Fun fact: The scene where one of the Dozen impersonates a general was originally supposed to be Clint Walker's character (Posey). But when Walker didn't want to do it, the director randomly selected Donald Sutherland (Pinkley), whose role was only supposed to be small and have one line. This funny scene was what led to Sutherland's breakthrough and being cast in the war satire M*A*S*H, followed by Kelly's Heroes and the rest is history.
Wow, I mentioned that detail myself separately. First heard Sutherland tell the story himself long, long ago to Tom Snyder on the late-night Tomorrow show. Along with another story of how he was offered a percentage of the profits in lieu of his regular salary for making a brief appearance as a trouserless professor in National Lampoon's Animal House, but because he didn't think it would make any money he isisted on his regular salary, and thus screwed himself out of millions of dollars.
Donald Sutherland (best known currently as President Snow or as the father of Kiefer Sutherland), was prolific in his prime. Some of my favorites of his are Eye of the Needle, The Great Train Robbery, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and The Eagle Has Landed. He also pops up in the Kate Bush video, Cloudbursting. Sutherland is always fun to watch.
Donald Sutherland has done so many amazing roles as mentioned, as well as I think one in "Outbreak". I really hope that she sees both "Kelly's Heroes" as well as "M*A*S*H" as they are so amazing as well and they are both war-"comedies". Donald was also in "Animal House" and another warmovie of "The Eagle Has Landed", well worth a good watch and a good set of cast!
I was in the 80's, but back then they didnt have a sustained sniper program. During Vietnam they "reinvented the wheel" again, but after the war the Marines were the only service to set up a permanent dedicated MOS and training system at Quantico. I'm not sure what exactly "Scout Sniper" meant back then, but I think it was more what we could consider a designated marksman today.

Lee Marvin was a Marine during WW2. Got shot during the battle of Iwo Jima. True badass. See him in Cat Ballou (1965, western/musical) and The Professionals (1966). The Professionals is a western, and he plays with another true badass in Jack Palance. Before WW2, Palance was a professional boxer. As for Charles Bronson, you might watch him in Chato's Land, or definitely in the Death Wish series!!!! Another great review...
Jack Palance was often the bad guy in the movies he was in because of his rugged looks. They were the result of reconstructive surgery after his face got burned while exiting a burning B-24 bomber while in the Army Air Corps in WWII. It gave him a distinctive unmistakable look that worked especially well in the westerns he was in.
Just to make a couple corrections, Lee Marvin was shot on Saipan and never made it to Iwo Jima. The Iwo Jima part got started because Iwo Jima was part of the lie that went around the internet about the medic that treated Lee Marvin being Captain Kangaroo, Bob Keshan. Also, if you're speaking about the MP Guard Sergeant, that was Richard Jaeckel not Audie Murphy.

The amount of star power in this movie is massive. The list of notable actors is a long one. Some were stars already and some were future superstars. As a military vet myself, I love Bronson's line at the end of the movie. Another great WW2 movie is Kelly's Heroes. Lots of star power and hilarious.

My Dad took just himself and me out in San Fransisco and got to watch it in the theater right after it was released. I also took me to see "Bullitt" in the same theater with Steve McQueen . He, my Dad is 3rd gen San Fransiscan ( I'm 4rth gen) and with him growing up there He kept saying "you can't get there" from where ever as the Cars in the movie would turn one corner and show a different street next. We loved him for it.
Same here. My late father showed this to me when I was about ten years old. He loved this movie. Same goes for Kelly’s Heroes and The Great Escape. I grew up watching those. Good times. RIP Dad.
Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Telly Savales, what a cast for this movie. If you want another western, Once Upon a Time in the West is a masterpiece, starring Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda and Jason Robards. Just an amazing movie.
Telly Savalas did do The Dirty Dozen, the deadly mission1987 and the fatal mission 1988, where he basically repeated his role from 1970 Kellys Heroes. Ernest Borgnine, General Worden, was only actor that was in all Dirty Dozen movies Also starred with Lee Marvin in 1973, Emperor of the North Pole and 1985 The Dirty Dozen Next Mission, they appeared both in 1955 Violent Saturday and Bad Day at Black Rock, 1953 3D movie The Stranger Wore a Gun. Ernest Borgnine is one of those who co starred with lot of top name actors during his 60 year career from Randolph Scott in 1950s to Bruce Willis in 2010.
One of Lee Marvin's best performances in my opinion is the film "Hell in the Pacific" which also starred a very famous Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune who was in The Seven Samurai. That's well worth a watch.

