What is the best platform in terms of user friendliness and live customer support? Fidelity, E-Trade or other? Im potentially rolling over an old 401K.
Very clear explanation for a first time muni-bond buyer on Fidelity. Thank you, this helps a great deal. Fidelity should post your video as a tutorial on their New Issues page.
We use Charles Schwab and I would love to see a similar tutorial for Charles Schwab. Thank you! Found your channel recently through the youtube algorithm
Im so glad i didnt really make any big mistakes when i started my investment journey last year. So far I’ve just been sticking small amounts of money (think 1-5 bucks) into companies im sure will continue to exist for the next 5 years and if the stocks do well, i hold on. If not, i reinvest the bad ones into the good ones so i can get higher gains. It’s not fool proof, but i did gain about $40 from putting in $20 into NVIDIA earlier this year so that was pretty nice.
Fidelity there is 15 year FEDERAL HOME LOAN BANKS BOND @7% , maturity date 10/26/2038. SFP protection, not continuously callable. Sounds like a great deal, what you think?
So helpful, just like all your videos. We really appreciate your taking the time to put these together for us! Relative newbie w/bonds here and am curious, if rates drop significantly in say 3 years, would you expect to sell this muni bond at premium? any insight on how to evaluate what the potential premium might be?
PLEASE --Can you explain what "coupon" means when looking up Treasury bills, notes, bonds on Fidelity. It doesn't match up with yield so it's confusing. I always pick "Zero" because i understand that one. Please do a video that explains Fidelity coupon/frequency vs Yield. Thank you So much!!!
Coupon is the predetermined interest rate you get every month guaranteed. The yield changes based on your purchase price of your bond. If you purchase the bond at a discount you get a higher yield than coupon rate. If you purchase the bond at a premium you get less "yield" than the coupon rate.
Jen, I have a question, hope you can answer! I see a few munis that have SFP, a lower rating (BAA1), BUT are Insured. Would you buy such a muni? Is Muni “Insurance” same as FDIC where I need not worry about safety of my principal?
It would be helpful if the date the video was made was included somewhere on the video or the comment page. Not sure if one can really get above 6% in May of 2024.
I made a terrible mistake and sold all my 401K into cash when I lost about 15% of the portfolio last year, worrying the market would drop even more. Do you suggest I should buy all at once to go back to the market? What should I do now? Thank you!
What is the best platform in terms of user friendliness and live customer support? Fidelity, E-Trade or other? Im potentially rolling over an old 401K.
Your videos are awesome. However, when I go to the Fidelity site and look at municipal bonds, my screen is different from yours. For example, I don’t have a “tax equivalent yield” column. What is “no bid” vs the “ask” bid? Can you explain how to look at the “spread to treasuries” figure under the “price and performance” tab?
If you follow the steps in the video, you'll get to the same screens. The ask price is the price you pay to buy the bond & the bid price is the price you get when you sell the bond.
I was told never to purchased munis above par or 100 because it eats up principal investment. Please explain how you will offset purchasing at a premium.
Thank you. I have been looking at Agency bonds for Federal Home Loan Banks which your previous video stated is exempt from State income tax. I have been looking at one with a 6.27% yield with first call date about 6 months out. I feel this is a win as it is higher than a 6 month T bill, so if it is called, I'll still be earning more than if I purchased a 6 month T bill. Is my calculation correct or am I missing something?
You're not considering the risk of the bond not getting called. If I am correct, the bond you are looking at matures on 10/10/2030, seven years from now. Are you prepared to hold to maturity if rates keep going up? If rates shoot up to 8 or 10%, which is not unheard of, you will be stuck at 6.27%, and if you sell then, it would be at a loss.
Hi Jen I don't know where else to put this question so here goes. If I purchase a T-bill from Schwab, especially a 4 to 17 week T-bill, there is usually a one week gap between when the t-bill matures and the settlement date of the next t-bill purchase I can perform of the same maturity... roll-over by hand. This can significantly reduce the annual interest rate on a several month t-bill. Are there any strategies or auto-rollover setups that allow a rollover into the same maturity t-bill without a 1-week gap between maturity and the next settlement date for the same duration t-bill. Thanks and I think your channel is awesome!!
@@GunterandthePenguins I don’t have personal experience with munis, but with most callable bonds the terms of the sale are something like “callable on x date with 5 days notice”. So yes you would ordinarily expect to get notice.

Have we moved on from T-bills and agency?
Schwab please👍
Schwab yes!
Is putting emergency funds in a muni money market fund better than a high yield savings?
Keep in mind that if you don’t hold to maturity (or until called), you would have to sell on secondary market to get the funds.
Muni money market funds are liquid. You can deposit and withdraw anytime. @@Ann-yk3sl
