At my age now, in my 60's, having served in the US Army and National Guard for 20 years and the Gulf War, 1990-91', this show has a lot more impact on me now as a man than it did as a boy, because you see things from so many different perspectives....This show is one of the greatest quality shows I think I have ever seen...Every single episode was thought out and it leaves you thinking, leaves you with some sort of lesson to bring with you...Some of these episodes, like this one, will stay with me for days after.....They sometimes really get to me....

Outstanding acting and plots aside, each show seemed to touch on the human element of war and conflict. This is something I missed as a kid growing up and watching every week. But now, as an adult, I can enjoy the deeper morals this show never failed to roll into the raw drama. A priceless gem that can be enjoyed by any generation!

Vic Morrow, more than any other actor I've ever watched, knew when to hold back. He was dramatic even when he said nothing. Perhaps he obtained that excellence in brooding in his work as a stage.actor, particularly in Shakespeare in the early 1950s.

A friend of mine's Father was captured at the Battle of the Bulge. As a young infantryman, deep in German territory, he said the thought of escaping was not realistic and never really crossed his mind. Once you're captured the war is over for you. The only reason to even attempt an escape is if the conditions of your captivity are horrible and even then it's pretty much suicide to try an escape. No dishonor in being captured if you had no choice.

My father in law was a medic at Bastogne. I hate to bring this into these comments but trump once said he didn’t like people who were captured in war. He was making a dig at John McCain who had lost to Obama in 2008. Tramp also said that the soldiers and marines who went to Vietnam were suckers for that and he never liked being around wounded veterans. John Kelly his chief of staff was ordered to never bring wounded or disabled veterans around him or the White House. And yet so many of these guys worship him. UNBELIEVABLE …

+David Davidson No question about that Dave. At this point I am wondering how the writers keep coming up with good material. Yes, beginning to see a lot of repetition in the story lines but they always add something that makes the episode special. This episode reminds me of the incident when a Luftwaffe pilot was scrambled to intercept a B-17 that was badly damage, only to escort it back to England. The pilot of the B-17 and the German pilot became friends after the war. Too bad "Saunders" did not have the same opportunity. During Combat!s initial presentation lived outside the country for two years and now realize how many episodes I missed among the repeats. I wish my Dad was still alive, we would have spent hours watching this together on UA-cam.

The miseries of war! Decent men fighting on both sides with compassion in the their hearts and hatred for killing.Even in the midst of blood thirsty combat there is comradery. The german sergeant was a christian and a good samaritan and he was a soldier who felt a sense of duty to fight on though the battle was lost and though for a brutal dictatorship. He died for duty when he could have lived. Sarge had to shoot him out of duty though he wanted to save his life. Thus men came out of this hellish scenario scarred emotionally unless they can move forward in their faith in God and his creation.

He said that he had medical stuff that he took pills for where I didn’t have heart or kidney or cancer or anything else for me to take pills. I said that’s right !!! It’s to prevent me from getting those illnesses. Then I got really into his face and said “ your daughter was a widow when I married her. Well I’m taking pills so I don’t DIE ON HER !!! “. I went to bed really pissed at him. But the next morning he apologized and said that he understood better. Then we each had a beer for breakfast. It would be interesting to find out how many times Saunders was captured, wounded, or what his kill count was.
I don't know if the story background about Saunders was that he was in North Africa or Italy prior to D-Day.
I know in the starting of the series he was in England and crossed the channel to Normandy on June 6, 1944.

Thats the difference between the lower ranks (usually young) and higher ranks like sargents and officers (usually older). Older military personel knew that if they excaped, it took 10 people (or more) off the front line to look for them, thus saving lives. One life might be lost trying to escape, yet save 10 on the line, potentially causing the enemy to lose ground and hopefully lose the war that much faster.

    But, from his perspective...Back then..
    Running a small dairy operation.
    Still fresh, from WWII...
    He was Army... Sgt...
On Iwo Jima, for the B-52s....
To the end of the war....
Which tends to mean Air Corps.
And, he probably went in.... '42...?...
To be a "Supply Chief"... Sgt...!...???
And, some Japanese were still there, too!...

I’ve remembered this episode a lot during my life. Since it’s season 3 I’ve been remembering it for 57 years now. And then the other Sargent trying to explain how it was a reaction when he caught the rifle. My uncle Joe explained that part to me. Just reminiscing …

Nothing like a good artillery barrage to start a COMBAT! episode.
The 25th Division that Ernst Keller is supposed to belong to was not part of the Afrika Korps. It was on the Eastern front during that period and was later almost destroyed in the Soviet Bagration offensive. It was reorganized and sent to the Western front where it fought against the 506th PIR during the Market Garden offensive (portrayed in Band of Brothers). It was later involved in Operation Nordwind, the last German offensive action in the West in late December, 1944-early January, 1945. This is the only action it was involved in that fits the episode except that it was fought during a brutal winter. Possibly Keller could have been transferred into the 25th.
It is curious that the unit that picked Keller/Saunders up would have taken him--an invalid as they thought--into the front lines with them. That may have been the thought the sergeant had when his CO ordered him to bring Saunders/Keller along. Loved the sensitivity Saunders shows him at the end.

I remember the scene with the hefty German sergeant getting shot from when I was 5 or 6. I thought he was an American sergeant being shot by one of his own men. I guess I was partly right. As I recall, it was daylight when I saw it, not the usual Tuesday at 7:oo p.m. In any case, I've come to the first episode that I remember, albeit imperfectly, as a child. I used to watch Combat every Tuesday night wearing my monkey helmet, my plastic canteen, my cap grenade, and my green plastic rifle.
I'm hoping to catch other scenes that I remember, from here on. The other mystery scene was a G.I. calling out to a guy named Frank, who responds with something like,"Ba ba" and then gets hit with an explosion. The other G.I. then takes him to the aid station. They tell him that the guy is dead but he doesn't believe it. I've watched several old war movies hoping to find that scene but so far no luck. Maybe it's on one of the upcoming Combat episodes. I love jogging my memory.