(11:29) That's Clint Walker, a man who's 6 6 and had a waistline of 32 inches. Freak of nature. Interesting story. At 26, Clint secured an audition with Cecil B DeMille for The Ten Commandments. On the way there, Clint saw a woman standing on the roadside next to a car with a flat tire. Clint was running late, but he couldn't bear leaving her unassisted, so he helped her with her flat. The woman offered to pay him, but Clint declined. Clint told her he had to hurry because he missed his interview with Mr. DeMille. Clint arrived at the studio and was told to wait. Hours later, Cecil B DeMille entered the room, angry, and demanded an explanation. Halfway through, Cecil interrupted Clint with a laugh, and said, "Young man, you can stop right there, because I know exactly what happened, but what you don't know is, the woman your helped is my secretary." Clint got the part, and more work thereafter....
Another great World War II movie starring Lee Marvin is the big red one. It came out in 1980 and it costars Mark Hamill. It’s a great movie to track down.
Big Red One is damn awesome. I run lots of RPG's of various genres, and Lee Marvin's character from Big Red One has been the inspiration of so many military NPC's from my games. Love that movie and may be my fave WWII movie. The intro from WWI was damn good too. Too few reactors ever give the Big Red One a chance.
Dawn, Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson were pretty good friends off screen, a really good but little known movie starring the both of them is "Death Hunt" from 1981, sure you will enjoy it.
7:12 You probably won't realise who this guy (Jim Brown) is. He's regarded as one of, if not the, greatest American Football players of all time. Sadly passed away in the Summer of 2023. Retired at his peak from playing to pursue an acting career, so when you see him near the end of the movie sprinting across that courtyard, he was only maybe 30 yrs old and still wicked fast. I guess most folks would know him from the comedy Mars Attacks! where he plays the casino employee Byron who has a fist fight with the aliens allowing Tom Jones & Annette Benning to escape in a small plane. The armband colours seemed to confuse you a bit - green was neutral (umpires, observers, etc). The two sides were red against blue. Our heroes sneaked through by "cheating" by keeping changing their armband colours.
The fake General was Donald Sutherland, another amazing actor. He played in dozens of movies, but one of my favourites is a little known WWII/Spy film called The Eye Of The Needle, where he is a German spy who learns of the D-Day invasion plans and is desperately trying to get back to Berlin with the information. He ends up on a remote island in northern Scotland and the tension builds from there. You may know of Donald Sutherland's famous actor son, Kiefer Sutherland. Among many other great roles, he was one of the vampires in The Lost Boys, as well as one of the bad kids in the teenage coming of age movie, Stand By Me.
Yeah The Eye Of The Needle is one of my favorites of his movies, kind of went under the radar as far as being a popular film, it would be great to see her do a reaction, I think she will be the first ever to do so, also would like her to react to, “The Final Countdown” about a USA carrier going back in time. That big guy you're talking about is Clint Walker. He actually fell out of a ski lift and a pole went through his chest. He survived that but died younger than he should have.He was a good actor. Yellowstone Kelley is a good one.
I nearly forgot about George Kennedy. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge under George Patton. He won two Bronze Stars. He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Ernest Borgnine, served in the Navy and won a Best Actor Oscar.
Lee Marvin was a bona fide bad ass. He was a Marine Corps machine gunner shot on an island in the Pacific during World War II. He’s buried in Arlington national cemetery without pomp, or circumstance. He’s buried simply as a Marine. Semper Fidelis.

Telly Savalas (Maggot) is playing an unlikable psycho in this one but also a very great actor. Check him out in Kelly's Heroes playing a sympathetic sergeant along with Clint Eastwood...and Donald Donald Sutherland (the fake general) who steals the movie playing a hippy tank driver. You may know him in his very aged form from the Hunger games. M*A*S*H has him in top form. That castle was a set they constructed and then blew up for real with actual explosives. Jim Brown was in real danger in that scene dropping the explosives down the vents and they needed someone who could run fast. A former NFL football player did the job nicely. And you Dawn are just wonderful, glad you liked this one!

