Well...definitely not "horrible." But disappointing, yes...particularly in the failure to contain the outside run. I had flashbacks of the RichRod/Hoke era during times on Saturday, and that ain't a good thing. But hey, NOW Harbaugh has some film to use for improvements, which is a good thing, because there was really nothing at all negative to say after Week 1's game.
Anytime you win 51-14, you didn't play horrible. So let's keep this in the realm of reality. They are some concerns, that will be exposed when they face the good teams.
Mark G. Well...the idea here is that those weaknesses will be highlighted in film study by the players and coaches, so that they will NOT be "exposed" down the road. Sure, not everything is "correctable," but a lot certainly is, and with the coaching staff that Michigan is fortunate enough to have, I feel pretty confident that we'll work out some of these problems. Keep in mind, too, that our defensive schemes have been pretty damn vanilla thus far. Has Don Brown called a single zone blitz yet? I don't think so. You can bet the ranch that Michigan will be dialing up more exotic coverage packages going forward, now that Colorado, Penn State, and Wisconsin are the next three opponents on the schedule.
MrDunedon What are you talking about, they blitz almost every play. Peppers is in backfield all the time. That's one reason why they gave up those big QB runs. They will blitz some and leave man coverage, and get burned when the QB breaks the pocket.
Mark G. I'm talking about zone blitz. If they've done that, I've missed it. Peppers, sure...well, pretty much plays a hybrid LB/S role, anyway, right? But I haven't seen too many other LBs drop into coverage and us come on a corner or safety blitz...at least not yet. I think we're bound to see more of that. Anyway, like I said, it's actually GOOD to get some of our blunders on film as teaching tools. Correct what you can correct BEFORE the next game.
Offensive line needs to develop more chemistry, make those guys battle, real football minds know the O-Line is the whole foundation of the offense, we have the athletes in the backfield and downfield to score, the big guys need to grind hard for this team to succeed on the big stage, I think they can do it!
so true i was so unimpressed with their performance today. i expect the them to block better especially in bigger games like psu msu iowa wisconsin and osu
OLine didn't play too bad all things considered. UCF sold out on the run and had 8 or 9 guys in the box almost every down. They were pretty relentless on the run blitz
We're seeing progression from Wilton, Rashan seems like he's the real deal, Jabrill is Jabrill, backfield and offensive line need work, our special teams was on point today, guys need to play with just a little bit more discipline, stay humble, and work hard.
+Jasen Rendon maybe at slot. Mcdoom is really showing something. But the RBs have to give the young QB a break. He's not ready just yet to sling it 40+ times.
This game shows how badly Michigan needs Taco Charlton and Bryan Mone to defend against the run. Then again, they still managed to hold off UCF to only two touchdowns despite the 275 some rushing yards commited by them!
McCray got held badly on the 87-yard TD (notice how he couldn't run away from his defender), but ThoseWhoStay is correct that the UCF offense managed to screw with our linebackers today. The team as a whole seemed a bit off, which is fine early in the season.
They only had one good run on a play that was actually a designed run, and there was at least 2 obvious holds on that play. The rest of their yards came from QB scrambles. Michigan played a ton of man to man coverage in this game and the DL didn't stay disciplined in their rush lanes. When they don't stay disciplined in their rush lanes and the DB's have their backs turned to the QB, it allows huge chunk plays on QB scrambles. My honest opinion is that Harbaugh and Don Brown haven't wanted to show many of their zone coverages yet that would have helped curb some of those long QB scrambles. They've played 2 vastly inferior opponents and have much tougher teams ahead. They've played very vanilla on both sides of the ball knowing that their superior personnel would win comfortably both weeks. We'll see what they have up their sleeves when they play PSU and Wisconsin.
Don't worry FSU is #2 and we have absolutely the worst O-line in recent memory. Our Qb gets zero protection and we can't open any lanes in the run game period. Plus Bama looked very "un-Bama-like" Saturday and Clemson looks the most shaky of any top 5 team. No top team looks great at the moment.
I'll give the QB, Spec Teams, and DB's A's. Run game was spotty and the read option coverage was dreadful. Colorado brings a similar offense into Ann Arbor and there will be improvements. Nice to see an objective viewpoint in the comments.
It has been a long time since Michigan has had a QB who can throw accurately beyond thirty yards from the scrimmage. Here's hoping that Speight can achieve that on a semi-regular basis. Blown home-run balls (sorry Rudock) cost the team big time last season.
"Michigan making it look easy" I love it!!!! I hope they fix the defensive miscues before the buffs come to town. They are no cupcake. GOOOOOOOO MICHIGAN, BEAT the buffs!!!
I love how the UCF coach made a complete donkey out of himself in the post game press conference talking about a moral victory and how they ran 300 yards and out hit michigan. I think the guy needs to get a clue @ 21-0 in the first quarter UCF was up against 2nd string and @35 nothing 3rd string what did michigan play 70-80 players in this game? How many times did UCF take a sack? get a kick blocked? fumble and or turn over the ball? where is this so called moral victory? they played sloppy and got destroyed by 2nd and 3rd string subs?
UCF did hit some big plays against the starters on defense. UCF didn't win a game last year, the coach is trying to rebuild a program. When you lose big and the team is feeling down, you want to try and build them up, for the next game!
UCF was 0-12 last year and they don't have nearly as much talent as Michigan. Scott Frost's offense ran for 300 on Michigan with a bunch of 2-3 star guys. That was a moral victory. If UCF was a ranked team with a bunch of talent and performed this way then I would agree with you. They're on par with Rutgers from a talent perspective and they at least moved the ball and scored some points unlike Rutgers who got blanked 78-0.
supaman321123 Just happened to comment on this particular video, I have watched the full game 3 times and still do not see a play where UCF "out-hit" UofM
You are football illiterate sir. Michigan's defense has been absolutely dominant early in their games before the games got out of hand. Hawaii didn't even gain a 1st down until about 5 minutes left in the first half. By that time it was already over, Michigan was up 4-5 TD's. Yesterday UCF only had about 26 yards of offense until the middle of the 2nd quarter after Michigan went up 31-0. It's pretty easy for people who have played and coached the game ( like I have ) to see when a team let's their foot off the gas pedal, both from a schematic stand point from the coaches as well as the energy level from the players. Now, do they have some obvious things to work on after yesterday? Absolutely! Mainly staying disciplined in their rush lanes ( this issue was mainly brought up by first time players like Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich ) and taking better pursuit angles from the deep safeties. The OL will have to gel a little bit, Braden seemed to really struggle coming back from injury. I'd look for a short leash for Braden going forward and Ben Bredeson to get a bunch of snaps. That youngster has a GREAT future ahead of him on the OL. Anyway, maybe you should learn a little more about the game before making idiotic comments. Then you might be able to actually understand what you're watching instead of just regurgitating a snippet from some talking head on ESPN.
These highlights make it seem like we dominated, but in reality, we played horrible.

