Circle around it seems to have derived from a roadsign for a Buttercross. That's a tiered cairn that farmers would gather around at a crossroads, with steps around it to put out staples for sale, like fresh ground flour, eggs, and dairy, hence the name. (Many modern cities have elabourate marketplaces, and gothic flying butresses over ye olde buttercross. It was originally just a stick in a pile of rocks.) If you saw a stick, with a crosspiece, and a circle around it sticking up over that hill, you knew that there was a Crossroads, where you might be able to pick up some butter, and maybe find a milkmaid to play slap and tickle with behind yon haystack. There's stories about this (Surely in Jest) that predate the Normans, and their Domesday book, let alone the Christanization of King William (The 1st)s Kingdom of England. It's like the Schwastika, used all over the planet, until somebody tried to take over the world, and ruined it for everyone. (Also, it wasn't a rune in Teutonic symbolism. It was a pattern for laying out Bar Runes for various purposes. Without those runes, it's essentially meaningless.)

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 3 роки тому

The buttercross may have been where Crossbuns came from. As in the Mother Goose nursery rhyme "Hot Cross Buns." The mother would do the daily grind, bake enough bread to feed the family, then make buns with the rest to sell at the Buttercross. There's no reason to mark them with a Phillips head for baking, of course they didn't have sugar drizzled all over them back in the dark ages, because if they even had sugar, they didn't sell it for a penny, or 2. (The modern recipes are basically Fairy cakes)We don't know, because this is just the sort of common stuff people didn't write down until Monastaries started showing up all over the place.

    1. Christianity and witchcraft are diametrically opposed.
    2. This person used the eucharist improperly. You either eat it, or bury it when it has fallen to the ground.
    3. Just because someone writes something in a book does not mean it was actually practiced or sanctioned by the church. Just because it's in said book does not mean it's right. If this was done, used for protection or not, it is still a sinful act. Heresy even.

As someone who recently converted to Orthodoxy from Wicca there are similarities between traditional witchcraft and various blessings such as a House Blessing to protect you from evil forces. But invoking the power of Christ for anything other then worship, defense, or His Mercy is incorrect. As stated in this video these documents come from recently converted groups of pagans so their mysticism is in a transitional phase somewhere between their native witchcraft and Christianity.

I just love seeing Christians going full rage mode seeing something that was even practiced until the 20th century.
The south of Italy was a hot center for Christian magic, that was practised until the mid 20th century (for more infortimation I suggest to look at Ernesto de Martino's works on magic in southern Italy).
These magical pratices event thought they aren't as practiced anymore they still have a small Influence on the belief and religious tradition of these people .
The Catholic Church doesn't obviously accept them as part of its religious doctrine, but priest and high religious figures still approve this tradition and don't take arms against it.

I mean, there's a lot of witchcraft without it as well. Prayer and worship of a deity (even if I find this deity problematic), sprinkling holy water (isn't it literally imbued with a deity's essence?), casting out evil spirits in the name of said deity, prophesying, speaking in tongues, doing rituals like Mass, oath laying etc.

While the term witchcraft can be a little complicated due to it changing meaning over time, Christian folk magic (though that in and of itself is often a term applied from the outside, and folk magic practitioners might prefer to not call it that especially in the past) and Christian Occultism is so much a thing.
Like... it's undeniably a thing. And when people say Christian Witchcraft, that's generally what they're talking about, is coming from that modern definition of the term.
To that end, I have an example from the Long Lost Friend which was first printed in the 19th century by John Hohmann. As all can see, it's very Christian. The whole book is like that.
If anybody is wondering what specific tradition this is coming from, that'd be Pennsylvania Dutch Braucherei. (originally anyways, English versions of the book spread beyond the Pa Dutch in the 19th/20th century, so other traditions may also use it)
Often called Powwowing in English, but I prefer not to use that term for likely obvious reasons.
    + + +
(+ equals one crossing of the self, typically while reciting God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (though in German))
    English version:
How to cause male or female thieves to stand still, without being able to move backward or forward.
In using any prescriptions of this book in regard to making others stand still, it is best to be walking about; and repeat the following three times:
Oh Peter, oh Peter! Borrow the power from God: what I shall bind with the bands of a Christian hand, shall be bound; all male and female thieves, be they great or small, young or old, shall be spell-bound by the power of God, and not be able to walk forward or backward, until I see them with my eyes and give them leave with my tongue except it be that they count for me all the stones that may be between heaven and earth, all rain-drops, all the leaves and all the grass in the world. This I pray for the repentance of my enemies.
    + + +
Repeat your articles of faith and the Lord's Prayer.
If the thieves are to remain alive, the sun dare not shine upon them before their release. There are two ways of releasing them, which will be particularly stated: The first is this, that you tell him in the name of St. John to leave: the other is as follows: "the words which have bound thee, shall give thee free"
    + + +
    Notes:
St. Peter pops up in many thief bindings, or Diebsege, due to Mathew 16:19
"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
The opening "Oh Peter, oh Peter! Borrow the power from God: what I shall bind with the bands of a Christian hand, shall be bound" is the same as another thief binding found by one Otto Heilig in a recipe book found in Handschuhsheim near Heidelberg, written in 1818, two years before Hohmann's book first appeared.
By articles of faith, the Apostle's Creed is meant
It's a bit of an oddity of this specific charm that St. John is invoked rather than St. Peter once more. St. Peter often binds and unbinds the target of a charm, but not in this instance.
This sentence "Wenn's nur einer ist, oder ein Weibsbild, sagt man du" is a specification to use 'du' (thou) when only one thief is being targeted, not found in the English translation.
This is come from the recent edition of the Long Lost Friend edited by Daniel Harms. Highly recommend it.