The Major's right hand man was Richard Jaeckal. He was in a lot of stuff. Great character actor. You might enjoy him in Grizzly. It's like Jaws but with a bear.
Lee Marvin has been nominated for, and won, many awards, but he only won one Oscar: Best Actor in a Leading role for the Western comedy _Cat Ballou_ (1966). Co-starring Jane Fonda, in the title role, Marvin plays twin brothers, one good the other bad. _Cat Ballou_ will definitely get a Best Movie Ever! Instead of watching _The Magnificent Seven_ again why not watch the film it was based on: Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, _Seven Samurai._ It's a much longer film, nearly four hours, which allows us not only to get to know the "Seven" better but also delves more fully into the personalities of the villagers and the life of the village.

Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, Clint Walker, Richard Jaeckel are all veterans, having served during or after the Second World War. Marvin and Bronson were wounded in the line of duy. And, in accordance to military regulations, you never salute without wearing a hat.
Saluting without headgear is just fine, there are many circumstances for that. The only time you should don headgear prior to saluting is for reveille and retreat and the national anthem if you're wearing a uniform that has headgear. The only exception I can think of is being on a flightline where headgear that cannot be fastened securely to the head should not be worn at all, but you would render salutes and honors as needed as long as safety is not jeopardized.
Went the day well? One of the best war movies I've ever seen, I often mention it in online comments, as a 'must-see', it's so raw & brutal, especially the fireside despatch by the postmistress!! I think it's a great display of the courage & fortitude of our little Island, in the face of the massive Nazi war machine, & our determination not to be beaten........at any cost!!
@@ole9421 As a kid, I saw this at the theater by myself when it first came out and was thrilled! As well as being a first-rate war film, I think it's one of the first of the modern hardcore action movies. Once it gets started it never stops!
Telly Savales (Maggot) had a degree in psychology and he used it to really portray Maggot. I met him ages ago and he was kind and willing to talk about his films and tv shows.
Clint Walker (Posy) was 6'6 and indeed was a gentle giant. One of the nicest men to ever lives and who always had time for his fans up until his death in his early 90s. He played the title character in the western series "Cheyenne".
Kelly's Heroes is one of my favorite WW2 movies along with this one. Love Donald Sotherland's characters in both of these movies, especially in Kelly's Heroes(Oddball)!! LOL
The balding blonde guy with the glasses at the beginning, then as the observer during the wargames, was George Kennedy, he was Frank's partner in The Naked Gun series. Also Jim Brown is a Hall of Fame running back in the NFL, and lettered in 10 sports I think in college.

Jim Brown passed away 6 months ago. Three of the actors who played the 12 are still with us. Donald Sutherland (#2), Stuart Cooper (#5) and Colin Maitland (#7). Trini Lopez (#10) passed away in 2020 due to complications from COVID. Was very sad.
Dawn Marie - Do you know Kieffer Sutherland? The guy that played the fake General is his father Donald. More recently he has been in Hunger Games. He was also in JFK.

The gentle giant "Posey" hit a man "only once" and drove his jawbone UP into his brain is Clint Walker! He starred in a series in the late 50s and early 60s in a: western show called Cheyenne! He was my childhood hero and the show is actually good. Also when you see his demeanor he wasn't acting, that's really how he was, always a gentleman!! And if you like Lee Marvin you need to see the movie that he won his Oscar in! It's a Western comedy called "Cat Ballou" starring of course Lee Marvin and Jane Fonda. Clint Walker (Posey) starred in a good western movie "Yellowstone Kelly" (1959) with Edd "Cookie" Byrnes ("77 Sunset Strip" TV detective series - teen heart throb). Clint had his own western TV series "Cheyenne" (1955 - 1962). In 1971, he survived a skiing accident in Ca. when he fell puncturing his heart with one of his ski poles.

The right-hand man to Marvin's character, was Richard Jaeckal. As far as I know, he was always a supporting actor. I remember him best in this film and also in the John Wayne western, "Chisum".

