I give credit to the owners for realizing they were out of their depths now before anything permanent happened to the monitor. A clogged nose from bad substrate and long nails is relatively easy to come back from.
It speaks volumes that the first thing she did was soak her entire head. She seems really sweet, and really relieved. Glad she found her way to you. 😊❤️
She looks so scared, she just doesn't realize yet how lucky she is to have landed in your care. Give her a little time and she'll be just as happy as they all are to see you.
i cant imagine not doing your homework before bringing home an animal, my savannah hasnt even been hatched yet (captive bred) and im already done with the enclosure and I keep looking at information about them. Good for the family that they found her a new home before alot of issues started to pop up and hopefully they look up how to care for the iguana!
Monitors are just so smart. The fact that she is actually right away putting her face under water and washing that sand of her nose is kinda amazing. That is not something many reptiles do. Such a wonderful little monitor that deserves only the best 💖
I just rescued my first beardie last night. Rescue may too strong of a word because he was fairly well treated and dearly loved. The owners realized that he wasn't being given enough attention and they did not do very much study, relying on that the national chain store told them. He seems in pretty good shape, albeit a little underweight and had a diet consisting entirely of crickets and romaine lettuce. He had a red bulb for heat and I don't think enough UVB (I still need a meter). He doesn't seem to be showing any sign of MBD, so we'll just start to improve his situation. Thank you for all that I've learned on your channel, it gave me the chance to know what I was getting into. They gave me all of his equipment and supplies so today I go shopping for what's missing.
In lieu of spending the money on a quality UV measurement device any exotic veterinary will be able to test lighting. They normally do it anytime free of charge for patrons but may charge a small fee for non-patrons - I’m not positive about the non-patron fee. I guess it would depend on the clinic.
Its the same with cat’s litter. Dust is a huge problem for their lungs yet a majority of litter found at big stores are not dust free. I dont find it surprising that reptiles have the same problem. Thank you for making this more aware for people.
What a sweetheart. They always come in so unsure, then once they know they are safe and being cared for, let their personalities show. She'll get there. She's a little thing. Glad you've got her. She couldn't have gotten luckier. :) Thank you so much for loving and caring for these animals! You are so awesome !!!
New rescue! She's a cutie too! I'm glad this isn't one of your Emergency Rescues, she looks well cared for even if the owners weren't 100% sure of things. Not only can you see the pink in her nostrils, but she's got a bit of that dirt around her mouth too... She's definitely been eating a bit of it. Hopefully that nice warm bath will help clean everything out and it won't become an issue!
Oh my goodness. She/he is absolutely beautiful. I’m so glad you got her/him. As I’ve said before, I love watching your videos. You teach so well. I don’t even have any reptiles and I would probably know how to take care of them. And if I had a question I’d watch your videos. You just start from the ground up and that’s what a lot of people need. Please give her/him a cuddle for me. In my mind I’ve already named her/him Kai. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
This is why I am so happy that my country requires a license to keep reptiles and exotics. All cage, lighting and feed requirements are covered by law with minimums and you cant even buy the animal until you have your license code in-hand (and must log the breeders codes for your records). It immediately weeds out impulse purchases from the general public and keeps these precious babies safe.
I really wish that there was a way to regulate how pet stores sold their animals. Its so sad that so many of these animals are sold to people who are not fully educated on what they're getting. The animal suffers in the long run. Props to this girls owners for recognizing that they couldn't give her what she needs and getting her the help she deserves. Looking forward to seeing her thrive in your care and hopefully find a loving, caring home.
It's finally nice to see you get an animal that you can really work with turn its situation around very quickly and get it a very good home but then again Simba and her you never know once again thank you very much
Awwww watching her get all squirmy in the bath made my heart soar! You know that's a happy baby having a nice warm bath and it must feel so good for her after the dry dry dry sand!
I know how much you still get all the feels about Simba at this age, so I know this is just tearing your heart apart. I know they tried, they got bad information, and it sucks! But they did the right thing. She's a sweetie and she's with you now! You're going to make all the difference in her life and heres a rescue monitor who's gonna grow up to play ball and tug of war, and go on walks with her big brother someday(maybe, maybe not, I can dream) lol. I'm sorry that she came to you under these circumstance, but at least she's come in this condition and not something worse... or after years on the sand with all that fine silica in her lungs...I shudder to think about that. She's going to be ok now!!! And Simba has a baby sister! Do what you do best! And thank you so much for doing it!!! Take care of you, try to not let this one get you in the feels, too much. ❤
Got a great feeling about this one. As you tell it, just some kind folks who realized they got in over their heads, did the best they could in the meantime, sought a proper caring outlet before any major harm could happen... Good people, lucky lizard.
I really love watching your videos. I could never have a reptile myself because I really wouldn't know how to look after one properly and I realise that but I really like seeing them and seeing how you keep them and look after them. I learn so much about them. Thank you.
I think life is best for all pets when owners have the heart of a scientist and are hungry for information before and during getting the animal. I wish people had to prove their knowledge first.