This Michigan team is the scariest team in the nation. Playmakers at every position.
Maybe you should wait til they play a good team, before you make that statement.
that's what im saying. this offense wouldn't score anything against a real defense
Special teams was on point today!! A+ for them.
I'd give them an A- just because Allen *did* drop a snap.
The one thing I noticed from these highlights, is despite the score, UCF out hit Michigan.
Coach Frost, is that you?
Offensive line needs to develop more chemistry, make those guys battle, real football minds know the O-Line is the whole foundation of the offense, we have the athletes in the backfield and downfield to score, the big guys need to grind hard for this team to succeed on the big stage, I think they can do it!

maizeman90 true
I only came to this video cuz I heard deestroying played in this game

Right! The RBs have to do a little bit more. This is still a young QB.
+Captain Marvel I agree, but it wasn't the RB's fault 90% of the time, the defense was blitz inane our o-line couldn't handle the pressure.
+Captain Marvel I have a feeling come big ten time that Jabrill will be lining up at RB quite a bit if they don't pick it up.
+Jasen Rendon maybe at slot. Mcdoom is really showing something. But the RBs have to give the young QB a break. He's not ready just yet to sling it 40+ times.
Yeah...the vision of Smith and Isaac still isn't very good, to say the least. They seem to consistently miss their blocks and cutback lanes.
This game shows how badly Michigan needs Taco Charlton and Bryan Mone to defend against the run.

The middle of our defense looks pretty good. We struggled with contain today. That's a lot to do with the linebackers.

We may be ranked #5 now, but we still can't run, can't stop the read option. Not a good game yesterday. Lot of improvements should be on the way

Rudock had some nice balls toward the end of the season last year.
Rudock did well imo, also Speight will be here for two years so thats good too
+InTensity FlaMe Speight is a redshirt sophomore, he can stay for 3 years if he wants to.
Buckeye4life 440 ha lmao look at this sad child, born into being a buckeye fan... Tragic
You def make the BEST highlight videos, sub'd!!
"Michigan making it look easy" I love it!!!! I hope they fix the defensive miscues before the buffs come to town. They are no cupcake. GOOOOOOOO MICHIGAN, BEAT the buffs!!!
I agree, finally we will see a decent team. So this will be a better test, to see how good this team really is.
all we need to see now is special teams score on kick offs & punts, man they were hitting on all cylinders
We will get a better idea, of how good this team really is Saturday. Colorado is a decent team, and they will play looking to prove something.
I love how the UCF coach made a complete donkey out of himself in the post game press conference talking about a moral victory and how they ran 300 yards and out hit michigan. Well the next year they went undefeated
If speight plays like this against Wisconsin and penn state these upcoming weeks then I can only guarantee there would be a championship
I am still looking for even one play that Frost will show his team where they out hit Michigan, lol
you do know these are Michigan highlights only right?
supaman321123 Just happened to comment on this particular video, I have watched the full game 3 times and still do not see a play where UCF "out-hit" UofM