I've watched the Dirty Dozen since I was a little tyke in the late 60s. First saw it on it's network TV premier in 1968 or 1969. I've seen it at least a dozen times since, never get tired of it. Another great WW2 adventure movie is Where Eagles Dare with Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton. Charles Bronson must see films : HardTimes and The Mechanic; Lee Marvin must sees : The Professionals and The Killers.

There was a thing fairly popular in this era to plant a singing star in the cast. He would perform a well-known song. It always comes off kind of cheesy. Triuni Lopez was that in this film. He was very famous, particularly for the song he does here. Donald Sutherland was Hawkeye Pierce in the M.A.S.H. movie, which was a pretty faithful rendering of the book, unlike Alan Alda's weepy and pathologically obstructive character in the TV series. Give the film a try. Telly Savalas had a very popular detective series, Kojak with a catch phrase, "Who loves ya, baby."
Lee Marvin was actually a US Marine who took part in 21 landings on Pacific Islands in 1944, before being badly wounded during the 5 week battle for the Island of Saipan. His wounds were so bad, he spent over a year in Military Hospitals before being honourably discharged ...

Another great James Stewart movie is The flight of the Phoenix's it also stars Richard Attenborough. It's about a plane crash and how they fix the plane to get out of the desert.

During the war game, The Dirty Dozen moved through a ‘live-fire range’ where real bullets were used. No one is supposed to go there for safety reasons. Changing arm bands to change sides was not allowed. The Dirty Dozen broke all the rules, like in a real war. Maggot was played by the legendary Telly Savalas. He played Kojak, one of the best TV police crime drama when I was teenager. Jim Brown was a superstar football player. Trini Lopez was a famous singer. The gentle giant Clint Walker played a lot of lead roles in film and TV. The fake general is the great Donald Sutherland. I can almost guarantee you’ll be reacting to one of his movies soon. Lee Marvin was a Marine in the Pacific during WWII, a combat marine who was wounded. He was a genuine war hero and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, where the US's heroes are buried.
Another great WW2 movie from the 60's is "Where Eagles Dare" starring Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton. Beautiful locations, real explosions, great stunts, clever writing, mystery, intrique, lots of action, and strong female operatives.

Fun fact: The scene where one of the Dozen impersonates a general was originally supposed to be Clint Walker's character (Posey). But when Walker didn't want to do it, the director randomly selected Donald Sutherland (Pinkley), whose role was only supposed to be small and have one line. This funny scene was what led to Sutherland's breakthrough and being cast in the war satire M*A*S*H, followed by Kelly's Heroes and the rest is history.
Wow, I mentioned that detail myself separately. First heard Sutherland tell the story himself long, long ago to Tom Snyder on the late-night Tomorrow show. Along with another story of how he was offered a percentage of the profits in lieu of his regular salary for making a brief appearance as a trouserless professor in National Lampoon's Animal House, but because he didn't think it would make any money he isisted on his regular salary, and thus screwed himself out of millions of dollars.
Donald Sutherland (best known currently as President Snow or as the father of Kiefer Sutherland), was prolific in his prime. Some of my favorites of his are Eye of the Needle, The Great Train Robbery, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and The Eagle Has Landed. He also pops up in the Kate Bush video, Cloudbursting. Sutherland is always fun to watch.

Donald Sutherland has done so many amazing roles as mentioned, as well as I think one in "Outbreak". I really hope that she sees both "Kelly's Heroes" as well as "M*A*S*H" as they are so amazing as well and they are both war-"comedies". Donald was also in "Animal House" and another warmovie of "The Eagle Has Landed", well worth a good watch and a good set of cast!

Lee Marvin is buried in Arlington Cemetery, he was a scout sniper in the Marines during WWII. I have visited his grave site in the past.