Hope you can find the time to answer my question, but I understand, if you cant.😉
Hey Animal1 Guy! I took in an adult Savananh monitor. She is sweet but super scared of everything and everyone 😔. I can not get her to eat insects. Not live one's, not canned ones, dried ones. She is definitely ove weight as they only fed her rats for the past two years and she was in a very small 20L tank. She is 18 inches long. Any advice to get her diet right? Help her feel less scared? I'd love her to know she is safe and be able to take her outside in an outdoor enclosure we built for her. But she has to trust me to pick her and take her out and bring her back in. Any advice for me?

Thanks a ton keep up the good work man👍
Tank size, 50 gallon plus front open! 4x2x2, it doesnt need to be bigger than that. Pet stores also get them from breeders, but if you go to a reptile show, you normally can get special color morphs, they are more money but get pretty cool colors! They should live to at least 15 years old, sometimes over 20!
The saddest part is that the owners were trying to take good care of her, but because of bad information from what should have a been a reliable source they were hurting her.
That’s so sad I do rescues as well and that’s honestly so appalling that animals get treated like that I have 4 Savannah monitors and could never let my babies get to that point. That thing (not human) that owned that poor baby and let it get to that point needs knowledge dropped on them hard and probably should be treated like they treated that baby. But honestly if you are looking for a new home for him at anytime please lmk I’m very interested in giving him or her the best life possible
The owners did turn her over before she became unfixable, it's really the blame of the pet traders/sellers, they don't ask questions they just want the sale. You wouldn't sell a 18+ game to a kid, you shouldn't sell an exotic pet to a unprepared adult.
She seems super sweet. So glad she came to your care. I can’t wait until she finishes her shed and gets her nasal obstructions so you can bond and she can learn tug-o-war with you 😊
I will never buy from a pet store again, I was young, ignorant, went in and picked up 3 whites tree frogs, they told me nothing about their husbandry, I had no idea they needed heat, lights, uv, humidity, I’m still surprised they made it. It makes me so angry that they didn’t share knowledge, or improper knowledge. We were just at Petsmart picking up supplies for my new baby beardie we got from my breeder, and our teenager says he’s gonna buy a hamster, out of the blue. I talked him out of a rash decision, told him doesn’t matter what animal you do your research, he thought he knew everything already, easy peasy, I said make sure you’re in it for LIFE, and what about monthly cost, can you afford it, what about road trips your planning after school, who will take care of it, what to expect , husbandry, etc. Don’t buy pets on a whim!!!
I’m worried about that iguana. I highly doubt these people can properly care for one, if they’re unable to care for a savanna monitor. I seriously hope they’ve since done their research but I don’t have high hopes. I’m glad they surrendered her to you but I wish the iguana would’ve come along too.
Just curious, but do you ever call these pet stores to educate them when you hear they're giving wrong/harmful instruction? I imagine it might not be taken as constructively as intended, or or receive perceived as insult, but I was just wondering.
I was wondering the exact same thing. To bad that they dont listen. Is there anyway you could make a small flyer asking the store owner to hand them out with each reptile purchase. Offering to give free advise on care and questions? Include your rescue, website you tube channel, ect. In return if they agreed to it you could offer to put there store in your list below in some of your videos? It would be a benefit to healthier reptile and maybe boost some donations as well.
I give credit to the owners for realizing they were out of their depths now before anything permanent happened to the monitor. A clogged nose from bad substrate and long nails is relatively easy to come back from.

I have spoken to some while in them, lost cause
I was wondering the exact same thing. To bad that they dont listen. Is there anyway you could make a small flyer asking the store owner to hand them out with each reptile purchase. Offering to give free advise on care and questions? Include your rescue, website you tube channel, ect. In return if they agreed to it you could offer to put there store in your list below in some of your videos? It would be a benefit to healthier reptile and maybe boost some donations as well.