I was in the 80's, but back then they didnt have a sustained sniper program. During Vietnam they "reinvented the wheel" again, but after the war the Marines were the only service to set up a permanent dedicated MOS and training system at Quantico. I'm not sure what exactly "Scout Sniper" meant back then, but I think it was more what we could consider a designated marksman today.
Most of the cast was vets. Charles Bronson was a B-29 gunner, Ernest Borgnine was in the Navy, Jim Brown and George Kennedy were in the Army, Robert Webber and Richard Jaeckel were Marines

He's played so many great roles over the years, but seeing him so young in this I almost didn't recognize him.
Lee Marvin was a Marine during WW2. Got shot during the battle of Iwo Jima. True badass. See him in Cat Ballou (1965, western/musical) and The Professionals (1966). The Professionals is a western, and he plays with another true badass in Jack Palance. Before WW2, Palance was a professional boxer. As for Charles Bronson, you might watch him in Chato's Land, or definitely in the Death Wish series!!!! Another great review...

Jack Palance was often the bad guy in the movies he was in because of his rugged looks. They were the result of reconstructive surgery after his face got burned while exiting a burning B-24 bomber while in the Army Air Corps in WWII. It gave him a distinctive unmistakable look that worked especially well in the westerns he was in.
Just to make a couple corrections, Lee Marvin was shot on Saipan and never made it to Iwo Jima. The Iwo Jima part got started because Iwo Jima was part of the lie that went around the internet about the medic that treated Lee Marvin being Captain Kangaroo, Bob Keshan. Also, if you're speaking about the MP Guard Sergeant, that was Richard Jaeckel not Audie Murphy.
Bronson was in the USAAF in WW2 flew 25 missions and received a Purple Heart.

The amount of star power in this movie is massive. The list of notable actors is a long one. Some were stars already and some were future superstars. As a military vet myself, I love Bronson's line at the end of the movie. Another great WW2 movie is Kelly's Heroes. Lots of star power and hilarious.

My Dad took just himself and me out in San Fransisco and got to watch it in the theater right after it was released. I also took me to see "Bullitt" in the same theater with Steve McQueen . He, my Dad is 3rd gen San Fransiscan ( I'm 4rth gen) and with him growing up there He kept saying "you can't get there" from where ever as the Cars in the movie would turn one corner and show a different street next. We loved him for it.

Telly Savalas did do The Dirty Dozen, the deadly mission1987 and the fatal mission 1988, where he basically repeated his role from 1970 Kellys Heroes.
Ernest Borgnine, General Worden, was only actor that was in all Dirty Dozen movies Also starred with Lee Marvin in 1973, Emperor of the North Pole and 1985 The Dirty Dozen Next Mission, they appeared both in 1955 Violent Saturday and Bad Day at Black Rock, 1953 3D movie The Stranger Wore a Gun.
Ernest Borgnine is one of those who co starred with lot of top name actors during his 60 year career from Randolph Scott in 1950s to Bruce Willis in 2010.
One of Lee Marvin's best performances in my opinion is the film "Hell in the Pacific" which also starred a very famous Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune who was in The Seven Samurai. That's well worth a watch.

Interesting story. At 26, Clint secured an audition with Cecil B DeMille for The Ten Commandments. On the way there, Clint saw a woman standing on the roadside next to a car with a flat tire. Clint was running late, but he couldn't bear leaving her unassisted, so he helped her with her flat. The woman offered to pay him, but Clint declined. Clint told her he had to hurry because he missed his interview with Mr. DeMille.
Clint arrived at the studio and was told to wait. Hours later, Cecil B DeMille entered the room, angry, and demanded an explanation. Halfway through, Cecil interrupted Clint with a laugh, and said, "Young man, you can stop right there, because I know exactly what happened, but what you don't know is, the woman your helped is my secretary."
Clint got the part, and more work thereafter....
Kelly's Heroes is also a good warmovie with Clint Eastwood😊

Another great World War II movie starring Lee Marvin is the big red one. It came out in 1980 and it costars Mark Hamill. It’s a great movie to track down.
Big Red One is damn awesome. I run lots of RPG's of various genres, and Lee Marvin's character from Big Red One has been the inspiration of so many military NPC's from my games. Love that movie and may be my fave WWII movie. The intro from WWI was damn good too. Too few reactors ever give the Big Red One a chance.

7:12 You probably won't realise who this guy (Jim Brown) is. He's regarded as one of, if not the, greatest American Football players of all time. Sadly passed away in the Summer of 2023. Retired at his peak from playing to pursue an acting career, so when you see him near the end of the movie sprinting across that courtyard, he was only maybe 30 yrs old and still wicked fast. I guess most folks would know him from the comedy Mars Attacks! where he plays the casino employee Byron who has a fist fight with the aliens allowing Tom Jones & Annette Benning to escape in a small plane.
The armband colours seemed to confuse you a bit - green was neutral (umpires, observers, etc). The two sides were red against blue. Our heroes sneaked through by "cheating" by keeping changing their armband colours.
The fake General was Donald Sutherland, another amazing actor. He played in dozens of movies, but one of my favourites is a little known WWII/Spy film called The Eye Of The Needle, where he is a German spy who learns of the D-Day invasion plans and is desperately trying to get back to Berlin with the information. He ends up on a remote island in northern Scotland and the tension builds from there.
You may know of Donald Sutherland's famous actor son, Kiefer Sutherland. Among many other great roles, he was one of the vampires in The Lost Boys, as well as one of the bad kids in the teenage coming of age movie, Stand By Me.
He was also considered one of the brat pack of the 80s

A lee marvin movie that nobody talks about is Donnavon's Reef. It actually stars john wayne but lee marvin is hilarious in it.
Kelly's Hero's is another great war movie from that cinematic era.
The problem with letting him go is that they would all be sent back to prison for immediate execution of their sentence.
Lee Marvin was one of the greats, playing a baddie or one of the good guys, always a great professional actor. And an actual marine from the WWII Pacific. Telly Savalas (Maggot) is playing an unlikable psycho in this one but also a very great actor. Check him out in Kelly's Heroes playing a sympathetic sergeant along with Clint Eastwood...and Donald Donald Sutherland (the fake general) who steals the movie playing a hippy tank driver. You may know him in his very aged form from the Hunger games. M*A*S*H has him in top form. That castle was a set they constructed and then blew up for real with actual explosives. Jim Brown was in real danger in that scene dropping the explosives down the vents and they needed someone who could run fast. A former NFL football player did the job nicely. And you Dawn are just wonderful, glad you liked this one!

Co-starring Jane Fonda, in the title role, Marvin plays twin brothers, one good the other bad. _Cat Ballou_ will definitely get a Best Movie Ever!
Instead of watching _The Magnificent Seven_ again why not watch the film it was based on: Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, _Seven Samurai._ It's a much longer film, nearly four hours, which allows us not only to get to know the "Seven" better but also delves more fully into the personalities of the villagers and the life of the village.

Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, Clint Walker, Richard Jaeckel are all veterans, having served during or after the Second World War. Marvin and Bronson were wounded in the line of duy. And, in accordance to military regulations, you never salute without wearing a hat.
Saluting without headgear is just fine, there are many circumstances for that. The only time you should don headgear prior to saluting is for reveille and retreat and the national anthem if you're wearing a uniform that has headgear. The only exception I can think of is being on a flightline where headgear that cannot be fastened securely to the head should not be worn at all, but you would render salutes and honors as needed as long as safety is not jeopardized.

I highly recommend "The Devil's Brigade". It's a similar premise as "The Dirty Dozen" however it's based on real events.

This is a great film. Some other war films worth watching are Kelly's Heroes, The Longest Day, Went The Day Well & The Eagle Has Landed.
"Went the Day Well" is pretty obscure and I was fortunate to see it a few years ago. Great movie from, I believe, Ealing Studios.

Telly Savales (Maggot) had a degree in psychology and he used it to really portray Maggot. I met him ages ago and he was kind and willing to talk about his films and tv shows.

Clint Walker (Posy) was 6'6 and indeed was a gentle giant. One of the nicest men to ever lives and who always had time for his fans up until his death in his early 90s. He played the title character in the western series "Cheyenne".
Kelly's Heroes is one of my favorite WW2 movies along with this one. Love Donald Sotherland's characters in both of these movies, especially in Kelly's Heroes(Oddball)!! LOL
The balding blonde guy with the glasses at the beginning, then as the observer during the wargames, was George Kennedy, he was Frank's partner in The Naked Gun series.
Also Jim Brown is a Hall of Fame running back in the NFL, and lettered in 10 sports I think in college.

Jim Brown passed away 6 months ago. Three of the actors who played the 12 are still with us. Donald Sutherland (#2), Stuart Cooper (#5) and Colin Maitland (#7). Trini Lopez (#10) passed away in 2020 due to complications from COVID. Was very sad.

The right-hand man to Marvin's character, was Richard Jaeckal. As far as I know, he was always a supporting actor. I remember him best in this film and also in the John Wayne western, "Chisum".

I've watched the Dirty Dozen since I was a little tyke in the late 60s. First saw it on it's network TV premier in 1968 or 1969. I've seen it at least a dozen times since, never get tired of it.
Another great WW2 adventure movie is Where Eagles Dare with Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton.

I don't know if you knew this but the fake General is Kiefer Sutherlands dad. And to me both are amazing actors.
There was a thing fairly popular in this era to plant a singing star in the cast. He would perform a well-known song. It always comes off kind of cheesy. Triuni Lopez was that in this film. He was very famous, particularly for the song he does here.
Donald Sutherland was Hawkeye Pierce in the M.A.S.H. movie, which was a pretty faithful rendering of the book, unlike Alan Alda's weepy and pathologically obstructive character in the TV series. Give the film a try.
Telly Savalas had a very popular detective series, Kojak with a catch phrase, "Who loves ya, baby."
Lee Marvin was actually a US Marine who took part in 21 landings on Pacific Islands in 1944, before being badly wounded during the 5 week battle for the Island of Saipan. His wounds were so bad, he spent over a year in Military Hospitals before being honourably discharged ...
Ah, this is a great movie, I used to watch this and Where Eagles Dare a lot when I was a kid. Definitely worth checking out Where Eagles Dare if you've not seen it I reckon.

Some more movies with Charles Bronson are The Great Escape, Charo's Land, and the Death Wish series of which there were five movies. A good movie with Lee Marvin as a good guy is Paint Your Wagon, which also starred a young Clint Eastwood.

Another great James Stewart movie is The flight of the Phoenix's it also stars Richard Attenborough. It's about a plane crash and how they fix the plane to get out of the desert.

During the war game, The Dirty Dozen moved through a ‘live-fire range’ where real bullets were used. No one is supposed to go there for safety reasons. Changing arm bands to change sides was not allowed. The Dirty Dozen broke all the rules, like in a real war.
Maggot was played by the legendary Telly Savalas. He played Kojak, one of the best TV police crime drama when I was teenager. Jim Brown was a superstar football player. Trini Lopez was a famous singer. The gentle giant Clint Walker played a lot of lead roles in film and TV. The fake general is the great Donald Sutherland. I can almost guarantee you’ll be reacting to one of his movies soon.
I recommend ‘Kelly’s Heroes’ starring Clint Eastwood. Starring with him were Telly Savalas (Maggot) and Donald Sutherland (fake general). I guarantee you will LOVE them both in this film!
Lee Marvin played the same role in a sequel. Unfortunately there was always a ‘Maggot’ in the bunch.
The film ‘The Dirty Dozen’ has a special place in a lot young guys’ hearts. There was an homage to it in Tom Hank’s film ‘Sleepless in Seattle’. Tom Hanks and Victor Garber reminisce about ‘The Dirty Dozen’ and you get to see two grown men cry talking about the film. LOL.
Review Shaft, Castle Keep, Where Eagles Dare, and The Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood.) Also, think about doing Star Trek (1966 - 1969.)
Dawn Marie you are an absolute angel! This is one of those movies that you have somewhere to go and you're walking out of the house you see it on and just have to sit down and watch it some. Lee Marvin was a marine during WWII, he always laughed at this movie. He said all the actors were way too old to be soldiers! GREAT Movie! Thanks! Hope you enjoyed it!

Lee Marvin was a Marine in the Pacific during WWII, a combat marine who was wounded. He was a genuine war hero and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, where the US's heroes are buried.
Another great WW2 movie from the 60's is "Where Eagles Dare" starring Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton. Beautiful locations, real explosions, great stunts, clever writing, mystery, intrique, lots of action, and strong female operatives.
"Broad Sword calling Danny Boy" I Have to Agree "Where Eagles Dare" is a great watch , I would also surgest the war movie "Battle of The Bulge" 1965 with an all star cast including Charles Bronson & Telly Savalas
